White floor in a kitchen - tell me it's madness

BovrilonToast · 01/04/2015 18:41

The house we are buying has a large kitchen diner 7m x 4m.

It's quite dark though as it goes back quite deeply in to the house iyswim...

So, I've seen lots of lovely kitchens online with white floors. I love them.

Talk me out of this please. Clearly a white floor is ridiculous.

It's madness, I tell you, madness! For the love of GOD woman get a grip! [channels Phoebe from friends]

Likeaninjanow · 01/04/2015 18:44

I have one, well a cream one anyway. The tiles aren't too bad, but the grout is an utter bastard to clean. Hth!

Bonsoir · 01/04/2015 18:44

I have a white tiled kitchen floor.

It requires regular washing with a mild bleach cleaner (eg Cillit Bang floor cleaner) to keep it bright white and gleaming.

AndWhenYouGetThere · 01/04/2015 18:45

White grout is a pain. Statement grout on white tiles can be pretty though.

Thisissomething · 01/04/2015 18:48

I had a cream one and it was truly horrendous! The grouting was horrible and just a tiny drop of liquid meant footprints all over. It really was the bane of of my life. Changed it a year ago and still remember the awfullness of it.

Saying that my friend has a cream floor which is lovely and never shows dirt but the difference is hers has lots of flecks in it.

JuliaDream · 01/04/2015 18:53

We had a white kitchen floor when we moved into our house. I lived with it for 2 long years. I hated it.

We now have black tiles Grin

BovrilonToast · 01/04/2015 18:55

What about white engineered wood - is there such thing?!

I'm quite a clean person - but two cats and DSSs would destroy the beautiful whiteness in seconds... I know this is madness.

Any other suggestions to add some light?

We have cream shiny tiles with medium grey grout. Still have the bright look but no problem with grout being dirty. Works for us

Lweji · 01/04/2015 19:00

You could get something in tones of white, but with patterns. The dirt is less obvious. But, still...

Magmatic80 · 01/04/2015 19:06

I've got cream tiles with black grubby grouting. I like it, it reflects the light. We'll be having it in new teeny kitchen too as part of desperate attempt to make it feel bigger.

wowfudge · 01/04/2015 19:18

White or black are both madness imo. Once lived in a rented house with a checkerboard kitchen floor. That was the work of the devil.

CarbeDiem · 01/04/2015 19:31

If you don't mind every God damn speck of EVERYTHING being glaringly obvious then you're not mad.
I have white tiles and really wish I didn't.
On the only plus side it does lighten up the room :)

Limer · 01/04/2015 19:37

One of my friends once bought a house with a white tiled kitchen floor. She knew it was madness, and sighed in a housewifely way, "oh well, at least it'll make me clean it more often". I was appalled.

I have dark green/grey flecky-patterned lino in my kitchen. I have cats, I have teenagers. No dirt shows, I clean it once a month. I am never changing it, apart from for another identical pattern if it ever wears out.

Mominatrix · 01/04/2015 19:54

I have white tiles in my kitchen. Not really a problem to maintain:

  • no shoes in the house
  • hoovered every day
  • mopped 3 times a week with a mild bleach solution

Sounds a faff, but really not much of a bother.

BovrilonToast · 01/04/2015 20:11

Oooo I could get a roomba thing for the kitchen. I know the cats would like that...

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 01/04/2015 20:18

What about white looks-like-wooden-floorboards (I am sure that's a brand name!) Lino? You'll have a bit of a dirt hiding pattern going on, no grout and it is warm and slightly soft underfoot.

BovrilonToast · 01/04/2015 21:00

Good idea Pippi - I shall investigate

We have white wooden-floorboard style laminate in our current (rented) kitchen. The grain is done in a greyish colour so the overall effect isn't too stark. Probably not what I'd choose but better than it sounds!

Pradaqueen · 02/04/2015 11:22

I have shiny white porcelain tiles throughout downstairs with white grout and have 4 kids. Although it sounds madness it is really easy to keep clean. I have a really good steam mop and use a product called 'white rocks' that I bought from an interior design show two years back (it lasts for ages) I also got the tiler to seal the grout first and we have a shoes off policy at home. Looks lovely and if I'm honest has made us less blasé about treading dirt in! If you want it, go for it I say!

bilbodog · 02/04/2015 13:56

sheer madness........................

MrsJamin · 02/04/2015 18:13

Hoovering your kitchen every day is madness personified. I'm getting flecky-grey tiles and choosing to have a life instead.

ShatterResistant · 02/04/2015 18:16

We have cream look-like-wood tiles. I love them so much. It does get dirty, but is also super easy to clean, and looks amazing.

MerryMarigold · 02/04/2015 18:42

I've got light tiles with brown bits/ flecks in them and dark brown grout between. Gloss white cabinets to bounce light and some metallic cabinets which also bounce light. It's a very light room anyway, but I love light!

There's things to be done, but definitely not a white shiny floor unless you are the kind of person who mops twice a day. Tbh I wouldn't get a gloss floor in any colour. I'd go light and flecky!

Florin · 02/04/2015 20:46

We have a white upstairs bathroom floor with a no shoes ban in the house. I f*ing hate it to put it mildly. It looks dirty permanently even though I clean it several times a week and before anyone visits. Particularly in the summer it is awful. I can't wait to move!

MrsNuckyThompson · 02/04/2015 20:49

We have a white kitchen floor and it mings. Don't do it.
