Best area around Newcastle near a Metro station

I am looking to purchase a house (rather than a flat) around Newcastle. Must be within walking distance to a Metro station as I have to travel to work in Jesmond everyday.

Originally set my sights on Tynemouth, Whitley Bay, Jesmond and Gosforth but all out of my budget. Where is next best place for a young professional?

Thank you

Some parts of North Shields are nice if you like Tynemouth. Very close to Tynemouth without the price tag and has a metro station but you can still get the large terraced properties with high ceilings and original features. Sandyford is much more central and close to Jesmond and the town centre but again, more affordable. Heaton is also another possibility, rather studenty but also favoured by young professionals. How much are you looking to spend?

Northumberland Park? West Monkseaton?

MsMessyandtheTidyBoys · 15/02/2015 21:47

I live in Heaton and commute to work via metro. V affordable and good mix of young professionals, students and families.

PretzelPrincess · 15/02/2015 21:51

Fenham. No metro but plenty of buses and is actually walking distance of Jesmond if your really keen.

TheOddity · 15/02/2015 21:52

High Heaton or Northumberland Park both good. The former for your twenty somethings, the latter for thirties/families/bigger houses. I would say if you work in Jesmond, you could actually even walk from Heaton through Jesmond Dene in summer.
I have lived in Sandyford too which is a nice area position wise to town and Jesmond but was put off as I got burgled there. I prefer nearer the coast, you get more space.

Wow thank you so much for all the responses! My budget is 150k but probably closer to 130k.

What about South of the river, can anyone tell me what Pelaw or Felling are like? I wouldn't want to be as far as South Shields but would consider anything closer if recommended. Thank you Smile

What about benton/forest hall?

SolomanDaisy · 16/02/2015 08:28

Are you looking for a house or a flat? If you're prepared to go for a flat, the tynemouth end of North Shields would be a good possibility. You'd be able to walk to North Shields metro, but also to tynemouth and the beach and it is an area with a good mix of young professionals and families.

Some nice areas in hebburn/south shields

agnesrose86 · 16/02/2015 19:36

Definitely Heaton or North Shields with your budget. Wouldn't go south of the river.

MrsCakesPrecognition · 16/02/2015 19:41

Longbenton?

Kieron79 · 16/02/2015 20:23

Lived south of river as a FTB (Hebburn) and wouldn't do so again, felt really cut off also taxi is expensive to get back home from city centre
Anywhere Coastal is out of question with that budget unless your after a small flat?
Heaton is heavily student populated as is most of jesmond but would struggle to even get a flat there anyway, longbenton area is probs more affordable, again flat potentially achievable in benton

Mostlyjustaluker · 16/02/2015 20:24

Are you after a house or flat? How many bedrooms?

Mostlyjustaluker · 16/02/2015 20:25

Sorry just read post. Why a house rather than flat?

Mostlyjustaluker · 16/02/2015 20:29

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-43595128.html North Shields

SolomanDaisy · 16/02/2015 20:29

My message was pointless, since I somehow missed that you're looking for a house. Would a two bed do? You might get one in the tynemouth bit of north shields for that budget.

Kieron79 · 16/02/2015 20:35

Same, oops

Mostlyjustaluker · 16/02/2015 20:35

If you go for the tynemouth side of North Shields it can be closer to tynemouth metro than North Shields metro.

If you are after a project

Some bits of forest hall and Benton are nice, there's been a few people moved to MILs street which she's not best pleased about!

Have you thought about Gateshead? NWT wrong with south Tyneside. I'm a proud hebburn lass meself!

More North Shields than tynemouth but in my opinion it is every nice.

This is St Peter's basin, within walking distance of the Quayside/ouseburn etc. Lovely area overlooking the river. My friend used to live there and loved it.

Turquoisetamborine · 16/02/2015 21:04

Or what about St James' Village? Right next to Gateshead stadium metro station. I like south of the river as I find it less frantic.
I lived in Heaton and it drove me mad, too many students, too many people and cars. You can't even drive easily up the streets as people are parked on both sides so can only take one car at a time.
