Am looking to relocate from Brighton to Dorset. Looking for a sea view location with spectacular walks along the Jurassic coast. Anywhere spring to mind ? Thank you !

IMHO Swanage is the place to be.

It is a picturesque town with lovely coastal walks (Durlston Country Park is the gateway to the Jurassic Coast) that has all the required amenities despite its small size (supermarket, good schools, doctors surgery etc.).

House prices are reasonable if considered in the context of Swanage's proximity to hugely expensive Sandbanks as well as beautiful surroundings that include Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door, Corfe Castle and Studland beach which are all only a short drive away.

Also Swanage is not too isolated from the 'real world' as Bournemouth, Poole, Southampton and Portsmouth are all within commuting distance and London is only around 2-3 hours drive away (however traffic can be horrendous, especially during the summer and bank holiday periods).

I have only just seen what toasted posted and can endorse everything she says about the people living there.

Sunnyshores · 08/10/2014 12:58

toastedteacake You have misunderstood my post, I was suggesting Poole surrounds (ie Wareham) as somewhere if OP wanted something more lively than a picture perfect Dorset village like Burton Bradstock or Abbotsbury. Certainly wasnt suggesting Poole Town centre as a place for picturesque walks!

toastedteacake · 08/10/2014 13:24

Sunnyshores - I wouldn't say Wareham is 'Poole surrounds'. It is distinct.

Also, although Wareham has great views of the Purbecks and a lovely quayside by the river Frome, it does not have sea views or coastal walks which is what the OP was asking about.

Sunnyshores · 08/10/2014 14:27

Well then I apologise to your obviously vastly superior knowledge.

Parsley1234 · 08/10/2014 19:29

Thank you lovely people! It's actually for a friend and myself he is a very flamboyant character think Paul ogrady meets graham norton looking like a Swedish model not your normal type. So needs to be fairly cool and aesthetic with good food but close to walks saw a few apartments in swan age overlooking sea but winter let only we are looking for long ! Thank you all xxx

Weymouth Quay?

Truelymadlysleepy · 08/10/2014 19:55

I'd definitely look at Bridport.

StripyBanana · 08/10/2014 19:58

Boscome seafront?

toastedteacake · 08/10/2014 20:03

Stripy banana - yes, when the OP said flamboyant my thoughts immediately went to Bournemouth/ Boscombe. Much livelier, but seafront rents will be extortionate won't they?

Pantah630 · 09/10/2014 13:48

Given your update OP, he needs to hang out at Cafe Shore and Aruba with my cousin. How about Westbourne/Penn Hill for living near civilisation then a quick cycle, drive, longer walk to ferry and you're in the Purbecks.

Pantah630 · 09/10/2014 13:49

You can get long term sea view apartments on both East and Westciffe in Bournemouth.

ChaosK · 09/10/2014 15:21

In the name of all things Holy - don't move to Boscombe. Bournemouth - yes (in places), Poole - No. Purbecks and west - absolutely yes (apart from Portland - comments from Hereandtherex are spot on!)

StripyBanana · 09/10/2014 15:47

Ooh yes, I lived in an appartment in Westbourne for a while. Walking disntance of the beach (not sea view but close by) but also of some civilization too.

Lots of lovely areas within Poole (Sandbanks if he's loaded!?), Canford Cliffs, Broadstone, Penn Hill (not exactly seaview though...)

Pantah630 · 09/10/2014 16:53

Boscombe is wet and miserable today, I work here, according to some it's a vibrant mix of people and a cultural centre......according to those that live/work here it's a shithole full of people you wouldn't want as neighbours.

Pantah630 · 09/10/2014 16:54

I always feel sorry for Boscombe up on Salisbury Plain, they must get fed up with having to say "not that Boscombe" Grin

StripyBanana · 09/10/2014 17:00

It's a bit of a mix though isn't it? I've always avoided the whole Boscome thing but know some rather well off types that live near the beach in Southbourne. Admittedly they refer to it as "Bournemouth" and not "boscombe"....

Pantah630 · 09/10/2014 17:12

Southbourne isn't Boscombe though and Boscombe Manor has some great big Edwardian Gentlemens Residences. They've regenerated the overstrand, with quirky, vvvv expensive flats and beach pods but done nothing for the town centre and surroundings where the problems are. The Cresent has had a refurb as well but that was never really the problem, just the visible evidence to those passing through. :( it's very trendy these days to say Boscombe is fab, it is if you're just popping in to Boscanova or Crooked Book for tea and literature but not day in, day out.

Sorry OP don't mean to derail your thread. Dorset is fab, I'm born and bred, personally I'd like a cottage in the Purbecks but realistically I've got Christchurch, with countryside and town on my doorstep. until our Euro syndicate pays up on Friday, then I'm off to buy the Encombe Estate Grin

StripyBanana · 09/10/2014 17:19

Ah thanks for the diversion - I don't know Boscome that well. As an outsider I knew the crescent area had its problems, and knew the bit near the beach was being billed as trendy.

Cottage in the purbecks would be rather lovely I agree :)

I don't know Christchurch that well, but keep meaning to come and go on one of the boats on the river and love hengistbury across the water.
