if you have grey wall in rooms, how does it look at night? bright enough or not?

While looking for property to buy, I saw some houses with grey pain on walls and they looked nice in daylight. I am thinking of painting similar colour in our new house but i am not sure how it will look at night.

Current rented apartment has cream walls and they look cosy and nice at night with bulbs/lamps but i am a bit bored of cream/magnolia colour. Do you have any pictures or feedback about how the grey walls compare at night light. I have realized that I spend maximum time at home when it is morning, evening and night and not bright day.

I loooooove our grey bedroom :) Did the 2 smaller walls in a darker grey shade, and the 2 larger walls in a lighter shade. It looks cosy and luxurious at night. But then I don't really want it bright at night. I want it cosy and luxurious :)

suzyrut · 11/03/2015 11:00

I have F&B downpipe in my bedroom and at night it looks black though I should probably state that I am a big fan of dark walls and have actual black walls in my living room and it's lovely and cosy at night. I have a couple table lamps dotted around and a floor lamp and they make lovely pools of light on the walls.

RainbowInACloud · 11/03/2015 11:02

We hated it and repainted. It looked quite classy but was so cold- seemed to sap the colour from the room. This could have been the shade though rather than all greys.

mum2015 · 11/03/2015 11:41

BreeVDKamp, suzyrut and RainbowInACloud,

Which grey colours you have so i can look online that shade and get an idea.

The place I am buying is freshly painted in cream by current owner and DH isnt willing to get it repainted. I really need to convince him and also find a right shade of grey.

Rooms are small, two of them north facing, one is west facing and one south facing. We are buying a house slightly above the budget we planned for so I can only get IKEA furniture. That is another reason why I am thinking of grey paint as basic white furniture looked nice with grey walls.

Can't remember the exact shade but it was a fairly pale grey in a north facing room so a poor combination I guess. Sure yours will look much better.

mum2015 · 11/03/2015 14:23

So should a north facing room have pale grey or dark grey?

We loved our grey lounge. Took about 4 paint samples to get the right shade. went for a soft Dulux oneone. Lookee beautiful at night. Every time i tried a darker tint it didn't work for me.

mum2015 · 11/03/2015 14:46

SueChef,

Which Soft Dulux you have?

BreeVDKamp · 11/03/2015 14:59

Had a look on the Dulux website - one of ours was Chic Shadow, I think the light one. As for the darker one...? Both Warm Pewter and Urban Obsession ring a bell. I think the latter.

SueChef · 11/03/2015 16:27

I'm sorry we since moved and left the tin behind. Not a clue what it was and I've just spent ages having a gogle. Nothing is ringing a bell

mum2015 · 11/03/2015 16:35

SueChef,

was it egyptian cotton, heron or dusted moss by any chance. looking at old threads these are the ones seemed to be mentioned a lot for dulux grey.

BreeVDKamp thanks for name. I will look for its sample.

We have just done 2 walls of our reasonably dark lounge in Chic Shadow and it's gorgeous - just the exact shade of dove grey.

At night it looks darker but not cold and by no means makes the room look darker than it did before when it was in Timeless. In fact it has really lifted the room IMO.

I read every grey thread on here, scoured Pinterest and tried millions of samples and Chic Shadow was the perfect shade in terms of soft light grey with no undertones.

Dangermouse1 · 11/03/2015 16:53

Really recommend farrow and ball Cornforth white (it is grey despite the name!)

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 11/03/2015 16:55

My North facing living room is Dove Tale by farrow and ball. It's a pale-mid, warm toned, more lilac-y grey shade and looks lovely in all lights - even harsh, cold winter sun and especially nice in lamp light.

I didnt like egyptian cotton, I found it more browny-beige than grey. I'm not keen on brown based greys.

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 11/03/2015 16:56

Cornforth White is very pale, a hint of a tint of grey. Nice though

Georgethesecond · 11/03/2015 16:57

I don't think Egyptian Cotton is grey at all. We have it and it is beige, I would say.

ShutUpLegs · 11/03/2015 17:04

We have two walls in the bedroom that are Dusted Moss in the darkest shade, then one wall plus ceiling and all paintwork in the second palest. The fourth wall is yellow. Its lovely - at night its rich and warm.

The soft furnishings are mainly cream, yellow and purple - crocus colours against the grey.

Personally, if it is north facing, I'd go darker to get the richness. A very pale grey may look colder. You'll need to swatch it and see it in all lights.

SpecificOcean · 12/03/2015 09:10

The kids tv room has one grey wall, the others are cream. It looks nice day or night. It would look too dark all over imo. It was Crown city break. End of third row;

mum2015 · 12/03/2015 14:55

Thanks all for your msgs. Crocus colours against the grey sounds lovely combination. I tried to put idea of painting grey on walls to DH and he thinks it may look dim and dark at night.

Anyone got any photos or any pictures on internet of grey rooms at night?

SueChef · 12/03/2015 16:26

I've just tried to find a picture to show the grey, uploading it now. I'll have a look through my emails later see if i jotted the name down anywhere.

My living room is Dimpse by F&B. It's a cool grey, and I have a white fire surround and white furniture. The sofa is a grey Orson from Made.com and the carpet is grey. I like grey Grin

It's surprisingly cosy and soft at night and as with most F&B paints.

dynevoran · 12/03/2015 18:31

I have Egyptian cotton in my living room and it definitely isn't grey but its my favourite colour in the whole house. It's such a cosy colour and looks amazing with a mossy green sofa and white woodwork. So nice in day and night and warm.

I have one room chic shadow which I like but is an office so is crisp more than coSY. My hallway stairs and landing is all a grey called potter's clay 2 which I really want to change because it's has too much of a lilac undertone.

I think that's the problem with trying to find too warm a grey that it can end up being a bit lilac so it's better to go for the crispness of a proper grey. I'll try to find and post some pics.

SueChef · 12/03/2015 19:01

I think they've changed the colours since I painted, nothing sounds familiar and I can't find it by sight either.

Buy a roll of lining paper and get some paint samples, make sure you get one that's a bit darker than you were thinking and one that's a bit lighter so you get a good comparison. Avoid anything really "steel"y - they looked very cold. Something with a very feint lavender hue would look warm.

It really did look soft and cosy at night.

mum2015 · 13/03/2015 10:31

thanks a lot for all your inputs. If all goes well I would be getting the house in 3 weeks time. I have noted down all colours and will get tester pots to try them.

I am thinking of getting white furniture but the floor at the moment is beige carpet. Would grey look ok with that carpet? DH thinks grey goes well with wooden floor and might look odd with beige carpet.
