I live with people affraid of spider so I checked this out before.
There was a scientific research project that confirmed the conker thing does NOT work, in fact some spider love them.
And so far, according to the research that I have read, there is no effective spider deterrent.

I agree Mrs Tara, there is no way of clearing your house of spiders. There will be several within a few feet of all of us- especially at this time of year.
It's best to overcome the fear.
UK spiders are not venemous, they can nip, but not dangerous.

except we do have some nasty spiders in the UK. You can get some big buggers as well when you're digging up floors and disturb the foundations.

Little house things are welcome in the house here.. they help with the ants nest under my living room.

What do you mean by "nasty spiders"?

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 15/05/2014 16:56

You know. The ones with low EQ.

Do not vacuum them as they will breed in your Hoover.

Shock

Get a cat. Our cats love eating them. Although they stalk the big ones for far too long while I stand on the table shrieking "kill it!"

I have been bitten by a native UK spider, I don't consder them nasty though, just wouldn't pick them up with my bare hands.

I am led to believe that they don't like Citrus, so wiped Citronella around door frames, on thresholds, and in various other places where I thought they may come in.

None (that I have seen) in the 5 years that I've been doing this for.....

I moved into my rented old house last summer and there were loads of spiders including some huge house spiders. I would say the amount peaked in about September. I got conkers and put them around the house and it did work but in the last month or so they've started coming back so maybe the smell has worn off or something. I have a spider catcher from Amazon which is like a grabber thing you grab them with and throw them outside.

UK house spiders are so tiny. My grandmothers house in the tropics has giant spiders as large as my head.

samsam123 · 17/05/2014 21:19

don't kill them they aren't going to attack you are they feel good about giving them a home for a while
