Where would you live (and why) out of Greenwich/Cambridge/Cotswold town/Brighton/Bath

I'm moving next year but since some horrible crime has been committed on the road I was planning to move to so Im re-evaluating. Possibly an overreaction but this is Property and not AIBU Grin

So that list is where we've considered and is now back up for discussion.

Help please. Jobs will be fine, there's always plenty of jobs in our sector (schools)

Bloody hell, that description of the traffic Shock

There's no way we're getting buses and I'm not bloody driving with that description.

But it sounds a very nice place Smile to actually live

Where's the shoppy bit of that area? Is there one? I'm wandering round on Rightmove and can't see it Confused

Really annoyingly there's a post 16 fe college there - Dh works in one of those so it would be totally perfect for him

That's the a20 and more applicable to westcombe park. but if you don't do buses then it's maybe not for you!

Am curious as to why you've suggested Greenwich as your only London possibility Laurie?

Report
LaurieFairyCake · 02/03/2015 23:25

Yeah but Dh could walk to the fe college

Damnit, it looks nice on streetview

Shopping- so you have Greenwich retail park or town centre, eltham (10 mins - standard high st), or 20 mins drive to Bluewater.

Mintyy - keep getting priced out of the areas I like. Westminster/kennington/elephant and castle - just keep watching them rise and rise. And I really want a 2 bed. I was looking at one beds before.

It's very very nice. Honestly. I love it. Good schools and it's a lovely area. We go out in blackheath or Greenwich- although woolwich is on the doorstep for the dlr and train (and crossrail very soon) it's only useful for transport, and giant Tesco Smile

Bluewater in Kent - big shopping centre next to the Dartford Tunnel?

Would never have thought it was that close to drive - just Wow.

Yes, we go loads-its honestly that close. Very useful.

Slightly strange question then - if you got a taxi from central london to shooters hill

  • how much would it cost roughly?

I wish I could say but I'd rather walk on my bloody stumps than taxi home. I'd get train to blackheath and taxi from there if forced.

I work very centrally and it takes just over an hour to get in via north Greenwich tube, if that helps.

LaurieFairyCake · 02/03/2015 23:43

I was asking for after the tubes/trains finish really (might end up doing a late shift that finishes at 2am)

Wouldn't want to pay otherwise Grin - also tight like you

Oh I see! I still don't know, sorry. £40?

I won't mention the night 89 then eh?

Grin

Night buses sound terrifying. I've been on one once when the tubes shut down. 2 hours to get from the Strand to Brent Cross. Never again.

I'm old and I live in Brighton quite happily. It's lefty and arty and not all about the yoof! I moved here from South London 15 years ago and never regretted it (except when I see what my old house would be worth now).

Jynxed is spot on - you really don't have to be young and trendy to live in or near Brighton they'd have evicted me by now otherwise! Grin

I've lived in Cambridge and Brighton and have to say I enjoy Brighton a lot more. Cambridge is a much smaller city so less going on culturally or shops/restaurants wise. It is quite distorted by the university, the mass of students and the tourists. But most importantly the surrounding countryside is incredibly dreary. We ended up driving into Suffolk at the weekend just to take a nice walk.
Brighton on the other hand has stunning scenery around it. Yes, it's quirky but as ex-Londoners I think you probably need a bit of that. It is also marginally more ethnically diverse. You'll need to do a lot of research to find an area that suits you because they are very distinct. Do also look at hove if things like a garden matter to you.

Eltham is quite nice, I think. The high street is due to have quite a bit of regeneration in the next few years and is already pretty good for local shopping.

Good trains to London Bridge, Charing Cross, Cannon Street, and Victoria. Buses to O2 and Maritime Greenwich.

The bit between the high street and Shooters Hill is quite pretty, Oxleas Woods are lovely and Tudor Barn is a great bar/ restaurant.

But you could get www.andrewsonline.co.uk/sale/details/111310/st-peters-row-spring-lane-thrupp-stroud-gloucestershire type of thing for similar/less money in Stroud. Not everyone in Stroud is outdoorsy! Loads of other things to do, especially if you like arts of different types. Great town shopping - quirky shops as well as high street staples. Town has a real buzz about it - visit on a Saturday and see!

If living in 'London' would mean you were right out in Eltham, which is not really London anyway, you might as well live in Brighton or Cambridge or indeed the Cotswolds as you would get to central London just as quickly if you wanted to.

SwedeDreams · 03/03/2015 10:40

Eltham is not London? Who knew! However I agree, if you think zone 4 is too far out then it won't feel like London. And Brighton is very nice- Cotswolds to London in an hour though? Really? might do a day trip!

well it is all subjective you are right. For me, I would rather live in Brighton than somewhere like Eltham.
Yes I could get from Cirencester to London in just over an hour. Not that Ciren really appeals tbh.

Also it depends where you are working in London. Getting in is one thing, but getting across London during rush hour can add quite a bit on. Think looking at train routes and where you'll come into London is essential.

For your money - East Greenwich will give you better value unless you want to live in one of the very large new developments near the river. The main road isn't particularly inspiring but there is massive regeneration in the area at the moment so I'd expect coffee shops etc to start to open soon.

Quiet street - very close to Maze Hill station, less than 10 mins walk to central Greenwich. There's a decent sized Co-op at the end of the street.

This is a lovely little development finished about 5 yrs ago, really peaceful 5 mins from a little park and 15 mins walk from the centre of Greenwich. Doesn't look like it faces the road either. Underground parking and much more spacious flat than the new ones on the market I think

Ex council but in a very naice location. Likely to be mostly owner occupied. Slightly over budget but it's only an asking price and there's a lot of brand new stuff coming on the market in competition.
