Stacking tumble dryer on top of washing machine

Dear collective,
I'm just about to complete on a house with a utility where the washing machine is under a worksurface next to a sink. We unfortunately really need a tumble dryer (don't use it often but with small DC it's unavoidable)
Is it reasonable to stack the tumble dryer on top of the washing machine? If so do I need a special housing unit? Can I just remove the worksurface and stack the tumble dryer on top of the washing machine?
Thanks
For variou

(No idea where the text on the end of that appeared from!)

You can buy special stacking kits designed to fit both. But you can actually leave the worktop in place and just stack the tumble dryer on top of it if your setup is how I picture it. I wouldn't set them directly on top of each other because it might be unstable when the washer is on spin.

Our tumble drier stands directly on top of the washer. We have had this set up for many years.
Check that your washing machine is really level (adjust the feet if necessary) so that there is no vibration.

PurpleWithRed · 03/10/2014 08:56

We stack ours directly on top, but I don't think it's advised. If you are buying new get a stacking kit.

NotMrsTumble · 03/10/2014 08:57

Easiest way is to leave worktop in place, assuming it is adequately supported. I have heavy condenser drier on top of washing machine in our under stair space, and constructed a table over the washing machine from ikea legs and worktop, to stop any issues re movement from the washing machine.

OverWorkedAndAggrieved · 03/10/2014 09:18

I've done this in the past too - with work top and tumble on top!

Bonsoir · 03/10/2014 09:28

I have a tumble dryer stacked on a washing machine with a stacking kit. It's very practical (much more so than side by side).

PigletJohn · 03/10/2014 09:31

The stacking kit prevents the drier falling off. Bosch (and presumably others) do a kit that they say fits all their washers and all their driers. You can also get universal kits from places that sell appliances.

The washer always goes underneath because it is heavy.

PrimalLass · 03/10/2014 12:40

I would just stick it on the worktop.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 03/10/2014 12:43

mu mum and dads utility 'area' is a large hallway between the house, loo /shower room and the garage. They have what I think you are describing. The washing machine is underneath and the condenser dryer sits on top of a work surface, this has three metal legs (might jut be two on the open side). My mum says it makes it much easier for emptying the condenser as well as not so low down. She did have a normal vented dryer there previously, but it steamed the room up too much.

MillyMollyMama · 03/10/2014 13:21

I have a housing for dryer above. Mine is a condenser but is plumbed in so the water goes down the drain. It is a Miele and it is very heavy. I would never have it just on the work surface as it does actually move a bit! A stacking kit might be ok but I have a cupboard above the housing and it is just like an oven housing but made for a washer below and dryer above with a cupboard above that. I think this works very well and I have a drying rail on the wall opposite.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 03/10/2014 13:28

I used to have a proper stacking housing & it meant the whole thing swayed quite alarmingly when the washer had an uneven spin. Also they have to be the same make (I think) which is ok if they are atm, but ties you to that brand forever unless you replace both at the same time

I would just put the dryer on the work surface as others have said. I have a dryer on a plain wooden shelf above the washer & it doesn't move at all - it doesn't seem to have wheels? If you're worried about yours moving you could possibly attach a length of wood across the front so it can't fall off

Hughfearnley · 03/10/2014 13:47

Great! I'm liking the "on the worksurface option" as it seems to be no/minimal hassle for us!
I was going to get a vented dryer but after some of the comments on here perhaps I should consider a condenser. We're buying new as we've been in rental accomm for a year now trying to buy somewhere!

If you have a window or a wall you can put a vent then a normal vented will be fine. My parents issue was that all 4 walls backed into other rooms so nowhere for ventilation.

Eastpoint · 03/10/2014 14:37

I have a Miele combined with a condenser drier and the drying function is close to useless - vented is so much better & quicker.

PlasticPinkFlamingo · 03/10/2014 14:44

We're doing this when our kitchen gets done. I've got a Samsung washer and AEG dryer and I'm really hoping they can be stacked on top of one another with one of those kits.

Our dryer is a condenser one and works well. There's no way we could have a vented dryer so it's the best alternative.

QuintessentiallyQS · 03/10/2014 14:49

Make sure you buy appliances that are meant to stack on top of eachother. If the tumble drier is a couple of mm wider/deeper than the washing machine, it wont be steady, and it may come crashing down.... (I speak from experience) If so, no stacking tray or unit will help, just make it more wobbly (as explained by the washing machine repair man who came out after I had wedged myself up against the machines trying to keep the tumble drier on top while the washing machine went through a spin cycle. - Nightmare)

ooerrmissus · 03/10/2014 14:50

I've got mine stacked with a stacking kit thingy- they don't have to be the same make. I've got a Smeg washer and a miele dryer. I got a miele stacking kit and it works fine.

MummytoMog · 03/10/2014 18:24

I have a Hoover washing machine and Bosch t dryer. Made my own stacking kit - anti vibration feet for washer, anti vibration mat in between washer and dryer and a big ratchet strap holding them together. Was cheap and works fine.

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 03/10/2014 19:45

We were in your position when we moved into our house. Washing machine spacec was under an (ancient) worktop in the utility room. We just bunged our condenser dryer on the worktop.

Its been there several years now, and so far so good.

FastWindow · 03/10/2014 19:46

I remember this from my childhood. Tumble dryer on top. Sure there was a plank in between though.

Pipbin · 03/10/2014 19:49

I have my tumble dryer directly on top of my washing machine and it's been fine so far.

lilyruin · 03/10/2014 19:51

Washer dryer?

MyFirstName · 03/10/2014 19:54

I have the worktop in between thing. Is fine..

minipie · 03/10/2014 20:07

our tumble dryer is directly on top of washing machine, fine so far. We have a rubbery mat in between which helps reduce vibrations and movement .

that said, we don't use the dryer much, so not sure if there might be a problem if we used it more.
