Anyone used the new Valspar paint in B&Q?

WalkingThePlank · 17/02/2015 14:59

Went to B&Q to collect some Dulux samples but they now seem to be selling Valspar in its place. I've found various negative reviews about it so looking for some more balanced reviews here. I understand there is a normal and a premium range too but not sure of the difference as there seems to be no literature about it.

TIA

I had a trial a year or so ago, and I was very impressed by the coverage. I don't know why people don't rate it. I did use a very pale colour, and it looked very good.
I finished the job and did a few other jobs before christmas with white Vaspar, and am very pleased with the result there.

Just wanted to share...
I have just finished using the Valspar premium paint from B&Q. Had some doubts as I haven't used this before. It is expensive at 2.5L for £28 but, It was a great success. It went on really well. I used Morning grey and Summer grey. The tones worked well together. It has a primer built in, but I wanted to use 3 coats of paint on the wall anyway.
There is a great range of colours to choose from.
So give it a go..

I purchased Valspar 700, painted the walls this week WOW!!!! www.mumsnet.com/emo/te/1.gif.pagespeed.ce.Pm7krOc06b.gif there is NO SMELL, NO MESS when painting and I purchased 5litres with the intention of having to do 2 coat's. Coverage was so good I only needed to do 1 COAT. In my opinion the pigment is as good as Farrow and Ball paint, superior by far to Dulux Endurance Paint. After painting the wall's I needed to give the celling a refresh coat, that was with a Dulux white paint that I had already purchased. Yes! I did get some Dulux paint on my Valspar wall, I was able to wipe it off immediately and it did not effect my Valspar painted wall at all. This was just 1hour after painting my wall's. After 7 days this paint is scrubbable. I am purchasing more of a different colour this weekend for my hallway. I am very impressed with this paint.www.mumsnet.com/emo/te/1.gif.pagespeed.ce.Pm7krOc06b.gif

Barfi do you work for Valspar? Hmm

Barfi · 04/08/2017 23:13

No I don't sorry!, Previously I was a big fan of farrow and ball paint, it's just a little expensive.
I'm really pleased I have found a cheaper paint but with equal quality.

mg28 · 04/08/2017 23:28

I love it! The paint is great for almost every surface!

MeltorPeltor · 04/08/2017 23:32

From professionals I know they really rate it BUT there was an issue with an additive being removed in certain batches that subsequently caused the paint to 'go off' leaving rooms smelling of cat piss. All now corrected now apparently.

user1493630944 · 04/08/2017 23:38

The paint going off and causing an awful smell was referred to in a radio programme this week. The company had apparently initially denied that the awful smell was anything to do with the paint. Later it was apparently acknowledged, but that does not inspire confidence in the company, even if the issue has now been dealt with.

Barfi · 05/08/2017 07:43

I can understand that, However, my experience with this paint is 100% positive from me. Just happy that they have corrected any past issues.😄
It was a spur of the moment purchase for me, I admit that I had not seen any review for this paint, i glad that I had not, because I probaly would not have tried this.😔 I would have missed out😜

Try Googling 'smelly Valspar paint'.

StatisticallyChallenged · 06/08/2017 13:32

Had a complete disaster with the premium eggshell, ended up costing us hundreds of pounds extra to get the work redone. Streaky, hideous mess.

They refused to do anything about it, claiming the problem was the primer - even though they told us the primer was correct. It had the same problem with no primer...

Afishcalledchips · 06/08/2017 13:48

I can't comment on Valspar because I've not used it, but I would recommend Leyland paint. We've used gallons of their trade white in our renovation and it's good quality, highly pigmented white. They do a colour mixing service too, which we've had a grey from. The assistant in our local shop was really helpful and knowledgeable about colour tones etc. The paint was good quality too, and a massive range.

Radio 4 were talking about Valpar paint on one of their shows recently. Apparently some of it as alluded by a PP smelled of cat pee. They interviewed a woman who was suffering as she had her hallway done and the whole house smelled of wee. And a painter and decorator who was reimbursed for the work he had done using Valspar as he had to redo a week's worth of work.

I've always found Dulux Trade Diamond Matt to be superb. You can scrub it without it polishing. Also avoid the DIY sheds if you can and go to a Trade Paints or Brewers type place as they seem to know what they're talking about.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/08/2017 17:56

I have used valspar for our living room, bedroom, dining room and have had no catty smells. Slightly odd 'peeling skin' effect when removing frog tape which meant I had to redo a whole wall. However, I've heard worse reviews about the bathroom paint but as usual i have the exact colour in mind and nowhere but valspar does it- unless anyone knows if any of these other colour mixing brands mix bathroom paint? Or if others like colours premium that claim any surface/any room can be used in a bathroom?

StatisticallyChallenged · 07/08/2017 19:21

Dulux certainly used to mix kitchen and bathroom paint, although we've used endurance instead in both of ours.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/08/2017 19:26

Statistically challenged that's interesting- have they stood up to the challenge? (No pun intended Grin)
Our bathroom wall gets quite mildewy as we have a crap window and so I assumed we would really need bathroom paint?

StatisticallyChallenged · 07/08/2017 20:26

Ours is single glazed and wet as heck and seems ok. You can wipe it down no problem too

littletwofeet · 07/08/2017 20:52

My brother is a painter. He says valspar premium or trade is the best out of all the paints he's used. He says the other valspar (can't remember the name but it's cheaper than the premium is not that good).

He said the paint is quite hard to work with though and fast drying so that's why people may struggle with it find it streaky. He says if you're getting a professional in or are good at painting to use it but normally says if someone is doing it themselves and are not used to paining/a bit unsure then a different paint is easier to work with.

If done properly, especially with the primer Valspar lasts a lot better than others and is completely wipable.

Also-the different colours are mixed with different bases (to do with the different pigments or something). Base 'C' takes more coats than the others as can look patchy if not done right. I only know as DB was doing some work for me and one of the colours I picked was base C and he made me change it!

Just realised I may need to spend less time discussing paint with DB.

@thenew - I've used Dulux Diamond Matt in bathrooms and kitchens and I've had it mixed to colour match Farrow & Ball. It's been brilliant in the bathrooms, easy to wipe if needed, really good coverage.

I think that the Diamond Matt might be the trade equivalent of Endurance but idk. I had mine mixed at a trade place but I'm not trade.
