Need somewhere within 1.5hrs of Cambridge

We need to find somewhere to rent within an hour or hour and half of Cambridge. Dh job will be there. Can't afford Cambridge itself.

Need 4 bedrooms (one as an office for Dh who will work from home 2-3days a week). All the usual, good schools, need reasonable transport links (A1?)

Renting to start with, budget of £650-£750 a month. Help me find somewhere, I'm driving myself mad on rightmove!

Three bedrooms, but nice, and close in.

runlikeagirl · 18/02/2015 16:04

Unfortunately we can't afford the rent and mortgage on current place at same time. And our mortgage is more than rent up here, so would lose money letting it out.

Hmm. We might need to rethink.

Might look at some villages North of Peterborough.

It sounds like you are going to need to sell up in Leeds and move further south.

Are there benefits to you of living in or near Bedford in terms of support from your in-laws or is that a prospect you'd rather avoid Smile Could you get a part time job which would help with the high housing cost of living down here?
I know someone who has recently moved to a village about 10 miles outside of Bedford. Amazing value when compared to London admittedly but their children went straight into an outstanding state primary school with no issues.

ragged · 18/02/2015 18:27

Are you planning for him to commute daily to Cambridge or just a few times a month? How often does he need to be in the office, and for how many days in a row?

runlikeagirl · 18/02/2015 18:59

He only needs to be in office a couple of times a month, but he is finding the remote working very hard. So ideally he'd do two consecutive days in office and the rest at home.

I could definitely work, I'm a secondary teacher. But there so few part time jobs advertised and I don't think I could hack full time teaching in the current climate.

I'm on opposed to Bedford, although I don't want to be too close ;) My parents live in Hertfordshire so it would be nice to closer to them too. If only it weren't so expensive.

Sorry I'm dim. Do you mean he could go in 2 consecutive days during a whole month or 2 consecutive days per week? You must mean 2 days/week to be considering a whole family move, yes?

runlikeagirl · 18/02/2015 19:25

2 a week.

I'd look at Norwich or towns/villages to the south, Attleborough was mentioned, also Wymondham etc.
A11 has been duelled so easy trip to Cambridge and Norfolk has lots of offer for families.

ragged · 18/02/2015 19:34

If you could go to 850/month you could get somewhere in Attleborough (on train line) or Wisbech (Wisbech not well thought of, mind). If you go to 3 bed you can fit in your budget for either of those. Or cheaper if you go for a smaller village near Wisbech (back end of nowhere).

pinkfrocks · 18/02/2015 19:43

If he only has to sleep over 2 nights a week then why doesn't he just do a hotel or B&B? Lots of men/ women do. It doesn't make sense to rent somewhere if he only uses it for half the week or less.

roneik · 18/02/2015 19:48

.Carlton Collville on the outskirts of Lowestoft is nice and within the rent band you quote. It's about 80 miles from Cambridge and roughly hour and a half by road.

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 18/02/2015 19:55

^I had a look at Haverhill on RightMove - 20 miles from Cambridge and one of the places that are affordable in the area^

Helluvahole Haverhill isn't as bad as it used to be, it has a cinema , sports centre AND a tesco HAND car wash now Grin

The villages around are nice and the commute to Cambridge is about 30 mins although it takes longer in rush hour (there are regular buses if you want to avoid parking charges)

PiratePanda · 18/02/2015 20:49

You REALLY need to be on the train. Peterborough for that money.

PeaceOfWildThings · 18/02/2015 20:54

st ives, £895pcm

runlikeagirl · 18/02/2015 20:54

pinkfrocks the place to rent is for all of us to live. He will stay in Cambridge for one night a week, but still needs to be closer than the current 3+ hours.

I will look more closely at our budget, see what we can do.

OP posts:
PeaceOfWildThings · 18/02/2015 20:55

st ives, 3 bed, under 700pcm

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 18/02/2015 21:00

Yep, we live in St Ives, rent for our 3 br is 725 per month.

PeaceOfWildThings · 18/02/2015 21:08

So yoi have a house now, and a mortgage? Would it not be possible to sell that, and to hang on there until the house is sold?

runlikeagirl · 18/02/2015 21:10

We would wait until house up here sold. But we can't buy down there as we wouldn't have enough equity/deposit and houses are so much more expensive.

There are quite a few that fit the bill in Corby too...

Seriouslyffs · 18/02/2015 21:22

What about Colchester? Excellent schools, no train and on the outside of travelling time though. I wouldn't want to commit to it long term.
Is DH likely to be in Cambridge long term? If so I'd move as near as possible squish in somewhere and save- otherwise surely you'd need to move again in a few years.

Quite a few in Welli gborough.

Sleepyhoglet · 18/02/2015 21:26

Thetford

runlikeagirl · 18/02/2015 21:31

Thanks. Likely that Dh will be there for a long while.

Corby came up on a few of my searches, I've never been but heard it wasn't er very nice?
