I'm moving next year but since some horrible crime has been committed on the road I was planning to move to so Im re-evaluating. Possibly an overreaction but this is Property and not AIBU Grin

So that list is where we've considered and is now back up for discussion.

Help please. Jobs will be fine, there's always plenty of jobs in our sector (schools)

Eltham is london? London is getting to be GINORMOUS, then.

Stroud is depressing, imo.

SunnyBaudelaire · 03/03/2015 11:11

well I suppose it does have a London postcode.
Just the people I met from there were so v provincial made me think it must be in Kent.....

educatingarti · 03/03/2015 12:33

How often have you been to Stroud, Zinxie?

Zinxie · 03/03/2015 12:36

My mother lives there, educating. So a fair few times.

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-32416974.html is tiny, no room for anything and only a tiny shower room.

I've lived in Cambridge and now am in Bath. I love it here - everything you need for happy family living, and countryside and Bristol on our doorstep.

If you don't fancy the prices/traffic, though, I'd definitely consider nearby Frome - lots of independent shops, a little theatre, nice surrounding villages.

Undecidedhousemove · 03/03/2015 13:05

They are all such different options!
Capital, seaside city, countryside city, countryside... Well, which? Personally wouldn't consider Brighton - touristy, hectic, quite seedy, have no ties to Cambridge but is is a FAB city! Greenwich gorgeous but not for me as a family.
Cotswolds?? Wouldnt depend on "only an hour to London". At all. Unless at 4am! Maybe if near s station and not too touristy. Bath lovely despite tourists! In another life, would have gone there instead of where we are. Ticks so many boxes- compact city, good trains, good schools, lovely countryside, good arts scene.

Agree Maze Hill great location but omg to prices! I know that street (it's nice) but in my days less than that got you the entire house Shock

I am very shocked by all the rude comments about Cambridge! I moved here from London 7 years ago and love it!

If you like the more alternative scene Mill Road area in town is brilliant and town within walking distance with great shops, pubs, museums and tons going on.

If you prefer the countryside there are some lovely villages and beautiful countryside, especially in South Cambridgeshire. I love the endless skies and the (mostly) good weather.

Jubilee line is one of the latest running tube lines though I'm not sure it will get you to 2am except on weekends from September. A taxi to Greenwich from the West End will definitely cost you £40 or more.

There are some v nice flats within your budget on Greenwich peninsula but you are more isolated from Greenwich/Blackheath proper. Transport links are good, there's the Thames Clipper, the Jubilee line and the DLR if you hop over one stop to Canary Wharf or take the Emirates Cable car thingy.

Getting on or off the peninsula by car can be a nightmare though due to the Blackwall Tunnel and events at the O2. When it's bad it's horrid. Plenty of infrastructure too with shops/pharmacies/GP surgery and lots of restaurants at the O2. The Pilot Inn is fab too. It's worth having a wander around to get a feel for the place as it may tick a lot of boxes and you will get a lot more bang for your buck in terms of space in the older flats built in the early 2000's.

Caledonian Road is a pretty good location in a lot of ways and while obviously has been as rough as houses in the past [and quite recent past by the sound of it] sometimes London is just a damn violent place. Incidents are quite rare for the most part though. Unless there are very regular serious crimes in the area, I'm not sure I'd pull out of a sale.

In my neck of the woods - a legal secretary was murdered while standing at a bus stop in broad daylight about 3 yrs ago. She was on her way to work in Blackheath from a mile or two away. Patient on day release/escaped, I can't recall exactly but stabbed a number of people that morning.
There's the man who was beaten to a pulp in his own home in Wandsworth a month or two ago
Two streets away in a very naice rented house, a 19 yr old had his head blown off in a drunken/drugs related game of Russian roulette by all accounts about 5 yrs ago. It was a bit of a shock to have two PC's on the doorstep asking if we'd heard anything. Never heard of anything like that in the area since.

Crime is pretty much everywhere in London really if you look hard enough.

educatingarti · 03/03/2015 13:20

Zinxie - so does mine! I grew up there so maybe have an affection for the place because of that!

Lilymaid · 03/03/2015 13:37

Another person bemused about the rude comments on Cambridge. Its a great place to live (except for getting stuck in traffic) with loads going on. And it isn't windy - it is one of the least windy areas of the UK (and one of the driest).

GooseyLoosey · 03/03/2015 13:52

Used to live in Greenwich now I live in a village outside Bath with dcs at school in Bath.

Love, love, love Bath. Never tire of it. For me, it is just the right size city. Pretty to look at, a reasonable amount to do and can walk around it in an hour. The dcs love it to and have friends that live all around Bath. Not great public transport but lovely feeling place.

Amethyst24 · 03/03/2015 13:53

Treadsoftly, we regularly get Uber cabs home from central London to Greenwich for about £20.

HappyRacer · 03/03/2015 21:02

I stand by all I said about Cambridge. I lived there for years. It's hell. It's dirty, overcrowded and unpleasant. Not South Cambs, which is nice on the whole and in some parts lovely, but the city itself.

Frome near Bath, as mentioned above, is a super suggestion. It's a lovely former market town with history. Google 'Cheap Street' and see what I mean.

pootlebug · 04/03/2015 13:18

I was going to suggest Shooters Hill but see I've been beaten to it!

From September the tube will run all night to North Greenwich. Cab from there shouldn't be too pricey once in a while (and various buses run from there all night too, I think).

You get a lot for your money in Shooters Hill because of lack of trains, and no possibility of there ever being one due to how high it is on the hill. If you don't mind the walk back up, you can walk to Woolwich stations from parts of Shooters Hill though, and Woolwich is pretty well-connected and will get better with Crossrail.

If you're interested in Greenwich-ish I'd also look at Charlton and Westcombe Park. Pricier than Shooters Hill but better transport connections.
