Advice please on moving back to Cornwall

Hi. I grew up in cornwall but moved away when I was in my late teens. Now I have two little boys we have decided to go back (fantastic place to grow up and have lots of family there) but can't decide where. Would like a small town/ large village with school and couple of shops but within a few miles of Truro. Can anyone offer any advice or help as it's beginning to make me go slightly mad with looking as don't know that part of Cornwall that well.

Not soo close to Turo, (10 miles - 20 minutes) but Constantine is a great village for young families. Good school, close to Falmouth and lovely Lizard beaches too. Loads going on, but peaceful and lovely in beautiful countryside - the kids are all on the beach at Helford Passage, before and after school all summer.

Evening, I'm in Falmouth and love it here! It is bigger than Truro though so probably not what you're looking for Grin.

Whereabouts in Truro do you want to be near (eg Treliske hospital/Truro College/train station/city centre) as that might narrow down villages?

mothermirth · 26/09/2014 19:26

Personally I'd go for Penzance --and hope to within the next few years––, although that's probably not what you want to hear either.

Hope you find what you're looking for Smile

Hi!
I'm in a similar position. I moved away from Plymouth, Devon to Norwich, Norfolk at 18 (due to uni) met hubby at 21 so stayed. Now with 2 kiddies we decided we want them to grow up in the south west. DH wanted to move to Cornwall but we've decided that we wanted to be closer to the M5 as jobs etc are limiting the further down in the south west you go. Although we are relocating with DH work and it's allowed us the flexibility as he works from home we worry if he lost his job we would be stuck! Plus when the kids are older we want them to have more flexibility in university's and work. We are now in the process of buying near crediton (about 14 miles from Exeter) this way we are only an hour from family and 25 mins from Exeter and M5.
Obviously this is what is best for us. Do you still have family in Cornwall?maybe try and fit your search area near them and Truro... I decided I need an hour between us as after13 years of 360 mikes between us we need our space too.
I would also suggest a good drive around the areas. We did this too. We were very much driven by houses available to buy and then checking out schools etc. Talking to locals at the village parks gave us a good insight too.

Good luck
Xx

DevonshireDaisy · 26/09/2014 21:54

Also meant to add that we are moving to a village as we felt it was important to be in a smaller community so we find it easier to find friends etc and become included so we don't feel isolated and like outsiders. This is another reason we talked to people there xx

Thank you. There's somewhere just come up we are going to look at next week so fingers crossed. Falmouth is lovely and spent a lot of time there when I was little (have an auntie there). Looking on the St Austell side (another auntie in Polgooth) or below. Any views on Devoran as haven't been there and a couple of houses there!

Crediton is nice, we have friends there who love it we live other side of Exeter on the coast. The joy if the internet is you can nose up and down the street, check out the schools and find out what newspapers they read! Xx

Perranwell Station (5 miles out, halfway to Falmouth) is very nice, very "desirable" for want of a better term but has the prices you might expect as a result. It is at least on the railway line (clue is in the name..) regular buses, the school used to be very good 30 years ago but not sure what it is like now. Village shop still very nice by all accounts. Definite sense of community. Perran-ar-worthal is sort of merged with it and is the part nearer the A39 - the school is named Perran-ar-worthal too.

Similar direction but not on the trainline - Stithians is good as well. No idea on how good the school currently is either (assuming it is still there!) but I'm sure Ofsted has some answers.

Devoran is very pretty as it is next to the extremely tidal creek not that I have ever been caught out by that, oh no. It does have a doctor's surgery at least and is on the bus routes. No idea what it is like to live there though in terms of the people, and again not sure on the school.

I can't really tell you much more as most of what I know is quite probably 20 years out of date although my family are still down there and I visit once a year or so. It is indeed a wonderful place to grow up though Smile

BadRoly · 26/09/2014 22:05

I don't really know Devoran (other than to drive past) but has the reputation, from people I know, of being desirable - good primary school, catchment for Truro and expensive houses Wink

DevonshireDaisy · 26/09/2014 22:05

Good luck with looking at the house :)
Yes google earth is fab! Been up and down streets etc even worked out a lovely morning walk around the village with the dog :)
X

CrispyFB · 26/09/2014 22:10

I see you just asked about Devoran - x-post! Well, I can add to my previous post that 30 years ago it had the only shop in the area that sold rainbow dust (that fizzy sherbet crystals stuff in glass jars) and that when it got wet, the paper bags it was in fell to bits and the rainbow dust went everywhere. Sadly that shop has long since closed.. I presume there is a shop there somewhere, but there is a nice pub at least!

Tournee · 26/09/2014 22:11

Right I'll book a look at the house in Devoran too then and have a rightmove look at stithians aswell. Thank you so much everyone. Problem is I know Lostwithiel to st Austell really well but having lived near Exeter for a few years like the idea of near Truro but don't know that part of cornwall all that well. Thank you again.Smile

Where do your family live?

Villages around Truro:

Threemilestone is quiet, mid price range for renting but close enough to Truro for amenities, only a few minutes drive to Aldi/Tesco/Sainsburys. Not sure on schools but there are 2 nurseries close by and Richard Lander School. Same for Chacewater.

Trispen/St Erme is a few miles the other side of Truro. Popular with younger families, cheap to rent and an apparently lovely school. They have a post office and corner shop but that's about it. I used to with someone who lived there and he is one of the oldest living in the parish (his words). He's early 50's.

You've also got a large estate opposite Treliske called Gloweth and Chyvelah Ope which is close to shops, nurseries and major bus links to the city centre. Reasonable price but can be on the higher end due to popularity of doctors and consultants based in the hospital.

A new development has been built in Shortlanesend who have all you require and there is also the new development Higher Newham Farm which is soon due to go ahead for building. Not sure on dates for completion of Higher Newham Farm so you may best researching it. But it is apparently supposed to be a fantastic development.
