En suite bathrooms

My parents are planning an extension and wonder whether ensuite bathrooms for all bedros would be a big selling point. It looks like a lot of bathrooms on the plans(!) but what does anyone think? Please be forthcoming with thoughtful observations as I have boasted than MN will have the answer!

I prefer 1 or 2 ensuite and a family bathroom (with big bath) for kids. if this is to be marketed as a family house in future, then I think one bathroom with big bath is better than 2 tiny ensuite shower rooms.

poocatcherchampion · 12/08/2014 22:38

that's too many.
think of the cleaning! (that's what other mumsnetters would say. I don't clean!)

one for master and one for guest room and a family bathroom gets my vote.

Joyousthings · 12/08/2014 22:38

Agree with parietal but it also depends what the actual house is like. would it make the house be overpriced for area? If exoensive area then for some people each bedroom having decent en suite could be highly desirable.

Blueskies80 · 12/08/2014 22:59

We looked at a new build with three showers (marketed as a four bedded but was more like a three bedder) and I thought it was too many. No storage either so we were discussing ripping out a shower and replacing with a cupboard, ridiculous! Take a look at what's on in the same price bracket locally and see what they do but my instinct is that one bathroom and showr room is enough for a family house x

ShinyBlackTaxiCab · 13/08/2014 16:13

Thanks all. Good point about storage - and indeed cleaning all these bathrooms could start to become the major focus of their lives! Amused that someone with nn poo catcher champion is concerned about cleaning bathrooms!

I agree with the others one for master, nor for guest and then a family bathroom. That's the plan for our house when we extend.

BiggerYellowTaxi · 13/08/2014 16:17

One for guest not nor!

Marnierose · 13/08/2014 16:51

I really don't get the ensuite thing. It's nice to have one in the master but that wouldn't actually be a massive selling point for me.

A good family bathroom and downstairs cloakroom are essentials for me. As is good storage.

I certainly wouldn't pay more for en suites, if anything it would put me off.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 13/08/2014 16:57

Marnierose a master ensuite is a huge selling point for me. Agree with the post on one for master, one for guest, and one for family. That's the ideal number of bathrooms/shower rooms for me.

However, for rented houses for non-families, it's also quite common to have one ensuite per bedroom.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 13/08/2014 16:58

I think we all just like different things. For example a lack of bath won't be a problem for me. I've not had a bath since I was a child. Most houses I live in have baths. I just don't see a point for them at all. But I know it's a must have for many.

Madamecastafiore · 13/08/2014 16:59

3 of our bedrooms have them and for me it's a must, as the kids get bigger they spend more time in them and saves the fighting. Dd has the family bathroom to herself as she doesn't have an ensuite. As long as there is enough storage space and the bedrooms are still of a good size it would be a big selling point for me.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 13/08/2014 17:03

madamecastafiore I remember my brother being a shower hogger. He used to spend over an hour in the shower room! Luckily we have three bathrooms growing up. (One master ensuite, one family bathroom and one guest shower room). I guess I was basing that ideal number on a family of 2 adults 2 children. But in reality it's actually one bathroom per person except mum & dad!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 13/08/2014 19:25

You can't have enough bathrooms if you have teenagers. We have six people and three bathrooms in our house. Only two have showers though, we could really do with another shower.

RandomMess · 13/08/2014 19:32

If I was planning I would make a point of having a lovely bathroom that does not have a loo in it - why do people want to wash themselves etc in where someone has just had a poo!!

1 less bath/shower room than bedrooms.

Orangeanddemons · 13/08/2014 19:35

Well we managed fine with 3 teenagers, and one bathroom. They weren't allowed to hog the bathroom/shower

OneLittleToddleTerror · 13/08/2014 19:56

RandomMess we do that in NZ. The family bathroom doesn't have a loo in it. There's a separate loo, usually next to it. But then houses are much bigger. It's very sensible because then you can have one person pooing, while another showering.

We usually have the same number loos as shower/baths. Unlike in the UK, where the downstair toilet is just a toilet. (ie the equivalent downstair toilet would have a bathroom/shower room next to it).

burnishedsilver · 13/08/2014 20:59

It would really put me off. I've seen a few showhouses with 5 bathrooms, one for each bedroom and one stand alone. I'd hate all that cleaning. I think its a waste of space in a family home. It would be good in a b&b or a house with adult renters sharing.

burnishedsilver · 13/08/2014 21:00

...I should add a master ensuite would be a must for me, a second might be nice, any more would be a turn off.

MuscatBouschet · 13/08/2014 21:04

We looked round large houses with en-suites in rooms to be used for kids and it really put us off. Perhaps because our kids are still young so need supervising!

ShinyBlackTaxiCab · 13/08/2014 21:29

Ooh thank you - so many different opinions! And I was worried it would get no views. It seems there is no wrong or right answer though!

I have two teen DDs and we cope perfectly well with one tiny family bathroom.

I'd want to rip them out and turn them into wardrobe space, we are never have enough.

ShinyBlackTaxiCab · 13/08/2014 21:39

It seems the winning combination is likely to be master + ensuite, guest + ensuite, bedroom + ensuite for grandpa in case he comes to stay, family bathroom and one additional bedroom - also a shower room with loo downstairs. So five toilets, two baths, four showers, five sinks and two bidets. The salesman in the bathroom shop is going to be delirious with joy!

ShinyBlackTaxiCab · 13/08/2014 21:40

Elephants me too! I think they have gone slightly mad!

OP posts:
ElephantsNeverForgive · 13/08/2014 21:43

The DDs are quite happy to only shower every two or three days, when they are actually dirty, but they can't walk past a clothes shop and DD2 has a terrible cheap shoe problem.
