Anyone used the new Valspar paint in B&Q?

WalkingThePlank · 17/02/2015 14:59

Went to B&Q to collect some Dulux samples but they now seem to be selling Valspar in its place. I've found various negative reviews about it so looking for some more balanced reviews here. I understand there is a normal and a premium range too but not sure of the difference as there seems to be no literature about it.

TIA

I used the premium, with built in primer, a few months ago on newly plastered shower-room walls - loved it. Got a perfect match to the contrast tiles, and the paint went on easily and looks really good. Did need two coats though. Plan to use it again at Easter to do a sunroom, again picking out a shade of the wallpaper to colour match.

Meant to say thanks to Unwilling for the heads-up on the premium gloss. I'm a bit frightened of gloss painting but will give it a go for the window sills and skirting boards.
With gloss, how important is it to sand between coats these days?

Luckystar82 · 20/02/2015 15:04

The colours on the Valspar advert are gross!

Reminds me of Changing Rooms circa 1997. Thought we had moved on!

Amateur a friend came round today who is a professional painter & decorator. I showed him the walls we've painted with Valspar Blush & he wasn't impressed. He said that he used it when a customer wanted it and it is really poor quality - coverage difficult to achieve, needs lots of coats. He said Dulux is best.

AmateurSeamstress · 21/02/2015 15:36

Oh no Miranda! I still reckon our bright valspar wall looks ok.

MirandaGoshawk · 23/02/2015 18:12

He is very fussy & doesn't like doing more that two coats (time is money!). My room that DH painted with Valspar also looks fine now that he's put another coat on.

Pigleychez · 23/02/2015 18:52

I painted the kitchen in Willow Green (kitchen and Bathroom paint). I had no trouble with it at all and found it went on fine and covered a darker green colour just fine in one coat.

dippingmytoeinagain · 23/02/2015 20:19

A bad experience here, very poor adherance despite very thorough and careful prep. And B&Q staff were unhelpful to the point of rudeness, claiming my poor prep was the cause of the problem and they wouldn't have it any other way. Seems like there are really varied reviews of this brand...

I am a Category Expert, dealing with Painting and Decorating for DIY/Trade Counter, also I am a fully qualified Painter and Decorator. I know a lot about paint and often get asked about various brands of paint. More important to know is not so much the brands of paint but knowing the difference between trade and retail paint.
You by a tin of paint from any of the manufactures unless it says 'Trade' then you are buying 'Retail' paint.

Retail paint looks thick as the brush goes into the paint and as it goes on the wall but when it dries it looks patchy and a second and may be third coat is necessary to achieve a satisfactory finish. The reason why the paint has added starch type compounds to make the paint look thick,

Trade paint has better pigmentation and opacity ( how well it covers) and increased coverage (how far it spreads).

Some other websites say Trade paint is not worth the extra expence and use a Retail regardless of how many coats are necessary. Well I stand by what I tell customers and I genuinely mean it trade paints is better and more economical to use.

I am always happy to advise anyone who wants help, I am involved in creating guides to DIY for the company I work for. I may not have the answer to all your questions but I know plenty of suppliers who will have the answer.

I used Valspar masonry paint on the outside of our house. It needed two coats over the bare render but has been fine so far. Good range of colours.

puffylovett · 25/02/2015 23:25

I've used valspar premium emulsion, colour matched to farrow and ball colours. I was really impressed with the coverage over a vile bright red (I used the India yellow equivalent, so it was a very strong colour).

I've also just painted my kitchen cabinets with the premium eggshell, and they look fantastic. So far so good. They've stood up to a few knocks and there are no brush marks - I've actually been amazed as my paintwork is not professional by any stretch of the imagination! The colour match to Pigeon was ok ish.
However I've had a sample pot colour matched to French gray that is really good, and I will be using that In my front room soon. I honestly can't tell the difference between the valspar and the f and b, and believe me I go In that room and check at least a dozen times a day!

petewilder62 · 11/11/2015 14:59

Valspar a cautionary tale…
Have had appaling experience with Valspar paint colour matching. Just didn't cover with multiple coats and using their own primer. Here's what their complaints department had to say: "For any colour which is highly pigmented (Base B or C), the levels of titanium dioxide are significantly reduced to enable the paint to be tinted to a darker colour. Titanium dioxide is the element in paint which provides complete hiding. It is expected for darker colours to hide poorly this is not just with Valspar paints but with all other paint brands. In effect, the hide of highly pigmented paints is not indicative of poor quality paint."
Really? So inability to "hide" is not indicative of a piss poor paint – well I'll let the other paint manufacturers know!

I used the premium one which was mixed to match using an old bit of painted wallpaper which they scanned. The colour match was amazing and it covered really well.

wowfudge · 11/11/2015 21:27

pete that is shockingly bad. Did you use a roller or a brush? We used paint that's almost that colour, perhaps slightly less red, and it was a B&Q own brand - Colours - and covered well.

MrsTommyGirl · 11/04/2016 23:43

I've just had such a terrible painting experience with Valspar that I've joined mumsnet specifically to advise you to avoid it.

I bought it in the first place because I loved the colour choices, B&Q are backing it and mumsnet recommend it. I bought the premium version and mixed it with the add-on accessory of glitter for my child's room. I've painted heaps of rooms before (at home DIY with everything from Dulux to Farrow & Ball) and I followed the tin's instructions precisely. However when dry, in certain areas the paint cracked and huge scrolls of painted lifted off the walls. I was horrified.

I went back to B&Q for advice with photographs and they said they'd never heard of this issue before so I sanded and repainted, hopefully.

But it happened again. So I called in my painter decorator who kindly came late in the evening to see. He immediately recognised the issue and explained Valspar can't be painted directly onto filler, despite the instructions to the contrary on the tin. The tin clearly says it can be used as a primer, or without primer. I had used filler on cracks and over picture holes in the walls. The decorator said he had also experienced the same issue and had reported it to the Guildford store twice. I'm going in tomorrow to tell them what happened to me and to find out why they didn't share this information when I asked them, or why it's not being reported internally. I'm sharing with you because the net effect is it has made a huge mess of the walls. The paint needs removing, refilling and repainting at the very least, otherwise the walls will need skimming. In theory I'll now need to buy more of this dreadful paint and start again in the places where it peeled off. I'm absolutely gutted and hope they amend their product information soon so no one else has this problem.

Meantime, if you read this watch out! Or buy any other brand and avoid my disaster. I certainly won't buy it again.

simmo888 · 22/10/2016 22:54

we used this paint, went b and q as doing our bathroom, cost farmore than leading brands and is appalling.after 3 coats its nothing like covered a light green.the paint drags and wipes off after a few seconds when trying toblend.i printed reviews toshow b and q and still they blame us,we got a refund but trying to cover this crap has taken 2 weeks and had to sand the whole room.what should have taken a few days has taken 3 weeks and cost a lot of money.do not buy valspar from b and q,stick with dulux or johnstons paint.much better and a lot cheaper.i will never go to b and q again.we are still battling to put our walls right even now.look at valspar reviews.DO NOT USE

JanetK1 · 21/01/2017 15:08

Would not normally post about a product, but as Valspar paint is marketing itself towards children and families I am alarmed. This is the worst paint I have ever used, I had three different colours mixed, and on all walls the paint has cracked, peeled, bubbled and reacted, shocking coverage . I have received expert advice who say it is bad reaction from the paint product. Both BQ & Valspar are trying to say it is moisture, which is untrue. It is costing me double the original amount to repair the damage. I am in the process of seeking legal advice. Please do not use any valspar paints.

Mike61 · 30/03/2017 20:24

I spent some time using the Valspar online paint app and chose the colour for my living room. When I got to B & QI thought I should check the colour using their colour cards. The colour shared no resemblance to the one I have chosen online.
I chose another but when I got home and started using the paint it was contaminated with white dried paint! I concluded that the machine used to mix the paint had not been cleaned.

The paint covered the wall well and dried quickly but I will go back to the store and complain about the contamination.

abeandhalo · 30/03/2017 20:30

We really didn't rate it when we bought it for the new house and ended up painting over it with another brand. The coverage was poor.

SavoyCabbage · 30/03/2017 20:31

We repainted our whole house all at once using Dulux and Valspar and the Calspar premium was much better than the Dulux. A year down the line and I am repainting the Dulux rooms.

jigster01 · 30/03/2017 20:41

We painted my DS newly plastered bedroom in valspar premium ...Looks great 4mths later ..Very pleased with it

kittybiscuits · 30/03/2017 20:43

SussexBonfireViking · 30/03/2017 20:43

In B&Q it has a big sign on it saying MumsNet approved Hmm

the lady in B&Q said that Dulux add chalk to their paint to make it thicker and the Valspar with primer can take scrubbing and would be fine

BonjourMeDarlin · 30/03/2017 20:48

There was competition/product testing for this paint on here a couple weeks ago.
