Can't tell if this is deliberate super cool retro decor - or a deceased old lady?

I'm with Pooka - no self-respecting hipster would have a candlewick bedspread (especially one with a hole in it)! And the Orla Kiely towel was obviously a present to the old lady, who employs a cleaner. That's my two-penn'orth!

ravenAK · 29/12/2014 18:26

House in multiple occupancy? Elderly owner-occupier with dc/gdc fannying it up around her with a view to selling it when she, erm, moves on?

Either that or my parents haven't told me they've moved...Grin.

minipie · 29/12/2014 18:31

Old lady definitely. Done up houses round there have dark blue walls, ironic stuffed animals and industrial style light fittings.

It's an amazing location and (believe it or not) an absolute bargain at that price.

Somethingtodo · 29/12/2014 18:39

Looks like it inspired a lot of buyers to compete as it went for a further £60k ABOVE asking price £1750...

Imagine she was a truly stylish extravagant ORIGINAL 70's Islington hipster - who was bold, brave and creative and stuck with what she loved confidently for over 50 years - not swayed by fashion.....good for her !! - hope that she has downsized/moved to resi and brought her incredible flair with her to illuminate her new surroundings....

Nah, it's the tablet. We don't get on. I've given up going back and editing my posts now because I'd be here till the next millennium.

only a slight exaggeration

HollyBdenum · 29/12/2014 18:58

It looks like real art on the walls, along with expensive rugs that she collected during her travels. She was probably friends with several renowned artists and has lots of their early work from before they were famous.

CelesteToTheDance · 29/12/2014 19:00

Old person, nobody under forty would own old fashioned televisions, you can't plug hard drives into them, they're too bulky and have tiny screen size.

It looks like an old, comfortable family home, not a pretence of a different era.

BitchTradeMark · 29/12/2014 19:00

Older person, likely female. Give aways are - carpet in the kitchen (who does that??), the weird bear on the wall next to the kitchen window holding an electronic thingymajiggy; medicine/supplements on kitchen worktop: the box TVs are old; dolls on the rocking chair in picture 6; no presence of a computer/laptop. Young hipsters would likely have a modern work space set up.

The thing that strikes me the most is lack of family, or people, photos so I would say an older lady who didn't have children.

Somethingtodo · 29/12/2014 20:12

I want:
The metallic wallpaper in the bathroom - and the quirky hand painted tiles.
The purple carpet, orange wallpaper and blue/grey ceiling in lounge - what a striking combination.
Pendant lights in lounge.
Leather recliner and foot stool.
Red faded (silk?) wallpaper in dining room.
Wall hung six drawer unit and red sofa in attic bedroom.
Sludge/pink/yellow floral wallpaper in other attic bedroom.

Think these are cute:
Encyclopedia Britannica on low LHS book shelf in dining room.
Cafe style glass salt and pepper cruet left out on dining table.
Trolley with bowls of fruit? nic nacs? in 2nd lounge
Cassettes - lots in x3 holders to RHS of kitchen hatch
Wine glasses randomly placed (poised for action) in kitchen
Bath salts in jar or side of bath
Big collection of ceramics

I Defo think its a hipster, it's all too well done for an old granny. I love it too, I go to a lot of retro second hand home shops and this is all in, it's fab.

HollyBdenum · 29/12/2014 20:24

I don't think she was an old granny when she decorated, just that she kept things the same after she got her house right.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 29/12/2014 21:08

Have a look at picture 6 and tell me that was done by a hipster. Holey bedspread and wrinkly carpet...? I don't think so!

TalkinPeace · 29/12/2014 21:13

It WAS NOT DONE BY AN OLD LADY

it was done by a very trendy thirty something

but they did it 40 years ago

same as my Mum's house screams 1970's - because that is when the rooms were designed and she has never changed them

2015 · 29/12/2014 21:18

My MIL hasn't changed a thing in my DHs childhood bedroom since he moved out 35 years ago. It's not quite as hip as the house in the listing but it's a similar style.

I redecorate my DCs rooms within a year of them moving out to go to Uni. I'm a meanie aren't i. Blush

Phoenixfrights · 29/12/2014 21:21

I think Somethingtodo has it with her description of the original hipster. This is the house of someone who has lived and seen the world, going by the artworks on the walls. And possibly worked for Liberty at some point in the 1970s Grin

Valsoldknickers · 29/12/2014 21:40

DoesntLeftOver I blew up the pics on my phone and I take your point completely. The carpet is wrecked and the hole in the bedspread is a step too far!

Fickle me , I've changed my mind. It was an elderly person who got lighting advice from a hipster offspring!?

marne2 · 29/12/2014 21:46

I like the living room and some parts of the kitchen, the bedroom wall paper would have to go and the bathroom.

HolgerDanske · 29/12/2014 21:53

I love it. The only thing I'd change, barring the odd minor adjustment, is the bathroom.

Somethingtodo · 30/12/2014 00:27

It is quite something though, if, 50 years after you decorated your house - 90 odd random people were fascinated, moved, inspired by it....!!

Wouldn't you like to rummage through a wardrobe and make up box of someone from 50 years ago?! I would!

Blu · 30/12/2014 00:41

My grandparents had the curtain material in pic 3.

The kitchen has a bare fluorescent light strip.

Old / original: intellectuals, woman and man.

Blu · 30/12/2014 00:44

Possibly that front room is the work of gay men.

BlueBrightBlue · 30/12/2014 00:47

I love it too. Looks like the previous owner had a mind of their own and not paid someone to make it look cool.

emeline · 30/12/2014 00:52

Blue lol@your 'gay' observation... Went and had another look and yy!

Xmas Smile
Somethingtodo · 30/12/2014 02:04

No - I doubt it was old male gay couple - def female - too many nic nacs and fancy crockery...a local PP mentioned she had seen the old couple who had lived there - she didnt mention they were male?

What is on the kitchen ceiling next to the flouro strip light?
