I am Scots but lived down Sth since I was a teenager. DH and I love Edinburgh and are really thinking about moving North.

Please give me your good and bad points about uprooting and moving from East Anglia to Edinburgh.

Thank you all lots of food for thought. Would still like re commendations for great areas. Our budget is up to £600. Or you can just join me in Rightmove porn. We did find a castle for £1.3 mil but that's a bit out our budget. Grin

Try the espc rather than Rightmove.

Love Stockbridge. But I think we are thinking outside the city to maximise our budget. Especially as it's so easy to get into Edinburgh.

The traffic is not a massive issue. We lived in E London before moving to the sticks so getting about Edinburgh In traffic is fairly easy.

What's the aircraft noise like in Cramond?

lotsofcheese · 11/11/2014 11:25

There can be aircraft noise in Cramond, mostly incoming, but also outgoing, depending on the direction of the wind.

Barnton, Blackhall, Davidson's Mains & Cammo might be worth a thought. They are all Royal High catchment, as are all the primary schools.

I can't remember the name Of the high school at Morningside, I think it's better than Royal High. And Balerno has a good reputation.

If you look at the Edinburgh.gov.uk website, it has school catchments maps.

MorrisZapp · 11/11/2014 11:38

600k? You lucky wee shite :) The city is yours at that price. One word: Morningside. We live there, but in a flat. It's the best part of Edinburgh and by extension, the world. We have a waitrose, marks and spencers food, countless adorable shops and cafes, great schools (free if you live here, the law states you get a place) and wonderful outdoor stuff on our doorstep.

It cannot be beaten. Stockbridge is cute too but do you really want to have to walk up a steep hill into town? Also more full of New Town poshos with braying voices (no disrespect if you are one, equal rights for poshos etc but just not my own scene).

Good luck, and lucky you!

lotsofcheese · 11/11/2014 11:48

I'd be in Morningside too, if I had the money!

600k will get you something very nice.

Also look at s1 homes, Rettie's, Strutt & Parker etc

PrimalLass · 11/11/2014 12:08

The aircraft noise is quite bad in Cramond, and also in Cammo. For that budget I would go for Stockbridge or Morningside. We lived in Barnton and there is nothing there (very boring).

JamInMyWellies · 11/11/2014 16:46

I love Morningside but you would be surprised 600 doesnt get you very much! I have ordered the Edinburgh & Lothian good school guide to give us an idea on schools.

Any Fife people out there? Its where I am from and there are some amazing properties in Aberdour, Burntisland. What are the schools like?

OP posts:
PrimalLass · 11/11/2014 17:02

Good primaries, so-so secondaries. PM me if you like - we are in Aberdour.

cannaethink · 11/11/2014 18:13

Eskbank and Lasswade in Midlothian are both quite nice. Both have good primary schools. Eskbank will have a station on the new borders railway route which opens next year.
I was a morningsider from birth to mid twenties but I'm not such a fan now, it's much too posh for me! It does have good cafés though, which is something midlothian lacks.
Portobello nice too!

Rockdoctor · 12/11/2014 09:21

OK - can't resist joining in. We have been contemplating this move for about 12 months but have put it off for various reasons - currently trouble selling our house and the job security issues that have been mentioned upthread. You'll see me popping up on similar threads from the past.

We are looking at a similar budget and agree that it doesn't get us enough in the City, despite what people say. We are also looking at Aberdour (also Dunfermline, Stirling), which are areas we've visited and researched. I'm also wondering about the new train link to the south but that isn't an area we've visited. I'll be interested to see where the thread goes. I may PM you PrimalLass as we love Aberdour although I'm a bit worried about being "incomers" there compared to a larger town or city.

PrimalLass · 12/11/2014 10:42

Almost everyone here is an "incomer" Grin I only know a couple of people who grew up here.

JamInMyWellies · 12/11/2014 18:46

Oh Rockdoctor that is interesting. We really are determined to make it work.

Will be back later. Suicide hr beckons. Anyone want to bathe my 3ds?

preggersbycheggers · 19/11/2014 07:16

I used to live in Aberdour. In fact my old neighbour has their house on the market on a lovely road which leads down to the beach.
Living in Fife is quite different to living in Edinburgh though. Much more of a country lifestyle. The train service can be unreliable we found.

Rockdoctor · 19/11/2014 12:47

I'm currently perusing every house that is for sale in Aberdour - especially the one on the beach! Just not sure we could make it work.

JamInMyWellies · 19/11/2014 14:03

Haha I think I have looked at the beach one too. Is that the one with the custard cream cushion in the bay window?

Peedie · 19/11/2014 14:05

I'm just back from meeting a friend in Aberdour this morning for a stroll along the coastal path then coffee at the beach cafe. It was lovely! Preggers I was looking at that house as I drove down - how handy for the school, just put them over the road and that's the school run done!

Rockdoctor that house at the beach is amazing but does it have off-street parking? Parking is murder down there, especially in the summer!

PrimalLass · 19/11/2014 16:31

That house is owned by the same people who have the cafe on the high street (McTaggarts). They won't mind me saying that as they put it on the cafe Facebook page.

preggersbycheggers · 19/11/2014 20:23

It is Primal. J&L. Lovely lovely people. Very very handy for the school. The view from the upstairs window is gorgeous. The house next door where we lived had a brilliant log burner in it. Ahhhh memories!

PrimalLass · 19/11/2014 21:30

They are lovely indeed. And make a damn fine gingerbread latte.

PrimalLass · 19/11/2014 21:33

Rockdoctor if you mean the one on the shore - it's amazing. That beach doesn't get nearly as busy because it isn't signposted (local secret)

JamInMyWellies · 23/11/2014 10:47

Love that house in aberdour. But it looks like it has no parking or a garage??

So we are going to fly up to edinburgh and go look at s few houses inc the Aberdour one. Check out some schools too. So exciting. We have figured out DH flying up and down and accommodation is actually almost as cheap as his train fare daily from where we are now! And he can work 3 days in Londin and 2 remit key so perfect as he is away way more than that niw.

OP posts:
GrouchyKiwi · 23/11/2014 10:57

If you don't mind living outside the city then you could try Dunbar or the villages close by. You'd get something lovely for your budget, there's a train station and it's about 40 minutes to the city centre by road.

We're thinking about East Lothian when we move from our current flat in the city.
