En suite bathrooms

My parents are planning an extension and wonder whether ensuite bathrooms for all bedros would be a big selling point. It looks like a lot of bathrooms on the plans(!) but what does anyone think? Please be forthcoming with thoughtful observations as I have boasted than MN will have the answer!

I suggested a walk in wardrobe that ran the whole length of the house but my dad gave me a look over the top of his bidet catalogue.

But if it's a 5 bed house I assume they will have enough storage. I would also have a cleaner so cleaning them wouldn't bother me. Agree with small kids and ensuites though. I am not comfortable with DD with her own bathroom. But she is 3yo.

I hate en-suites with toilets in them; going to the loo that close to where I sleep is A Bad Thing. When we did have a place with one DH was banned from using it.

WiggleGinger · 13/08/2014 21:55

Agreed one master, one guest, one family and a downstairs WC.

I agree Winnebago my DH often uses the ensuite for pooing & it drives me INSANE!!!!! Use the family bathroom for that, then neither me, nor guests have to endure it! Wink

MrsWinninago sadly my house now is so small the family bathroom loo is closer to my bed and bedroom than the ensuite in two houses I grew up in. When you have no space you haven't got that luxury.

In the first house where I grew up the bed is separated by a wardrobe and a fireplace from the ensuite. There is also a dresser and window between the bed and the ensuite. The second one you have to walk through a walk in wardrobe to get to the ensuite. Now I'm one thin plasterboard next to the family loo. I can hear people peeing. And my door is next to the family bathroom door. Unless I banish everyone to use the downstairs toilet.

ClashCityRocker · 13/08/2014 22:04

I'd rather have the space tbh.

Plus, my experience of letting DSS as a toddler have an en-suite means I would avoid if I had young children.

I'd maybe go en suite for the master and one bedroom, plus main bathroom.

How many bedrooms will there be in total?

Kerberos · 13/08/2014 22:27

Surely it depends mostly on what they want for their extension? They have to LIVE in it until time to sell - so they should go for what they'll find to suit their lifestyle until they do.

Of course if it's a development to sell -ignore this and go with the MN majority :)

ChishandFips33 · 13/08/2014 23:14

Oo good point about poos in master ensuites - is it ideal then not to have a loo in an ensuite master or would that put people off?

I don't like the idea of toilets in ensuite but then think its weird to get ready for bed and shat in the main bathroom then shower in the ensuite! Or do you only use the ensuite when you don't need a number 2

Op too many bathrooms for me but cleaning would be the primary consideration

OneLittleToddleTerror · 13/08/2014 23:16

Nah I would have a toilet in the ensuite. If your DH is going to do a stinky one ask him to go downstairs. It's handy when you want a wee!

RandomMess · 13/08/2014 23:16

I'm the same about having a loo in the en-suite, we're buying and redesigning a house if we have an en-suite DH will not be allowed to use the loo in it all!!!!!

OneLittleToddleTerror · 13/08/2014 23:21

It is not weird. We only have one family bathroom and a downstairs loo. I told DH to poo in the downstairs one in the morning because I don't want to smell his poo when showering. It is not just the ensuite that's the problem. It is the lack of space in UK houses. Ideally you want a separate loo from the shower or bathroom.

But then ideally you want more storage than any of the houses I have seen in the UK. I'm not rich enough to buy those in escape to the country. But back home, I grew up in a house with a large walk in cupboard both on the upstairs and downstairs landing. And a huge storage area under the house. The kitchen has a fill height pantry. And every bedroom has a built in wardrobe bigger than the one in my master bedroom now. Actually my childhood bedroom is bigger than my current master.

ChishandFips33 · 13/08/2014 23:23

So when decorating we need to be considering these types of pictures for the ensuite

Or maybe I'm the only one who doesn't want anyone pooing in the family bathroom in the morning!

OneLittleToddleTerror · 13/08/2014 23:24

Downstairs only please. I need a sign that says 'please poo here'

TinklyLittleLaugh · 13/08/2014 23:34

My teens are into their exercise and sport and shower everyday. I don't think every three days is enough for an active teenager.

I don't particularly feel having a few bathrooms means more cleaning; bathrooms that are only used by a couple of people don't get very grubby and only require a quick wipe down. Actually, this summer I have made the teens responsible for cleaning their own bathrooms.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 13/08/2014 23:52

I don't get showering everyday, even after trampolining for ages out doors DD2 isn't smelly.

Gym club in a stuffy building and lycra leotard is another matter entirely.

BackforGood · 14/08/2014 00:03

I think that's an excessive number of bathrooms and it would certainly put me off. I have 3 teens and we manage fine with 1 shower room and one bathroom + downstairs loo. Will there be enough space left in the bedrooms for things like desks as well as wardrobes, beds, etc? We looked at a house which would have been useless as a family home as the space had been taken with too many en-suites so there was no room in the bedrooms for anything other tha a bed and a single wardrobe. My teens have a LOT more they need to keep in their rooms, from guitars to equipment for other hobbies, plus, as mentioned before, space to work.
