Is there anything I can do to make this a 'family' bathroom? Picture included!

This is my bathroom; it is tiny! We have a shower over bath which I hate but dh won't consider getting rid of the bath as he enjoys soaking!

I would love a wet room, so just an open plan shower, loo and sink in there.

We have 1 dc and 1 on the way.

I don't think I'm missing any obvious solution but just in case I am!

I couldn't think of anything worse than a wet room with two children, especially when one will be a baby! Plus the loo gets wet when you have a shower - just the thought of all the mess irritates me.

Are you after suggestions of how to re-do it or just cheer it up?

Could you brighten it up with a blind, change of tiling, colourful accessories, new flooring? I hate shower screens as they never seem to be very efficient and can be a pain to clean. I'd have a curtain instead.

Lelivre · 10/06/2014 20:40

I thought I wanted a wet room until I stayed in a holiday let with one. It was awful constant wet floor around the loo. And a constant wet damp bathroom smell on approach. I can't explain that...sort of dank. I don't know if they work great in this country maybe in a hotter climate?

MoonlightandRoses · 10/06/2014 20:43

Agree about the wet room - it wouldn't be much fun with small children. What size is the room? If there's space, you could open it up a bit by moving the sink to the wall the door opens onto?

Also, again to change the visuals, go for a folding, rather than fixed shower screen so it can be pushed back when not in use (and it isn't so obvious when it's a bit grubby either...) Something like this.

I just would love the idea of a separate shower and bath and dream of a luxury bathroom!

The room is very small - sorry don't have the measurements but the photo is taken right at the edge of the door.

I never thought of the problems of a wet room to be honest!

I'm after suggestions on how I could redo it.

moon the door opens almost right against the toilet so there's no way of moving the sink.

Wall hung toilets and sinks can give the illusion of more space, as you see more floor. Can also get a storage thing made instead of having a bath panel, Google it And hopefully you will get what I mean.

JuniperTisane · 10/06/2014 20:55

Would you consider a shower bath with an excellent shower to make your preferred choice as lovely as possible? Then a sleek modern basin and loo?

Have a look at the Bathstore bathroom planner, you can play around with all sorts there

CoffeeChocolateWine · 10/06/2014 20:55

How about you get a toilet and sink unit...one with a bit of storage space under the sink and surface space on top. Something like this

And maybe look to have the shower fixed to the wall rather than just sitting on the bath?

EnlightenedOwl · 10/06/2014 20:56

It looks fine to me and mine isn't much bigger. Wet room would be awful you would have water everywhere and not great for a family.
If you want you could re-tile, get more light in but I wouldn't be spending a lot of money and water would be everywhere.
You could put a vanity unit in with an inset sink bowl on top that would look nice and give you a bit of storage space too

MisForMumNotMaid · 10/06/2014 20:56

If you have space outside the bathroom could you hinge the door outwards? If its possible this could open up space within the bathroom for a bit of storage.

Are you after a better/ bigger shower area then? Could a compact corner bath fit across where the sink and shower end currently are, then move the sink to the corner near the door.

EnlightenedOwl · 10/06/2014 20:59

I would also recommend the combined sink/ loo vanity unit. I have this and they look nice.

dottytablecloth · 10/06/2014 21:05

I really like the idea of the sink toilet combo.

Yes, I'm after a bigger and better shower area!

chipsandpeas · 10/06/2014 21:08

why dont you change the door so it opens outwards instead of inwards would give slightly more space

Lottiedoubtie · 10/06/2014 21:09

I can't help but your bathroom looks like a palace compared to mine Sad mines really shit...

dottytablecloth · 10/06/2014 21:11

That's a really good idea to change the way the door opens!

Any chance you could steal a little bit of space from an adjoining bedroom or storage cupboard?

If no then second pp's suggestion to get wall hung sink & toilet - my mum just did this & its made a huge difference to the amount of space in there. She also got one of those P shaped shower baths to maximise the shower space available.

Saltedcaramel2014 · 10/06/2014 21:21

Your bathroom is almost identical to ours and I've been wondering the same. One thing that really helps ours feel bigger is the door - previous owners fitted a wooden sliding one. So same idea as outward opening but it's kind of a nice feature in itself too

CoffeeChocolateWine · 10/06/2014 21:26

Very good idea to change the way the door opens if that's a possibility. Then get a nice full length mirror in there...that always makes a room look bigger.

We're in the process of having our bathroom redone and we've ordered a full length mirror to actually sit within the tiles rather than fixed onto the tiles. It's not in place yet but it's going to look awesome!

MisForMumNotMaid · 10/06/2014 21:27

I think that one of these then a built in vanity unit toilet and sink alongside could work.

I'd recommend a big heated towel rail behind where the door currently hinges too - great when you've got a families worth of towels to dry.

ImperialBlether · 10/06/2014 21:33

wowfudge you mention the problems of getting the shower screen really clean. I've been recommending this all day. It's the Flash eraser - I couldn't believe how quickly it cleaned the screen. I am NOT the kind of person who posts about cleaning products, believe me, but this was absolutely amazing.

Don't know what your house is like but with mine you have the option to nick a bit of space off the landing to take into the bathroom and give yourself a bit more room. I haven't done it myself but one of the neighbours has and it does make a difference.

dottytablecloth · 10/06/2014 21:39

You people are great! Some fabulous ideas!

I would refile it with white tiles. They would make the room look bigger and brighter
