Why do you want to kill them? They're harmless and keep the flies down. Surely you don't want to fill the air with chemicals unnecessarily?

shggg245 · 13/05/2014 23:20

My friend told me to put conkers on all window sills and by the doors! Doesn't seem to keep the buggers out but I'm persevering. Anyone else heard of such a thing?

She could equally just be taking the piss!

bananananacoconuts · 13/05/2014 23:21

Spiders HAVE to go in a see through cup/glass to be distributed all over our village! Although i'm shit scared of them, it has to be me that catches them and puts them in someone else's garden because then i know it's definitely been done! Same goes for all things creepy and crawly!

get a cat?? works fab for me, but not a lazy fat housecat... get a semi feral hunting machine wildling.

Mitsi10 · 13/05/2014 23:21

Can't stand them I usually run when I see one but as I've moved out I can't do that lol xxx

I think you have to burn the house down.

eddiemairswife · 13/05/2014 23:32

If they are house spiders they don't come in from outside. Read Charlotte's Web, it gives you a completely different on spiders.

shggg245 · 13/05/2014 23:53

Yeah I'm not believing the conker theory, she's winding me up. I don't really hate spiders, admittedly not very keen but flies on the other hand are gross.

Had a too close encounter with a 50p size spider that was hiring in my dressing gown the other day, I'd just got out of the shower so was naked. I felt the tickle and then saw it drop to the floor! I mean that's just too much innit!

I have conkers in every window and they're not doing much for us, but I refuse to use chemicals and really don't want to kill them. what to do?

specialsubject · 14/05/2014 09:59

learn not to worry about what (in the UK) is a completely harmless creature?

AMumInScotland · 14/05/2014 10:04

I've found conkers effective - we've had loads less spiders in the house since we started putting conkers around. You need to get new ones every year as the 'smell' wears off over time (I assume the spiders smell them, not that I'm really conscious of it myself...)

You can get a spray which is basically 'essence of conkers' but apparently it is quite oily and brown so you'd have to be careful what you sprayed it onto.

burnishedsilver · 14/05/2014 10:09

2 years in Australia made me look differently at our puney spiders. I've lost all fear of them. They are totally harmless.

Without meaning to sound dismissive, addressing the fear would be a better long term solution than spraying the spiders.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 14/05/2014 10:14

We put conkers in the corners of the rooms. The spiders dont like some chemical/smell apparently, according to MIL (do spiders smell things?)

Otherbthan that, vacuuming more than once a week keeps the numbers down to a dull roar in our house.

gamerchick · 14/05/2014 10:16

You have to pierce the conkers..not an easy thing to do but have to anyway if you want to use it as a spider deterrent.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 14/05/2014 10:18

Be careful of spraying insecticides in your home, full of really nasty harmful chemicals. Do you want to be using that, releasing it into the atmisphere, and having a coating of it on everything you touch?

Also spiders eat flies remember. Kill all your spiders now and your place will be full of flies and baby flies in summer, flying through your open windows having just enjoyed dancing around on fresh dog poo.

Spidees are lovely really.

Impatientismymiddlename · 14/05/2014 10:18

There is no reason to fear spiders here in the UK. Humans are a lot bigger than spiders and the spiders are the ones that should be in fear.
Do not vacuum them as they will breed in your Hoover.
Do not use sprays as this is just adding chemicals into the air needlessly.
You will never get rid of spiders so you just have to learn to live with the fact that they exist and at some point you will see them in your house.

UriGeller · 14/05/2014 10:20

Theresa nice spray that keeps the spiders down. I think its essence of conkers or something. All natural and smells quite nice and herbal.

I got it from amazon, I also have the electronic bleepy thing. I hate them.

UriGeller · 14/05/2014 10:21

Theresa? There's a .

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 14/05/2014 10:21

A mixture of peppermint and lemon essential oil! Put a few drops in water in a spray bottle and spray around. Spiders hate it so it repells them, and it's non-toxic and smells good! Good luck!

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 14/05/2014 10:38

Unfortunately that also repels cats! (Mint and lemon)

Lagoonablue · 14/05/2014 19:36

Spiders are alright. Will eat flies and other creepiest that come in. Learn to live with them or become proficient at catching them in a glass and putting outside.

deepinthewoods · 15/05/2014 06:59

There are hundreds of spiders in every house- most of them you can't see. Harmless and eat other bugs. Live and let live.

Tabby1963 · 15/05/2014 08:17

Sadly, spiders actually live in houses rather than coming in from outside. I too fear them (it is totally unreasonable but seeing them move freaks me out badly). Over the years I have become more used to them (as long as they are still) by spending time watching them and observing them.

I don't have a fly problem and if any dare to come into my house I chase them with the hoover. Very effective.

I think the answer would be to learn not to fear them, OP. There are courses you can do apparently.

It is all very strange really because I don't have a problem with beetles or other insects, just the eight legged type. Confused
