Is there anything I can do to make this a 'family' bathroom? Picture included!

This is my bathroom; it is tiny! We have a shower over bath which I hate but dh won't consider getting rid of the bath as he enjoys soaking!

I would love a wet room, so just an open plan shower, loo and sink in there.

We have 1 dc and 1 on the way.

I don't think I'm missing any obvious solution but just in case I am!

Thanks Imperial - we don't actually have a shower screen anymore. I just hate them and find them pretty useless. We have a separate shower and bath these days

Openup41 · 10/06/2014 22:33

Our bathroom is roughly this size. It is however one of my most favourite rooms in the house. It has a lot of natural light and we have a seaside beach theme. I love being in there!

Tips:
Place pretty vase/flowers on the window ledge.
Replace the brown bin with a metal one
Replace cream tiles with white - will make bathroom look fresh and modern
Replace shower screen

It would be nice to inject some colour but I cannot think where. It does not look like you have wall space for a few canvas pictures.

Great thread. We're buying soon and the bathroom is really badly planned and doubles as a utility room so lots of great tips here.

I'd second the (decent) sliding door to the bathroom idea if you can. Definitely keep the bath with a small one on the way - plus a bath is handy for drying clothes on one of those airers that goes on top of a bath.

Our current bathroom is teeny - consider a smaller sink too. We can hardly squeeze past ours (rented home).

Princesspond · 10/06/2014 22:53

Your bathroom is v similar size to ours. I bought a space saver toilet it takes up less room (not as deep) so knees don't bang on the door anymore if it's open when you're on the loo. We bought a modern sink and unit (roper Rhodes ) with a cupboard to hide clutter away - on legs so you can see floor underneath (illusion of space) Would have got a wall hung one with pull out drawer but walls too crappy to support it. The thing that makes a big difference is a foldaway shower curtain thingy www.outasight-vb.com/over-bath-screen/ in chrome. No shower screen to bang against the sink.

Ah - you could do it if the door moved though? Or, but not the cheapest option, you could swing the loo around ninety degrees so you would see it side on, rather than front on, when opening the door.

Mind you, if you changed the door to outwards as suggested, and used the combo type, then you could move the whole thing to the currently unsuable wall and add the towel rail/radiator or full length mirror to the window wall.

'Combined sink and toilet units' are genius - some are tiny too - google images is your friend

Use words like compact tiny bathroom designs, L shaped shower baths etc and there's all sorts out there! Your bathroom is wider than mine:-/ so I have trawled the net sorting mine out

this sort of thing would leave you a bit more space for a shower/bath

Or a corner loo and sink unit for storage

Actually I think it's quite a good layout, better than mine. My toilet is where your sink is so you kind of get out of the bath onto it and the door opens onto the side of the bath. When my DS were little I always had to shut the door before they could get out. You could try a recessed roller blind and some mirrors and a folding screen or shower curtain will make it look bigger. Yes to small modern pedal bin too. Other than that if you start changing door hangings, if you come to sell the house it draws attention to it. I think it looks good as it is. (do you have another bathroom?)

burnishedsilver · 11/06/2014 07:48

I'd do the following..
swing the door to open into the hall.
move the sink and toilet to the wall on the right
have a vanity unit under the sink
have both the vanity and the goilet wall mounted.
get a shower bath as pictured above
fit a towel radiator above the toilet.

BornOfFrustration · 11/06/2014 08:06

We've got one of those L shaped bath's, there's loads of room in the shower bit now. Had to change the way the door opened to make it fit.

daisychicken · 11/06/2014 08:55

We have a "p" shaped bath (like first pic Chis posted), we put it in about 11years ago as the bathroom when we moved in had a tiny shower and we had a young baby. DH hates baths so this was the compromise. I have to say, it's worked really well. Instead of the curved screen, we did however have a shower curtain in a L shape (got the pole custom made but I think you can buy them now) as we found as the kids got older, they showered and the screen wasn't enough to stop the water going everywhere... but that might just be my kids(!)

The door - you could change direction of opening and side of opening (we did this) or if there is room in the hall, have a sliding door on the outside - plenty of options.

Toilet and sink - look at cloakroom versions which are slightly smaller. I'm put off the sink toilet combo as that means kids climbing on the loo seat to reach and my DS's have broken expensive soft close seats by climbing on them - they are not made to take weight - remember when you sit, some of the weight is on your feet!

Take measurements and your picture, visit several bathroom shops and look on pinterest as well. Lots of ideas out there, it's just finding the right one for you. I've just done this as our bathroom is a similar size, maybe a foot or so bigger each way and we are now putting in a massive shower as dc now 9/12 and never bath so we get our shower back Grin

Nocomet · 11/06/2014 09:05

Our bathroom is the size of a postage stamp. It was a PITA when DDs were small, but it's absolutely fine now they shower themselves.

Sidge · 11/06/2014 09:39

Change the door to a sliding door, or rehang so it opens out.

Get a shower-bath, they offer a much larger 'shower space' without a much larger footprint.

Have a wall hung (if the walls can take it) toilet and set the sink into a cabinet for storage. The space under a pedestal sink is just wasted.

Change the tiles for paler ones, white or off white, and set a large mirror into the opposite wall to reflect light. Keep flooring pale, and something like plain, non-patterned vinyl looks visually larger than tiles broken by grouting lines.

Use wall space to hang a heated towel rail; they don't have to run from the floor.

Some great tips here for dealing with small spaces!

We installed a P shaped bath in our old bathroom, but we got both a curved and straight screen to make it more enclosed (see pic). I hate draughty shower screens, but this was perfect. I was worried there would still be a draught from under the door, but that was never an issue. Best of both worlds when you don't have space for a bath and separate shower.

BTW, thanks Princesspond for that foldaway curtain recommendation above. That's perfect for our current bathroom which is rarely used for showering, and would finally allow me to install a ceiling airer as I wouldn't have a pesky shower rail in the way anymore.
