Who knows about living on the District Line?

I've got a new job in Fulham, very close to the tube. I can't afford to live there unless I win the lottery so I'm looking at flats very close to the tube station all the way along the District Line.

I don't want to walk more than a few minutes as some of the areas aren't exactly crime free Grin and if I'm going to have 40-60 minutes on a tube I want to make it as easy as poss to get there.

We've got about 375-ish to spend and need 2 beds (don't need to think about schools or nurseries)

The first one I've picked is right next to Bromley by Bow tube

Bromley by Bow ~ 41 minutes tube

That one you linked to Wicked is a horrible block but is the only one on a very nice street. Which makes it better?

Just totally shocked at 400 k to live in a block like that

Yes, it's true changing at Earl's Court is very easy.

If you like Southfields, go and register in person so you get early heads up.

It's a nice place to live and a good investment, and a very very easy trip to Fulham for you.

MovingonUptoLahndan · 26/04/2015 12:11

I like the Wimbledon one above the shops.

London prices are bonkers, I agree. But if you're definitely staying ten years it probably is worth buying.

wickedwaterwitch · 26/04/2015 12:16

Maybe rent until you're sure about your job? And then you can scope out areas more easily. Some parts of Fulham are cheaper than others, when they're further from the tube.

Gozogozo · 26/04/2015 12:17

In relation to earlier comments about Earlsfield, it's an area 'on the up' both housing & shopping areas, so definitely worth considering as should be easy to sell on in ten years or so.

MovingonUptoLahndan · 26/04/2015 12:22

I can't see the journey from 'Earlsfield' at all Confused

The closes station for district is Wimbledon Park and there's nothing I can afford there.

Earlsfield looks like a half hour from Wimbledon Park?

Half hour walk?

MovingonUptoLahndan · 26/04/2015 12:24

Ah wait, you mean two tube changes?

On at Earlsfield, change at Clapham Junction the Clapham Junction to West Brompton then change again for Fulham?

The Wimbledon one is nice, I agree.

Have you been for a wander around Wimbledon and Southfields?
Register with EA's, get a feel for the place?

Tollygunge · 26/04/2015 12:56

I loved Bow and really miss the area. I hated the district line though, but only because it doesn't work as well as central. I used to just walk to Mile end.

Zinxie · 26/04/2015 13:01

District line between Wimbledon and Fulham is very good. Nice because it's overground a lot. Frequent and reliable. There are a mixture of old and new trains on the line, the old ones being phased out. The new ones very nice.

Personally I think being able to travel overground on the London tube is a great benefit.

whatsagoodusername · 26/04/2015 13:10

Earlsfield is good for going into Central London from Southfields - wouldn't be useful for getting to Fulham.

I lived on Engadine Street near the park and was about 10-15 minute walk to Earlsfield and about 8 minutes to Southfields station - about 10 to Wimbledon Park station.

MrsBertMacklin · 26/04/2015 13:28

Have you looked at roads south of Battersea Park / border of Queenstown and Latchmere Road?

30 minute walk, some nice pubs and shops. Transport connections aren't on your doorstep, but a lot easier to get to central London etc that you would think at first glance.

PennilynLott · 26/04/2015 13:36

Please don't live in Bromley by bow. I am sure the flyover isn't the cultural hub or anything but it's so horrible.

Themoleandcrew · 26/04/2015 13:37

The district line is in the middle of a massive upgrade. The Wimbledon branch gets trains from both the city and Edgware road and has the most frequent service. If you are planning to stay there for a few years you could suffer a longer commute in the short term as once the upgrade is complete the journey times will be reduced due to automatic running (due in 2020 atm, it was originally supposed to be 2018). I'm at the other end of the line from where you want to be but have suffered a 1 1/2 hour commute for years.
I would avoid bow. It's a bit of a dump, imo.

MovingonUptoLahndan · 26/04/2015 13:37

That's quite a long walk to get mugged in Grin

There's a few 2 beds in ex local
Authority blocks on York road close to the bridge.

How safe would you say the area is?

OP posts:
Swishyswashy · 26/04/2015 13:44

All the areas from Earl's Court to Wimbledon are very safe so you could live 10/ 15 minutes walk from the tube and get to work much quicker than if you lived close to tube at other end of line. Wimbledon, Southfields, East Putney, West Brompton and Fulham all very nice (but expensive) areas. Living in a cheaper block in these areas would be very safe.

MovingonUptoLahndan · 26/04/2015 13:49

I don't want to be walking about in the dark at all. My balance isn't great and I need to be very smart for work so arriving damp and windswept not an option. So 2/3 minutes from a tube is best for me, I'm not young enough or fit enough for yomping about.

FrameyMcFrame · 26/04/2015 18:59

Second Southfields, when I lived there I had a 20 min walk to the tube/train station but it's nice area to walk in, there's a lovely park. You could bike it each day anyway...

MovingonUptoLahndan · 26/04/2015 19:00

Bike it Shock

Really not with all the scary traffic. Haven't ridden a bike for over 40 years Grin

Have a look between East Putney and Wandsworth Town. Also up Fulham Palace Road towards Hammersmith or off the top of North End Road. Lillie Road is also cheaper.
Walking from home to Fulham B would be fine from all those. Or bus or tube.

FreeButtonBee · 26/04/2015 19:27

Don't forget buses! London buses are great. And you can walk a bit and then jump on further down the road

Celeriacacaca · 26/04/2015 20:42

There's a new development being built right now directly opposite Southfields tube station. Agent is KFH. Might be worth having a look to buy off plan?
