How much would a primrose bathroom suite devalue my house??

We are going to put a new bathroom in our house this year (much needed) and I really fancy a primrose yellow one. I think I may have been inspired by Kirstie Horseplopp.... Anyway, I've thought for years that coloured suites would soon come back into fashion and they haven't - but won't that change? Maybe? How much would a yellow suite put you off a house?

Yes I could spend a fortune redoing the room, but it all works and we have no ensuite or other shower so it would be an utter pain.

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 12/03/2014 12:37

If I liked your house I'd knock 2k off asking price to replace the suite with white.

enriquetheringbearinglizard · 12/03/2014 12:48

I think you've asked the wrong questions of the thread really emsy, you ask how much the suite of your choice might devalue your house and if it would put other people off buying the house? so those were the answers I gave.

If you're not planning on moving and are replacing the suite anyway then have what you want and cross the other bridges if and when.
Incidentally, what do the other people in the house think? are they all as keen on a coloured suite as you are?
As others have said, prospective buyers might possibly be ok with a coloured suite (long shot IMO as I'm 100% convinced they won't be a mainstream fashion choice again) but they won't necessarily agree with your choice of yellow.

Incidentally we spent a small fortune on our bathroom, but to put it into perspective of the location and size of the house we actually saved £4,000 on the lowest quote we had from bathroom companies. We bought all the fittings and tiles etc. from a plumbers' merchant (so glamorous) and paid a non VAT registered fitter to take out the old, put in underfloor heating, a new designer radiator, fit everything including two lots of cabinetry and tile. Then it was decorated.
Not a single one of the bathroom places we visited (a lot) had a coloured suite on show, they did have various choices available strictly to order, which you could see in catalogues, but they weren't a major option) I think they were still mostly white but with some colours introduced to the porcelain.

emsyj · 12/03/2014 17:57

Our bathroom is pretty small so I don't think it would cost that much to do - not criticising you for spending that at all though enrique, I'm sure it looks amazing and I know if you pay professionals to do stuff it will cost more. We would probably get FIL to do the work for mates' rates and buy the stuff from the trade counter.

In answer to a previous poster re: whether the period of the bathroom I want would fit - this is the original bathroom (not our house, a neighbour's house that is up for sale). So maybe I should aim for a black & white art deco theme...

I have found this thread quite helpful as I think I have a clearer idea of what I want now - I will probably go for a nod to art deco with a squareish large sink and the metro tiles. Like this but in white for the loo & sink and tiling (walls and floor) like this. Thoughts? I'm just not into the current 'modern' look of beige tiles like in a hotel.

emsyj · 12/03/2014 17:59

Oh, just to be clear - the bathroom in our house is not like the one in the neighbour's house, who still has the original! If it was, I would keep it. It's a vile Victoriana type affair with heavily tarnished cheap gold taps and weird terracotta kitchen tiles on the floor. Just awful.

I've been thinking coloured bathroom suites are long overdue for a comeback, but avoid very dark colours at all costs. They fade, and show up every tidemark and bit of soap scum. Just awful. We rented a villa in France a few years ago and it had a fantastic pink bathroom - I loved it.

enriquethewelshgoldringbearing · 12/03/2014 18:40

Emsy, I found you a bargain (new) basin and pedestal
Link Only problem is that it's not in a great location for you Grin

I do like the Art Deco style and it would compliment the style of house too. I think it's in Cote, the restaurant chain, that I really liked the Ladies when we visited. That's done out in white and black with green metro tiles. It looks very stylish and also quite French I think and it never dates. Apparently they're opening a Manchester branch in April OP so you could go and have a nose if they go for the same type of style - I'm not sure if they have a corporate style or if it depends on the particular venue.

I like the crosshead taps and the size of basin for this style is really practical too so long as you can fit it in the space.

By the way, if we'd have tried to do our own work it'd probably have cost shedloads more for professionals to come in and do remedial works after Blush

onthehill · 12/03/2014 18:58

I would pay extra Grin

gindrinker · 12/03/2014 19:46

It wouldn't put me off if it was well installed and executed.
Our current bathroom is pale grey, its not ideal but isn't offensive. We'll change it eventually.

I'd quite like a mint green and black bathroom.

emsyj · 12/03/2014 20:06

That is lovely enrique!!! Just the sort of thing I would like. With very square chrome taps. I am so glad I started this thread, it has helped me get straight in my own mind what I want - although I do love the idea of a yellow suite, I think I am going to go for a black & white theme.

I love mint green gindrinker - we got a sample of this tile for our kitchen and it was totally unsuitable to go with our chosen units but I always thought it would be gorgeous in a bathroom. I am tempted... We have the crackle glaze in white ('South Kensington' on the website) in the kitchen and I absolutely love them.

I am 101% convinced that coloured suites are going to be the Next Big Trendy Thing

Even if that were the case (and I'm in the 101% not convinced camp), you'll just end up with the equivalent of the beige hotel-style bathroom 5 years later. So, I'd say, pick coloured because you like it and for that reason only. As said, even if the next buyers did like a coloured suite, they might not like yellow.

emsyj · 12/03/2014 20:44

What about my latest plan SwedishEdith - to have a white art deco-ish style suite with black & white tiling?

OP posts:
SolomanDaisy · 12/03/2014 21:19

I was in a very cool restaurant today that had bright yellow sinks. I really liked them. I wouldn't fit it in my house (just had our bathroom redone and I didn't even consider it), but I'd be quite pleased to buy a house with one already fitted.

emsyj · 12/03/2014 21:22

All the yellow suite lovers are coming out of the woodwork now!!! Grin

OP posts:
SwedishEdith · 12/03/2014 21:34

Yes, like that. Had similar suite in my last house. Probably should have picked similar in this house (1920s) but had to make choices in a hurry.

MillyMollyMama · 12/03/2014 23:29

Just come back from Southern India. Loos of all the old colours in the shops there, yellow, blue , avocado, mint, pink! All horrible, but obviously bought in that part of the world as they are, presumably, cheap!

enriquethewelshgoldringbearing · 13/03/2014 10:19

MMM that must be where they all go to die Grin
For the record we've had to live with brown, ugh! peach, avocado and pink in the past. The bathroom we replaced was white, but we hated the fussy style of the sanitary ware and the tiles were vile, but we lived with it for 10 years before we changed it.

I love the green tiles they're very similar to the colour we have in our kitchen, which I didn't choose but which I like.
I'd go for the art deco style suite, black and white on the floor, white metro tiles on the walls and add either a top line of the green or the green dado border. If you like it that much though you could go for the green tile.
You can get a deco style bathroom mirror to compliment it all too.
I think it'd look very chic and fresh.

EasterHoliday · 13/03/2014 10:24

I stayed at Burgh Island once, and had the original turquoise art deco bathroom suite. Absolutely GORGEOUS, provided the whole thing is done in style. Are the images you posted of new suites in art deco style or are they the originals? I adore the curve at the end of those baths, and the depth of them - fantastic. Any reason you wouldn't put in a reclaimed original suite with new taps? (it would positively put me ON to a house.... may be influenced by the fact my parents had primrose yellow in their bathroom, probably original 30's)

emsyj · 13/03/2014 11:00

They are reclaimed Easter - I just have a 'thing' about bathrooms and toilets (comes from my DMum) I couldn't buy a used loo. I would consider a used bath, but would be worried the sanitary ware wouldn't match properly or that there would be signs of wear. HOWEVER - the company that makes the coloured suites to order would probably be able to make a repro one (for a no doubt eyewatering price). I am going to get a quote because I just love the rounded end bath, but suspect I will be too tight to pay the cost! I would pay up to £1k for the set of the bath, loo and sink - plus more for the shower and tiles etc.

OP posts:
EasterHoliday · 13/03/2014 11:02

wouldn't the old ones be re-enamelled anyway? (how do you cope with going to the loo in public places?! I have a colleague who has to wait until he gets home to poo)

emsyj · 13/03/2014 11:38

I don't know... I've seen a few baths with marks in etc so maybe not, or maybe you could pay extra for it?

I don't like public loos but I do poo when I need to! I would try to avoid a public loo if I could but sometimes it's just got to be done, and holding it in for me results in about 3 days of agony so I always do go - even on public loos - if needed. I would boil wee for hours though.

I don't want a second hand loo in my own house though. Call me old-fashioned! Grin

I'm inspired by this thread! This is going in the downstairs loo.

Shoop, I followed that link and quite fancied this

and then I scrolled down to the close ups of the tap Blush Shock

Shoopshoop2 · 13/03/2014 22:00

Haha! Gorgeous sink. The thing is,if you look at what you'd pay here,it's worth importing.

Nojustalurker · 16/03/2014 21:27

If it was a choose between a house I like with a white bathroom and one with a yellow bathroom or if I was in the position not wanting to work eg young children then I would pick the house with the white bathroom.
