Removal Men Etiquette

Do you tip furniture removal men after a successful move?

Yes, if they've been pleasant, careful with my stuff and considerate of my new home - putting down mats, floor coverings etc.

I usually buy pizzas for them all for lunch and tip them a fiver each depending on how many days work they've done, and how amenable I'm feeling. Or just 20 quid to the foreman for a few cold drinks on the way home.

I've moved house A LOT Grin

fiorentina · 22/02/2015 21:44

We gave them a crate of beer and some cash.

Nix01 · 22/02/2015 21:49

Thank you

Yes. £10 each. Plus a lot of teas, coffees and biscuits. Move home most years.

RaphaellaTheSpanishWaterDog · 22/02/2015 21:59

We felt ours went beyond the bounds of duty, even managing to lift one of our sofas over the verandah/balcony in order to get it into an upstairs room so we gave them £60 between the four of them plus the usual drinks, bacon rolls and cakes etc over the five days they were with us....

wowfudge · 22/02/2015 22:59

We tipped ours well - the two main guys worked solidly for hours. Help was drafted in for them later in the day because the guy who came round to quote underestimated how much we had and therefore how big a job it was.

RulerLenska · 23/02/2015 01:21

I don't understand this. Why do you tip removal men? Serious question. Do you tip carpet layers, painters, washing machine technicians etc etc too?

Need to know if I'm not au fait with current tipping protocol. Thanks

Primaryteach87 · 23/02/2015 02:12

It doesn't occur to me to tip! Feels like an American thing. We made cups of tea, bacon butties and bought them fish and chips but wouldn't cross my mind to give a cash tip!

wowfudge · 23/02/2015 07:19

Ours went above and beyond Ruler which was why we tipped them.

wowfudge · 23/02/2015 07:20

Oh and we recently tipped a carpet fitter because we weren't able to remove part of the old floor covering, despite hours of effort, before he arrived which was the deal.

I tipped mine £10 each - I think there were 4 of them. They worked so hard and made the move so easy and stressfree which was so important to me. I also provided lots of hot drinks, cakes and biscuits and also a bucket of chilled cans of pop/bottles of water for them to help themselves to through the day.

Primaryteach87 · 25/02/2015 01:21

Seems like I committed a faux par then. Hopefully the copious food, tea and thank you'd made them realise it wasn't me being nasty, genuinely had no idea this was 'a thing'.

Flossiechops · 25/02/2015 07:01

I tipped mine £50 between four of them last year. They were the cheapest quote so I already felt better off but they worked so hard and made it far less stressful on the day.

MaybeDoctor · 25/02/2015 07:06

I gave them an envelope with £10 each, x 5 or 6 as there were slightly different guys each day for packing and moving. Individual envelopes I mean.

No idea if this was the right thing to do or not.

VeryPunny · 25/02/2015 08:56

We gave the chief mover £100 at the end of day one to split as he saw fit - we had a number of different blokes turn up during the move. They packed on day 1 and did the move on day 2 and went above and beyond. Worth every penny.

I'd always expect to tip removal men - don't know why when I wouldn't tip other trades.

FunMitFlags · 25/02/2015 09:21

Yes, beer and cash here.

Ours were unfailingly helpful and polite even with several hours delay in getting the keys. They worked in torrential rain and sleet and didn't finish until 7/8 PM on the day we moved in, then had a long drive back home.

RyanAirVeteran · 25/02/2015 09:26

All of you who move every year or so, just one question WHY ??

I am coming out of here in a box.

I understand that you tippers are saying the men were polite and hardworking - but isn't that anyone employed to do a job for you is meant to be?

I know, in reality they aren't all polite and hardworking, but really fail to understand why you would pay more (by tipping). I as a customer am also polite to them and always make refreshments for removers but tipping is not in the equation.

Signing out...a hard working, polite employee, who is known for going beyond the bounds of duty, works long hours outwith normal contracted hours but never expects a tip. I do appreciate pay rises when they are on the go (not for a while) and isn't that the way it should be?

wowfudge · 25/02/2015 16:55

I consider I have contracted the services of a company for a job which it is highly likely doesn't pay the people doing the actual - let's face it - hard slog a great deal and tips go straight to them as a sign of my gratitude. Good removal men are worth their weight in gold. I'm reasonably well off (not a stealth boast at all) so I don't mind showing my appreciation for a job I physically couldn't do myself.

MrsSparkles · 26/02/2015 12:25

Wowfudge I agree - I like the people doing the work to know how grateful I am. I also called my moving company to tell them how pleased I was and gave the lead mover £100 (for 4/5 guys) to buy drinks, to take as cash - whatever they like. But I like to say thanks.

rumbelina · 26/02/2015 12:50

Ours charged hourly and worked so hard (and were therefore so cheap) that we tipped them £20 each.

Using the same company again soon and will definitely tip them again if they provide the same service.

I know you don't have to but they were proper grafters so they saved us money.

rumbelina · 26/02/2015 12:51

That was £20 each for two BTW

wowfudge · 26/02/2015 13:04

Rumbelina - that's what we gave the two main guys who worked on our move for about ten hours. I understand some people think they are being paid anyway, but I think it's a bit tight not to tip in a number of situations.
