How much would a primrose bathroom suite devalue my house??

We are going to put a new bathroom in our house this year (much needed) and I really fancy a primrose yellow one. I think I may have been inspired by Kirstie Horseplopp.... Anyway, I've thought for years that coloured suites would soon come back into fashion and they haven't - but won't that change? Maybe? How much would a yellow suite put you off a house?

I loved my primrose bathroom suite when we moved into our new home in 1978. We had a choice of primrose, blue, avocado or pink. Are these colours making a comeback?

Just come back to this.
Yes I do

Wednesbury · 11/03/2014 22:20

Don't know what happened there.
I do like 26

Shoopshoop2 · 11/03/2014 22:21

Here's your splash of primrose Grin

Avert your eyes

Wednesbury · 11/03/2014 22:22

But also the primrose. If you're going to be there a while I'd do what you like - if it's done well I think it will look good.

BrownSauceSandwich · 11/03/2014 22:32

We stayed in a hotel in France which had a bathroom suite strikingly similar to no 58, with diarrhoea brown floral tiles. DH thought it was ace. I counted the minutes until we could leave.

Get it if the pleasure it'll give you is worth the money. But even if coloured suites become all the rage, it's unlikely to be a selling point for your house. If you've got primrose yellow, they'll want pillarbox red, or avocado or something. White may be dull, but it's flexible.

motleymop · 11/03/2014 22:32

Yes, I was going to say those samples look like Tooty Frooties. What happened to those sweets, btw - were they discontinued?

ClownsLeftJokersRight · 11/03/2014 22:35

Wow Shoop those toilets are...Shockthere are no words reallyGrin

I ditched a 25 year old Whisper Grey suite last week. Bliss!

Have also had avocado (yuk).

Chose Almond (no4) in my new house in 1986. Downstairs loo was Midnight Blue - an absolute nightmare to clean - every water drip showed.

Friends had Chocolate brown with gold taps (very 1970s) and I've also seen a maroon suite.

Give me white every time. Change the bathroom accessories to change the colour.

£18k for a bathroom!!!! Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock

Crikey. We spent not much more than that on an extension and new kitchen last year. Our bathroom budget is probably closer to £4/6kish.

I think the one thing putting me off a coloured suite is that you can only get old-fashioned styles in those colours. They are obviously intended for people who have a coloured suite with a broken item that needs to be replaced - not for people like me who actually want a whole new coloured suite!

I am 101% convinced that coloured suites are going to be the Next Big Trendy Thing - and I'm really reluctant to get another white one when we re-do the bathroom, only for it to look really dated in 3 years. I think if I can find a style that I like, I will go for a colour. I will be buying new though - I couldn't bear a second hand loo!

Why are you bothered about the value of your house? Are you planning on selling it soon?

PrimalLass · 12/03/2014 10:36

I am 101% convinced that trend won't last long. I just think they are horrible, having ripped out a (newish) cream shell shaped suite, an avocado green suite, and a pale grey one.

I thing you will regret it, and it is a very expensive mistake to make.

GillTheGiraffe · 12/03/2014 10:40

I agree wih you Prima. Even if coloured suites did make a comeback and you did go for a coloured suite, the next occupant of your house may not like that colour. It's definitely something that would knock value off the house.

mistlethrush · 12/03/2014 10:44

We had an avocado one in our previous house - we changed the bathroom, but that still left the loo. We painted that YELLOW and it was so intense you didn't notice that the loo was avocado anymore Grin

I think I would go for a white suite with pale yellow and brighter yellow trimmings.

BuzzardBird · 12/03/2014 10:48

I have a mouthwash green suite if anyone wants one? It is truly foul with matching (really good quality actually) tiles, it is so foul it isn't even on that colour chart...think Listerine.

ISeeYouShiverWithAntici · 12/03/2014 10:51

ooh look, we can do pictures everywhere now! Grin

please please don't do this. It's a dreadful thing to do to a poor innocent bathroom.

Well the sort of ideas I had in mind are more ranging through from art deco style (with black & white tiles) right along to primrose yellow 50s styles like this...

I don't know when we will sell up to be honest. I don't like this house much, but it's in a nice location, it's big enough (although I'm sure we could spread out more if we had more space) - it just doesn't feel like home to me and it never has (been here 5 years). We would only move if we could afford a major step up the ladder, which we definitely won't be able to do for another 3-4 years, but then who knows? We might stay if we could decorate and make it more like my taste (with coloured suites a go-go!)

Does the period of the bathroom you want to put in, match the period of your house?

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 12/03/2014 12:02

Well my parents had one when I was growing up so in some ways it seems normal to me. I can always remember going into the bathroom after coming back from a holiday and it was always such a lovely bright place. I also have a pair of pale yellow sofas and my DD's room is yellow so I may not be the most impartial but I would LOVE IT!

noddyholder · 12/03/2014 12:17

I would love it

Nocomet · 12/03/2014 12:26

I wouldn't mind at all.

I don't mind our avacardo bathroom suite it's the flowery two shades of olive tiles I hate. They go right up to celling, great for a shower, but they dictate the style of the room.

You feel forced into plain or mutted floral shower curtain and blinds that go tiles.

I want boats, dolphins, tropical fish, colour and fun and it looks daft with those sodding tiles.
