Setting the table for estate agent's photos

Is it just me or is this really naff and off-putting?

There are a lot of good things about this house but I don't think I could bring myself to view it because of the staged table settings in the kitchen and roof terrace. Maybe the agents cajoled them in to it.

I like the way the bananas migrate along the counter. Always important to have your bananas centre stage

TranquilityofSolitude · 09/03/2015 12:27

Never mind the table - what about the picture of the shoes?!

thatsmadted · 09/03/2015 12:28

Yes, it seems random that they used a bunch of bananas to try to soften the clinical minimalism.

Estate agents love a bit of bling and I guess they couldn't resist the row of shoes.

We're getting our house ready for sale and I don't think I need worry about the estate agent taking pictures of my motley collection of Birkestocks and worn-out trainers shoes.

Oh, it looks lovely, but there's no garden! And it's all overlooked! Don't like that. The kitchen is too clinical for me too. When I see a table staged like that, I have to resist shouting, 'Oh, that's what the table's for! Thank you so much!'

LOL at the shoes too.

LoofahVanDross · 09/03/2015 12:35

Very overlooked. The kitchen leads out to a garden and the rear looks like the neighbour could reach over and nick the croissants from the table.

thatsmadted · 09/03/2015 12:37

CocktailQueen, I agree but sadly it's all a bit overlooked and garden-less in this neck of the woods unless you have a huge budget. This is really close to Hove Station so the price is inflated by the London commuters.

Useful if trying to sell a 'little to do but move in' type home, otherwise looks a bit silly.

RaphaellaTheSpanishWaterDog · 09/03/2015 12:41

It wouldn't put me off viewing although it is unnecessary imho, but I have seen far worse - at least it's just an informal breakfast type set-up as opposed to a table set for a formal dinner party, that just looks daft!

I'm not overly keen on that type of clinical kitchen personally, but overall I thought the house was well presented. The one thing that would prevent me viewing is just how overlooked the rear 'garden' is.

wowfudge · 09/03/2015 13:06

I don't mind the table setting tbh. I do think the row of shoes looks a mess and just makes me think the Imelda Marcos of the house needs to put her bloody shoes away.

The whole place is a bit clinical and staged for my taste and lacks warmth - it isn't homely - and the back yard is very overlooked. Hate the shutters.

Cacofonix · 09/03/2015 13:14

Yes the bananas are very funny - perhaps they should have found their way into other photos for a game of hide and seek. I am with you OP. There is no need to dress a table other than with flowers or bowl. Looks like you are trying too hard otherwise. When I have viewed a house that has the dining table permanently set for a dinner party for 12, I just imagine all the dust it must collect. Don't be cajoled into it!

FoxyVeganJane · 09/03/2015 13:19

Wow,I'm sorry price made my jaw drop. You could buy a Manor House for that round here.

Everything's ok apart from the row of shoes I mean wtf. Otherwise they're doing that creating a lifestyle thing. This is how your life would be if you lived here.

All fine. View if you like it.

ClassicTron · 09/03/2015 13:44

What are the shoes about - just tells me there's not enough storage!

Although my hall is a bit like that with a million shoes left where they landed despite only 4 resident.

The flowers move too.

I quite like the house, although it costs 3 times as much as my similar sized detached house with a big garden - the garden was the reason we bought the house but it's over-rated. DC never really used it, I've never had much success with the veg I planned. A roof terrace would do me just nicely.

They really are selling the lifestyle. It's breakfast time in the kitchen and they're opening the wine on the roof terrace!

RugBugs · 09/03/2015 13:53

I used to live on that road as a young child. Fuck me I didn't realise how much property prices had gone up down there. My parents paid £11k for their first flat up the hill from Brighton station, wonder how much that is worth now.

Agrestic · 09/03/2015 14:05

The beds really annoying me, why didn't they bother straitening it up!?

HeyDuggee · 09/03/2015 14:12

You're not buying it furnished, and most people try to picture their own belongings when viewing a property, so I find it bizarre you'd reject a viewing because someone dressed a table for an estate picture.

As an aside, one of the best property threads I read on here was Sweden's estate agents - they completely stage every property - it's brilliant viewing.

Poledra · 09/03/2015 14:18

It'd be funnier if the home-owners had subverted the estate agent's attempts and put the Sun rather than the Times on the kitchen table...

Vinomum · 09/03/2015 16:12

I think that house is absolutely gorgeous and exactly how I dream my house might look one day. Except the kitchen which looks like the inside of a spaceship. And the garden is such a disappointment. Wtf with the shoes?? I don't get this wanky stuff estate agents seem to be coming up with at the moment - a close-up of a bunch of flowers or some perfectly ruched curtains. All those things will be gone if I buy the house, I want to see the size of the rooms and the layout. Actually this makes me so ragey I would probably feed back to the estate agent about it, this level of nonsense should be stopped.

insertinterestingusernamehere · 09/03/2015 16:18

We are selling our house and I'm only managing to get the photos done bit by bit by moving the mess from one room to another, having seen this maybe I should try harder? No flowers or lines of shoes here.

traviata · 09/03/2015 16:19

i think the table setting in the kitchen is necessary to bring in some colour and texture, otherwise it would look like a mortuary slab.

TranmereRover · 09/03/2015 16:33

that's a lovely house but the moving vase of lillies and bananas are hilarious.
The shoes tell me that this is a house for PROFESSIONALS because who needs three pairs of nude courts and six pairs of black work shoes other than a very busy professional and if you buy this house you will be JUST LIKE THEM. (wardrobeless)

wowfudge · 09/03/2015 16:47

I looked at the details for a new build in Wantage the other day - should post a link. The photos just irritated the hell out of me and they'd showed you nothing.

wowfudge · 09/03/2015 16:52

this

What's with the stupid jaunty angles?

ClassicTron · 09/03/2015 16:56

I reckon that was the only way the camera would fit in the rooms wowfudge

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/03/2015 17:00

I love it. The pale blue splashback is how I want my kitchen.

Their just trying to sell the house as quickly as possible.
