What would you choose??? And why?

That's it really.

Another big vote for induction here - I would never go back to anything else. So easy to clean, and so controllable - down as well as up! And so safe! Really, it's a no-brainer Grin

ARightOldPickle · 26/01/2015 21:29

Another one who loves their induction hob. We switched about 6 years ago and I would never go back, it's fantastic!

Parietal · 26/01/2015 21:34

induction. I just spent far too much money replacing a gas hob with induction, because it is great.

chefs may use gas, but they don't have to clean the thing. induction is also safer and can get a really low heat to simmer things - gas can't do low temperatures well.

motleymop · 26/01/2015 21:52

Induction all the way! Who needs to spend hours scrubbing the parts of a gas hob. Induction hobs are so responsive, it's quite amazing. And they are safe. You won't regret it! I also bought one with a flexinduction zone, which is useful.

CointreauVersial · 26/01/2015 22:05

Induction!

I love how easy it is to clean - nothing ever bakes on. No fiddly burners and racks to clean around.

And if you turn the heat down, it's instant.

HollyBdenum · 26/01/2015 22:18

I think it comes down to budget. If you are prepared to pay the price of a decent induction hob, I think it is probably the best all-round choice.

If the price makes you wince, then I am very happy with this gas hob.

Another one with a glass gas hob. Pan supports go in the dishwasher and then glass top wipes clean.

Like someone else mentioned to get an induction hob with good reviews we would have had to spend three times as much. Anecdotally, the people I know with inductions have struggled with reliability, and have had to replace (or get replaced under warranty) in a relatively short space of time.

MajesticWhine · 26/01/2015 22:25

I've got gas. I think I would like to change to induction though. My gas rings somehow seem to lose a bit of the flow over the years.

myron · 26/01/2015 23:40

I have a Neff flexinduction hob alongside a gas wok burner so I have the best of both worlds Grin

fussychica · 27/01/2015 10:15

I love my new induction. Never thought I cheat on gas after 35 years together but a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do and I LTB Grin

Neff is his name and he's very smooth, dark and easy to control - everything you need in a man hob.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/01/2015 10:23

You can put a teatowel under the frying pan induction hobs & it catches the fat splatters.

Try doing that on gas.

trice · 27/01/2015 10:26

Induction. No contest. Quicker, cleaner, safer, easier.

bobs123 · 27/01/2015 10:27

I'm using an electric hob - those solid round black things that have no control whatsoever...hate it Angry - so miss my Neff gas hob, but unfortunately that's what you get in a rental!

So when I get round to moving....what is the cost of buying induction vs gas? And the cost thereafter? Also, what happens if you use a pan on an induction hob you're not supposed to?

HollyBdenum · 27/01/2015 10:37

Gas is around £100 for basic, £200-300 for attractive and good quality and then you can get much more expensive.

Induction is around £300 for basic and around £600-800 for the equivalent of a £250 gas hob.

If you have an £800 hob budget, induction is worth it. If you have a £300 budget, either get gas or see if you can get a more expensive ex-display induction hob reduced to your budget.

Things to avoid in cheaper models are pulsing temperatures where the heat sort of flickers which will cause problems with things which need a delicate simmering, and induction plates which are very prescriptive about the size of pan you can use - look for a flexible job if you can.

Eastpoint · 27/01/2015 10:37

I have an induction hob with flexible rings & a gas wok burner. We eat a lot of stir fries & I am happy with this set up. The hob is by Siemens & came with a set of pans.

HollyBdenum · 27/01/2015 10:38

If you use the wrong sort of pan, it just won't heat up.

bobs123 · 27/01/2015 10:42

Thanks for that. Had a look and Neff seem to do some decent induction hobs at the £400 mark...just doing my research while dreaming of the future in my perfect kitchen...!

Thisissomething · 27/01/2015 10:44

I used to love gas and was tempted to install a gas bottle and lose a cupboard in my kitchen in order to do this ( no gas ). So glad I did not. Love induction now, so easy quick and clean. Lots of control, much more so in my opinion than gas.
Took a cooking glass recently and the chefs said they much prefered induction as well.

specialsubject · 27/01/2015 16:02

definite marmite situation here!

I spend far less time cleaning my gas hob than the old electric one, because it is controllable so things boil over far less often. I can leave things to simmer; unheard of before!

BTW LPG bottles go outside the house, not inside. So no space lost.

specialsubject · 27/01/2015 16:03

ps absolutely no reason to take it all apart every night and put it through the dishwasher!

Mrsladybirdface · 27/01/2015 16:15

we have the IKEA induction hob and it's brilliant was less that £300 I'm sure, would recommend

GuinevereOfTheRoyalCourt · 27/01/2015 16:35

Gas every time.

Because I hate teflon non-stick frying pans with a vengeance. I like proper non-stick French pans that you have to season. Unfortunately the lightweight ones that I'm particularly fond of warp slightly with heat - so they wouldn't work on induction.

uncomfortablydumb · 27/01/2015 18:12

Induction. Absolutely.

Marmitelover55 · 27/01/2015 18:15

Gas Smile

2madboys · 27/01/2015 18:16

Have had my Neff induction hob for 10 years and not a single problem - love it. And I no longer get the urge to get the Hoover out as I did with my old gas hob which was always full of crumbs!
