Who knows about living on the District Line?

MovingonUptoLahndan · 26/04/2015 11:05

I've got a new job in Fulham, very close to the tube. I can't afford to live there unless I win the lottery so I'm looking at flats very close to the tube station all the way along the District Line.

I don't want to walk more than a few minutes as some of the areas aren't exactly crime free Grin and if I'm going to have 40-60 minutes on a tube I want to make it as easy as poss to get there.

We've got about 375-ish to spend and need 2 beds (don't need to think about schools or nurseries)

The first one I've picked is right next to Bromley by Bow tube

Bromley by Bow ~ 41 minutes tube

Look at Southfields. It's quite a trek from Bromley by Bow and if the District Line goes down you're stuck. You can walk to Earlsfield mainline from Southfields, too, straight into Waterloo - handy if you change jobs. Also look at place on the train line that runs through West Brompton (which is really Fulham) and Imperial Wharf.

MovingonUptoLahndan · 26/04/2015 11:10

this is my favourite next to Ravenscourt Park

What do you think?

MovingonUptoLahndan · 26/04/2015 11:11

I can't find any in Southfields or Wimbledon close enough to the tube.

Does the District Line go down Shock - shit, did not even consider that

I wouldn't bother with the Acton flat - you'll need to change at Earls Court, which in time will be soul destroying. Commuting isn't easy in London wherever you live, so you're dead right to try to keep it to one line. Shout if you need any info on Fulham and surrounding areas as I know it well.

MovingonUptoLahndan · 26/04/2015 11:13

I can't find anything in West Brompton or imperial wharf (which looks lovely)

It's a job for life civil service job, until I move out of London to retire in 10/15 years I will be staying there.

Is the change at Earls Court a bad one?

When I went to the interview I went in on the Northern Line and the actual changing lines was really easy. I know there are some which are dreadful and I want to avoid those ones.

Fulham looks fab Smile

Having said I know the area well, I'm not up to speed on Ravenscourt Park but it's central enough. That Flat seems to be over shops/cafe which could be an issue selling on. East Putney? Let me have quick look on RightMove. When are you planning to move? There's hints prices will fall - I'm in Kensington and things have defo eased up price wise here..

MovingonUptoLahndan · 26/04/2015 11:20

It is above shops. If I look all over London most of the 2 beds I can afford are above shops.

I quite like it but I appreciate they are harder to sell on. That may not be too much of a problem if I'm keeping it ten years.

And it seems better than the noise of actual tenants, unless I'm above a pub then shop staff go home at some point.

Moving by Christmas probably, putting house on market in summer.

Get your point on living over a business premises - far better than all-night parties. I've had a look on Rightmove and not much available as you say. At least you have time on your side to look. Do consider that overground line into West Brompton as it's an easy walk down North End Road to F' Broadway. It goes via Clapham Junction which opens up a whole new area. Good luck with the move - very exciting!

rubyflipper · 26/04/2015 11:26

Please avoid the 'far east' stations between Upton Park and Barking. It'll take you ages to get to work and the area isn't nice at all.

IrenetheQuaint · 26/04/2015 11:28

Bromley by Bow to Fulham is a bit of a trek, but you'll probably get a seat so if you're happy to sit and read it's not too bad. West would be a lot quicker, though, if you can afford it.

The District line can be unreliable and often has short delays (which feel like ages at the time) when joining the Circle line so always allow longer than the official journey time.

MovingonUptoLahndan · 26/04/2015 11:28

You're right, there's one close to Clapham Junction which is nice

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-49141858.html

A bit further than the station, I walked it on Street view and it's about ten minutes

I would try to stay west or south of Fulham, the district line is old and slow. I don't find changing at earls court a problem as the Piccadilly line from acton is quick and you don't join district until earls court. If you timed it right it would be about 30 mins. What about places you can get a bus to Fulham? Or the train to putney and walk/bus.

wickedwaterwitch · 26/04/2015 11:53

What about this?

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-51255281.html

Bus or walk along North End Rd

wickedwaterwitch · 26/04/2015 11:59

I'd find somewhere as near as you can to work, it'll make a huge difference to your life. When I lived in London I was either walking distance from work or 2 stops, no more, on the tube. Long commutes are awful in London (or anywhere I suppose)

MovingonUptoLahndan · 26/04/2015 12:03

I can rent somewhere round the corner from work for about 1600/1700 a month and the properties are much nicer than I can afford to buy.

I guess I could keep my house outside London and get lodgers in to some of the rooms - lodgers rather than rent the whole house though.

I'm not keen on a lot of the ex local
authority blocks, some have been modernised but the ones that haven't look very tired and I'm a bit worried about 'real' value. They've gone up vastly out of proportion to what they were ten years ago whereas conversions seem to have always been worth more

Southfields has some flats in your price range.

whatsagoodusername · 26/04/2015 12:06

I used to live in Southfields - it was nice and Earlsfield as mentioned above was very useful for getting into town.

I found changing at Earls Court really easy.

MovingonUptoLahndan · 26/04/2015 12:07

I couldn't find any close enough to the tube apart from that one Zinxie and that ones sold.

There's so little on the market....

OP posts:
wickedwaterwitch · 26/04/2015 12:07

Yes, renting might be good if the maths work out.
