hi, we are thinking about moving to Lincolnshire from south London. we are basically looking for a safe and nice place to be with kids. my husband is waiting an answer for a job in Lincoln and I have an interview next week (fingers crossed). My job would be within the south bu area but not idea of what does means, any ideas? originally we wanted to based in Lincoln (husband does not drive) but look like I will need to spend my life in the car....any advise on areas to look up/avoid?
many thanks

I have a friend who lives in witham St Hughs. Good value, good for families and accessible. (South bu??)

RaisingSteam · 02/03/2015 23:00

Hi, did you have some typos? Where did you say your job would be.
Lincolnshire is a lovely place to live, if you are moving from South London I can't imagine you'd need to avoid anywhere. I did the opposite move, imagine my culture shock.

estreya · 03/03/2015 18:17

thanks for the answers, the job offer says: base TBC but within the south BU area, I guess I need to go to the interview and find out

I really like Lincoln, it has a nice atmosphere, and its not expensive to live there. Newark is nice and has great transport links being on east coast main line and A1. In Lincoln itself I like the hykham area.
Never heard of south bu.

We made the move 15 years ago from London and never regretted it. If you want to message me and tell me your job areas I can give you more info. Lincoln people always divide it up into north, south. I think Im in the South of the city.

SignoraStronza · 03/03/2015 22:06

Will second Newark - believe the train service to Lincoln/Nottingham is set to become far more frequent too - there is also the East Coast mainline that gets you to Kings Cross in as little as 1hr 15.
Not sure what you mean by South BU.

Inasimilarboat · 03/03/2015 22:13

I live near Newark and work in Lincoln. What sort of things are you looking for? How far can you travel and do you need primary or secondary schools?

estreya · 04/03/2015 16:48

thanks again for the answers, we need to be near Lincoln as husband does not drive (yet). ideally I will be working only 3 days a weeks so driving a bit farther than originally planned shouldn't be a huge issued. so far what I know about my job is that the main base is in Sleaford, the interview will be in Grantham and I will be in the south BU whatever it means...my little girl goes to reception so we need primary school nearby. thanks for looking at my add and advise! lateseptember I will definitely message you!

I expect the South BU is South Business Unit or something to do with the job.

I'd try to position yourself to avoid crossing the town centre with your commute - Bracebridge Heath/North Hykeham. I'm sure people with more recent knowledge will help you out. Good luck, Lincoln will steal your heart.

sophie150 · 04/03/2015 20:34

Is it an NHS job? Think I know the organisation if it is. BU will be business unit. Don't know where that means you will be based though.

estreya · 04/03/2015 20:50

it has already stolen my hart :) went for a first visit last weekend and we loved it
yes sophie150 its an NHS community job, now I know bu means business unit y might be able to find some more info

Agree with RaisingSteam you probably need to be in North Hykeham, Bracebridge Heath, Boultham Park or Doddington Park.

Primary Schools to be considered are Manor Leas, Fosse Way for North Hykeham
Doddington Park - Lesley Manser or St Hughs Catholic which takes non catholics.
Bracebridge - Look at Bracebridge Primary (not sure what its like)
there are Academy schools which take Primary age but they are quite large (although probably not as large as a London Academy)

Lincoln isn't particularly big and transport links are excellent. We are very geared up for bike riding with most routes having cycle lanes.

Good Luck with the job interview. Lincoln is limited in nursing jobs so I cross into Nottinghamshire.

VivaLeBeaver · 04/03/2015 22:40

If the job is going to be based in grantham/sleaford do you need to live in Lincoln? Are you thinking your dh will get a job in Lincoln?

Grantham is a big town and if you lived there not been able to drive would be ok if either dh not working or can get a job in grantham.

Inasimilarboat · 05/03/2015 18:21

My DH works for the NHS community trust and is based in Sleaford! I work in a village other other side of Lincoln.

We live in a village 3 miles from Newark on the A1. 35 mins drive to Sleaford, 30 mins drive to Lincoln (train very easy from either of the Newark stations).

Living in Lincoln sounds ideal but the A15 Lincoln Sleaford route is a nightmare with traffic!

estreya · 02/04/2015 18:47

hi again, looks like we are definitely moving to Lincoln in 4 weeks. Husband got the job and so did I. Now, decisions time ahead.

You were right, South BU, means south business area, i discussed at the interview and i am going to get most of my work around Sleaford/ Grantham, i will be doing only 3 days a weeks, which makes my traveling more reasonable . Husband start new position in 4 weeks in Carlton centre and he does not drive ( he is having his test in 2 weeks, finger crossed he will pass it).
We saw a few houses to rent in different areas on Monday, we loved one in Boultham Park, but looks like there is no way to get to Carlton centre early in the morning ( very early), so husband must drive and we need a second car (more money).
Husband went back today to Lincoln and viewed another nice house, more expensive but reasonable distance to his work even if he has to walk. the negative part is that the nearest school is 1 mile away and falls into St Giles (which i have been told to avoid), the school has a very bad Ofsted report, so i assume it wont be over subscribed and we are likely to get it . Any advise mums? which area will you go for? thanks!

I live in lincs and go to uni in Lincoln I would avoid the giles at all costs! We looked at moving to Lincoln but the primary's around where we could afford were shocking! And our dcs are in an outstanding school that is outstanding in a town near Lincoln so we decided to stay put. Good luck x

OliviaBenson · 02/04/2015 19:59

Could you live in Grantham or Newark and your husband get the train? Schools are much better in Grantham.

estreya · 02/04/2015 21:10

don't think we could...husband needs to be at work at 6 am some times....

Sounds like your hubby has to be able to drive. Living in Lincolnshire somewhat forces learning to drive upon you it is so rural, plus lack of transport links. We moved here from London and my dh had to learn to drive pretty quickly too.
I know Lincoln pretty well and would choose North hykeham/Doddington park as you would both be able to travel to work fairly easily from there given proximity to A46.
Good housing and schools round there too.

RaisingSteam · 02/04/2015 22:08

Can your DH cycle? Apart from the one obvious hill, Lincoln is pretty easy going. Honestly after London it will seem so quiet. I guess there will be loads of buses heading out to Carlton centre so if you are in striking distance of the centre you should be OK.

St Giles probably the only place to avoid, but there are some OK areas just a street or two away. There are always lots of houses to rent along the streets off say Monks Road and Monks Abbey primary does not look too bad? I went to Lincoln Christ's Hospital school which is a pretty OK secondary. Then you have most of your journey the other way from rush hour which should hopefully not be too bad. If they ever build the Eastern Bypass you will be sorted.

Congratulations btw!

snala · 02/04/2015 22:13

Have a look for houses around the hawthorn avenue area or houses behind the Carlton centre. There is a brand new primary school in the area too.

RaisingSteam · 02/04/2015 22:16

I don't still live there so not sure how dodgy that area is.

VivaLeBeaver · 02/04/2015 22:24

Boultham park to Carlton centre is an easy 10-15 min cycle ride.

Down Dixon St, high St, monks rd, outer circle rd. No idea what the primary schools are like in that area.

Another option is Saxilby wihich has a train station, I think the trains start early due it been the sheffield-lincoln line.

Not sure what your budget is but Burton waters would be nice and very cyclable as there's a cycle path by the river from Burton waters into lincoln centre and it would be maybe 20 mins cycle ride.

The estate round Wolsley way may also be an option, good location wise. Not sure what primary school you'd be at from there? Possible still St Giles. The school used to have a good reputation but guess my knowledge may be out of date. The estate itself has certainly always been considered a bit rough.

Mount St primary school is very good. It's a nice area round there but mostly terraced houses so not sure if that's any use?

VivaLeBeaver · 02/04/2015 22:25

I would avoid Monks Rd to be honest.

RaisingSteam · 02/04/2015 22:27

Your DH could even get a moped or small motorbike if you don't want the expense of running a car.
