Am looking to relocate from Brighton to Dorset. Looking for a sea view location with spectacular walks along the Jurassic coast. Anywhere spring to mind ? Thank you !

Along the coast East to West:

Swanage - near civilisation
Osmington - need a car
Sidmouth - close to great market town (Bridport)

Truelymadlysleepy · 06/10/2014 19:11

West Bexington
Bridport
Burton Bradstock

inland, Powerstock

BikeRunSki · 06/10/2014 19:27

Burton Bradstock
The beach/cafe/coast walk are some of my favorites in the world. Shame I live in West Yorkshire !

TalkinPeace · 06/10/2014 20:56

another vote for Burton Bradstock
the Hive cafe, the Anchor Inn and walking distance to the Riverside at West Bay
what's not to love

Branleuse · 06/10/2014 20:58

swanage

Iwillorderthefood · 06/10/2014 21:01

Just take care of flooding in Burtin Bradstock. It's a beautiful place, have spent some lovely times there.

Thank you everyone certainly food for thought will go on a road trip !

Sidmouth.

StripyBanana · 06/10/2014 22:55

Lyme Regis
Bridport
Burton Bradstock
Purbecks....

IHeartKingThistle · 06/10/2014 23:01

Lyme Regis is not quiet! Lovely though.

StripyBanana · 06/10/2014 23:13

Depends what you're comparing it too. I find it quiet :) Love the place.

StripyBanana · 06/10/2014 23:14

I guess I don't tend to go in the center in peak tourist season. My family have a house overlooking the sea, and we walk from there, and not nec into the centre!

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 06/10/2014 23:15

Osmington Village, if only for The Smugglers pub down in the cove.

StripyBanana · 06/10/2014 23:16

Charmouth...

I think you need to drive along the coast and visit every village :)

Sunnyshores · 07/10/2014 16:16

If your talking quaint, small villages then yes any of the above are beautiful (apart from Swanage which I dont like at all). If you need a bit more life and some shops then somewhere nearer Bridport/Dorchester would suit better. If you need more life than that, perhaps Wareham/Pool would suit better.

I'm trying not to let childhood and reputations put me off....so I'll add that Portland has some amazing scenery and is cheaper than the more traditional country villages.

StripyBanana · 07/10/2014 16:43

Portland's a bit... different ... though isn't it?

hereandtherex · 07/10/2014 16:55

Is 'different' the polically-correct word for a bunch of half-brained, unemployable in-breeds?

Portland is one of places I've been to which makes Middlesbrough look good.

TalkinPeace · 07/10/2014 16:57

Portland is .... yes well, I suspect its not on Op's radar

Charmouth is OK but the beach is usually filthy with debris
West Bay is amusing and within walking distance of Bridport
many of the slightly inland villages round there are walking distance to the sea

the other area to consider is Abbotsbury and then along towards Corfe Castle

StripyBanana · 07/10/2014 17:00

Ooh yes there are some beautiful houses around abbotsbury and it's surrounds.

AntiDistinctlyMinty · 07/10/2014 17:07

I grew up on Portland. It's a fucking mad-house! We had to move there for Dad's job and even after 20 years we were still 'outsiders'. Also, DSis and I were the only people at my school not related to everyone else Grin

Great for a visit, OP, but I'll second PP - don't even consider it.

Abbostbury is lovely, as is Osmington. Wherever you go though, check out the flooding issues; not just in the villages themselves but the access roads. It's very easy to be totally cut off by flood water in a completely dry village in Dorset!

toastedteacake · 07/10/2014 21:45

Sunnyshores if you dismiss Swanage why would you promote Poole which forms part of an urban conurbation similar to Brighton and Hove?

The OP is looking for coastal walks and countryside not traffic jams and an old Arndale Centre.

SuzySheepSmellsNice · 07/10/2014 21:47

PMSL at comments about Portland! Poole is lovely ;)

knickernicker · 07/10/2014 21:50

Burton Bradstock. My aunt lives there. I'm so happy when I'm there.

SuzySheepSmellsNice · 07/10/2014 21:50

Swanage is too Portland-esque, very expensive. Poole and the surrounding area is nice because it's close enough to the real bumpkin-land areas for quaint walks, but still lively and modern

toastedteacake · 08/10/2014 10:27

I think you're being a bit harsh about Swanage as there are two routes of 'escape' by road. On Portland there's only one road off the island. Wink

I guess because of its location on the Purbeck peninsular Swanage could be seen as insular but ask around and you may be surprised about people's origins/ allegiances. They're not all dairy farmers, quarrymen and fishermen with centuries old local histories you know. There has always been pockets of 'arty types' and 'actors dahling' at Durlston and around Acton/ Langton Matravers.

Perhaps I should say no more and keep this seaside gem a secret.
