Why are almost all new kitchens grey?

Just wondering - in our most recent search we viewed about 50 properties, about half of which were recently renovated, all with new kitchens, all of which were grey. It's attractive but not entirely my cup of tea and was just wondering why it was so popular!

Grey is a popular colour generally atm.

Grey baby room furniture is big, my SIL is having grey and pink as her wedding colour theme.

Pinkje · 20/02/2014 09:36

Inspired by 50 shades of .... Perhaps.

wonkylegs · 20/02/2014 10:06

My brand new kitchen is natural oak/stainless steel with brilliant white walls, & cream worktops and not a jot of grey.
But IKWYM there is a lot of samey stuff out there.

TiffanyAtBreakfast · 20/02/2014 10:07

I think it's just become quite fashionable as a good neutral alternative to boring magnolia.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 20/02/2014 10:40

It's the new magnolia.

MummytoMog · 20/02/2014 10:43

My new kitchen has a wall of grey high gloss cupboards. I'm not proud, I like the way grey and white high gloss work together with the wood worktops. And it was cheap as (Faktum).

I have a lot of grey in the house anyway, it works well with children, although I mostly trace it back to a copy of House Beautiful I bought in 2010, which had a lovely article on using grey in your interior design and it made a real impact. So we have grey painted floor boards, a grey sofa and chairs, grey rugs and the inside of the hearth is painted grey. It works with lots of other colours, although I particularly like it with yellow.

littlecrystal · 20/02/2014 10:44

Really? I don't think I have seen one grey kitchen during my many viewings.

littleredsquirrel · 20/02/2014 10:46

Grey is definitely the new magnolia. If you look on Houzz (interior design website and app) practically everything is grey at the moment.

MooncupGoddess · 20/02/2014 11:05

Lots of grey bathrooms too. And walls in a weird shade of grey-brown.

I found it really hard to get blue tiles and flooring for my new bathroom, everything was brown or grey!

TunipTheUnconquerable · 20/02/2014 11:10

It can look really lovely and calm and elegant.
It's just when it's everywhere and the tones aren't chosen carefully it can become incredibly grim and depressing.

noddyholder · 20/02/2014 16:08

Viewed 30 houses at least 25 had either grey kitchens or grey walls sometimes both. I am living in one of my developments atm which is all elephants breath. Its a lovely house but i am finding it grim tbh and fed up looking at it.

Weegiemum · 20/02/2014 16:10

My kitchen has blue doors and sunshine yellow walls

noddyholder · 20/02/2014 17:31

You are very on trend weegie colour is BACK

TunipTheUnconquerable · 20/02/2014 17:51

Oh good! Any particular colours, Noddy?

noddyholder · 20/02/2014 17:54

I think just colour in general. All the sludgey colours although they do look great are everywhere in very low end developments and are definitely more used than magnolia. I saw a kitchen recently which is about to be in a mag and it was oak cupboards and worktop so all one colour very plain with turquioise tiles SO nice after all the grey!

TunipTheUnconquerable · 20/02/2014 18:12

Turquoise tiles sound lovely. As does your kitchen, Weegie.

happylittlevegemites · 21/02/2014 09:27

I know!!!! We've just moved into a house with a fairly new quality kitchen. And I hate the grey! It's so dark. The carcasses are mid-grey, the wall unit doors are light grey, the cupboard doors are dark grey, the work tops are pale grey granite, the stools are grey and the blinds are grey metal (sobs).

It's so new that it's still in the catalogue, so there is no way we can justify changing it. I just keep looking at it trying to come up with ideas. When I get around to it I'll start a thread on here :)

My last kitchen was cream shaker/beech work tops/ blue tiles which is a)boring and b) infinitely nicer.

vitaminC · 21/02/2014 09:42

The kitchen in my current home is grey/white and definitely not new - I think it dates from around 1992!
We can't change it, as we're only renting, but luckily we were allowed to paint over the charming shade of bright apricot on the surrounding walls Hmm!

EarlGreyCuppa · 21/02/2014 11:10

happy that might be the kitchen I'm dreaming of! We're in the process of choosing a new kitchen and I thought I'd like some grey... Maybe I should stick with grey paintwork or carcasses rather than go the whole hog with grey doors? Cream with a grey counter?

Forago · 21/02/2014 11:55

So if I get a new kitchen this year what colour should I go for? I always thought white but not sure if they are looking dated now. I love bright colours and house is very colourful - so could hack coloured but don't want it to date as won't be replacing it for a long time.

I am very over wood as have had cheap wood kitchens in the last 3 houses I have lived in

noddyholder · 21/02/2014 11:56

I still love a white kitchen

Forago · 21/02/2014 11:58

matt white I am thinking.

noddyholder · 21/02/2014 11:59

I love that Had in my old house and it always looked good

Taffeta · 21/02/2014 13:13

We had our house done up 4 years ago and grey was hard to find then. I have some grey walls, some white, and grey carpet stairs and upstairs. But the kitchen is elm, stainless steel and white. Although you could say the stainless steel makes it look a bit grey.

I went for grey carpet upstairs as I absolutely detest beige or any shade of brown, and the other colours were impractical with a young family.

audrey01 · 21/02/2014 14:35

We recently finished our house refurbishment project and installed a new kitchen in the process. In our last house we had all cream gloss units with dark brown worktop, and while I liked it at the time, I thought I should go for something different. This time I went for a combination of Matt white units with textured Dark Brown Oak (around the built-in appliances). We also added a white Worktop surround to tie in with the rest of the units. You can check pic on my profile for the end result.
