I think I want to live in Wymondham, Norfolk. Any reasons I might not want to?

It looks nice, good schools, train station. Not far from the sea.

What's wrong with it?

I am pretty sure your kids would both be offered school places outside Wymondham. Someone on MN posted a link to chart (sorry, can't find it now!) showing the number of spaces/on wait list at each secondary in autumn 2014. I think it was 60+ waiting for Wymondham, that might be 12-30 for a now-yr7 space. I suppose being in catchment might let you leapfrog over some of the others on the lists.

I suspect your little one would get in a local school before your KS3 kid... BUT, I know someone near airport got into Wymondham in autumn 2013; that just happened to be a low intake across county. So not always impossible.

You should ring the County Admissions team to ask other questions.

Sheringham High got county's best GCSE results last yr, btw.

Honeydragon · 07/02/2015 20:15

I heard Sheringham has a Mahoosive waiting list though

(Found the link at last!)
Bless TalkinPeace and her random county selections; this says Sheringham has spaces for current yr7s.

You are Nuts if you plan to live in Sheringham & commute to London, though.

lljkk · 07/02/2015 20:24

Oh no, what I said about spaces was wrong... but anyway, Wymondham way overdubbed compared to any other.

Honeydragon · 07/02/2015 20:40

Oh you absolute star, that's brilliant Thanks

Wymondham Highs off stead report was slightly better than ds's current school and has spaces so if there's stil spaces I suppose it would be worth enquiring if we did like the area.

Admissions is thru county hall, phone for a chat.
Some forms here.

I'm not optimistic at all about you getting a quick place in W, but good luck.

MrsJacksonAvery · 07/02/2015 22:05

V.bizarre to see this in my active convos. Honeydragon - I work at Wymondham High. As of last week, we had one place left in yr7. PM me if you have any questions.

Honeydragon · 07/02/2015 22:12

Thank you Smile

It would be for year eight though by the time we moved, if we could get a place and a house.

We're so restricted on Secondaries round here, so it's nearest or nothing, it's a whole new ball game thinking about relocating Confused

I know what you mean though, I find it bizarre when my little town pops up on here Grin

Bit of time for kids to come and go. They're leaving the next nearest (the de Souza academy) in droves at the mo.

ChangeYouFucker · 07/02/2015 22:26

What's wrong with the de Souza academy? Out of interst (sorry to hyjack thread).

MrsJacksonAvery · 07/02/2015 22:32

Don't know details - just that we seem to be getting lots of their kids recently. There's a lot of bad feeling locally towards these academies.

Honeydragon · 07/02/2015 22:34

Hijack away, im interested too.

I was fascinated by the amount of schools in Norfolk that went Acadamy, we were thinking about it eighteen months ago, but that put us of a bit.

OP posts:
MrsJacksonAvery · 07/02/2015 22:38

I think as a 'failing' LEA, Norfolk have put loads of pressure on schools to become academies so it's no longer their responsibility, IMHO. We're an academy but not within a trust. Day-to-day running of the school hasn't changed as we're still accountable to the school's governing body just not the LEA.

MrsJacksonAvery · 07/02/2015 22:46

Just scanning through your other questions, OP.

Supermarkets - we have a new Morrison's - whoop! Most people still travel the ten mins to Tesco/Sainsburys, both south Norwich.

Also - someone else said that if you're outside catchment, you won't get in. Not true. Loads of students from Hethersett, Cringleford, Hingham, Mulbarton. If there are spaces, you can get in, regardless of where you live. The current yr9 is quite small and we've taken a number of students in this academic year.

Also - the infant and junior schools are all currently expanding to be full primaries so there will be more spaces. Who knows what the knock-on effect will be for the High and how it will be dealt with.

Honeydragon · 07/02/2015 22:49

Oh that's worth knowing, my towns developing the same. New building coming up, and panic about where the hell to put new kids Confused

Hassled · 07/02/2015 22:55

This sort of thing may be why people are running from the Inspiration Trust.

throckenholt · 08/02/2015 08:52

now has an Aldi too - ooh - I didn't know that - when did that open ?! Wymondham is fairly close to where I live and the only other Lidl/Aldi type shops are Attleborough (have to make a special trip) or the wrong side of Norwich.

I haven't read the rest of the thread (got sidetracked by aldi !) - one comment on schools - Wymondham High is the catchment school for some villages near where I live and they seem to have no problems getting in, and the kids like it. Not sure what it is like for people moving in without filtering in from the feeder primaries.

My feeling - Wymondham, nice small town, nice old centre (nothing much in terms of shops), dominated by housing estates. Quick and easy access to Norwich (which is a lovely city that has everything you would need). Fast access to other places because on the A11.

Medoc · 08/02/2015 09:02

May I just ask (because of my shocking ignorance, and I have never heard of the town) is it pronounced 'why-mund-um' or 'wi-mund-um', or something eslr entirely?

throckenholt · 08/02/2015 09:04

Wind'm Grin Sure sign of being an incomer by calling it Y-mond-ham :)

lljkk · 08/02/2015 09:32

There is a Y-mond-um in Leicestershire. Just to confuse you. (Tiny hamlet)

Medoc · 08/02/2015 09:48

Ah! You see, I'm so glad I asked now!
Dare I ask about Saxemundham?

loveableshoulder · 08/02/2015 14:05

Mrsjackson I'm in Mulbarton and was under the impression that no kids ffrom here can get into Wymondham schools. Do you know much about this?
