Am I alone in thinking it's vulgar vulgar vulgar?

Maybe not alone, I am sure someone will agree, but I use the ipad or my laptop instead of a TV in the kitchen. I like to play songs on youtube while I am cooking.

Wuxiapian · 27/01/2014 17:27

I spend a lot of time in our kitchen/diner and see no harm or vulgarity in having a tv in there.

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 27/01/2014 17:29

When we were looking at houses I was really surprised by the number of houses with a tv in literally every room. These weren't, on the whole, houses with teenagers, but young families.

LibraryBook · 27/01/2014 17:29

I like music too, and it's perfectly possible to eat and chat over music. But the TV imposes itself on a room, so the room falls silent.

We're house hunting at the moment and I really dislike houses with TVs in the kitchen. It puts me off, even though it would be very simple to take the thing out. Grin

It's not the sort of lifestyle I want to buy. [understatement]. Screens are gradually eroding family life.

It's noticeable that most houses that have TVs in the kitchen also have TVs in the kids' bedrooms which is ewww but not as vulgar as having a TV in your kitchen.

None of my friends have TVs in their kitchens. I was just wondering how common it was.

Not to my taste but not vulgar either. I can see that if you're doing a lot of cooking you might get bored.

TheZeeTeam · 27/01/2014 17:49

Calm down, Hyacinth. Vulgar?! Get over yourselves and your big judgey pants.

impty · 27/01/2014 17:49

You listen to radio 4 in the kitchen. You don't need a tv for that.

bakingaddict · 27/01/2014 17:51

Surely what is vulgar is passing comment on other people's lifestyle choice over something as trivial as a TV in the kitchen. Fine if you don't personally like it but is there any need to suggest some-one is common or a chav by having one

Sixtiesqueen · 27/01/2014 17:53

This is hilarious!

I have a huge kitchen diner/sitting room. We have a small wall mounted TV which is usually tuned to BBC news.

I listen to it while I'm cooking.

The only other TV is in the sitting room. I'm completely against TV in bedrooms or the playroom. If you met me you might be surprised how startlingly unvulgar I am.

PrimalLass · 27/01/2014 17:59

I think if anyone would discount an £x-hundred thousand house because of someone else's TV in the kitchen, then they are not a serious buyer and should not waste the seller's time.

That's just a ridiculous reason, and says far more about you than it does about the poor folk who just want to watch Homes Under the Hammer the news with their breakfast.

noddyholder · 27/01/2014 18:03

I always stick them in developments 99% yummy mummies buy my places and they all love it!

FuckyNell · 27/01/2014 18:03

Is this a joke?

FuckyNell · 27/01/2014 18:04

I mean, I've got sky in my kitchen. I must be fucking disgusting

MadBusLady · 27/01/2014 18:07

Screens are gradually eroding family life.

Oh please. You're writing on the fucking internet.

Floggingmolly · 27/01/2014 18:07

A Tv in the kitchen would put you off buying a house??? You do realise they're not actual part of the house's structure; you can move them elsewhere?
And the sellers wouldn't even leave the bleeding thing behind anyway...
You are seriously weird.

JRmumma · 27/01/2014 18:08

Not vulgar, how ridiculous!

I don't have a tv in the kitchen and quite like the radio on when I'm in there, but in my next house id quite like a kitchen/family room type space and id definitely have a tv in there.

I do hate tv at meal times though and like to have family dinner time with lots of talking. You are right that tv's are not conducive to this but you don't have to turn the tv on you know!

NeatFreak · 27/01/2014 18:08

Hmmm I don't think I'm vulgar.

However, I do have a very big dining kitchen with a sofa at one end where there is a tv. The dc often sit there while I'm cooking and watch tv together (shock, often cbeebies).

Fwiw, we also have a tv in the lounge, which she and I watch after the dc have gone to bed. And none of them have TVs in their bedrooms as we would rather watch it together. In our dining kitchen.

NeatFreak · 27/01/2014 18:09

Is it also vulgar to use the tv to listen to the radio? Or is that ok?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 27/01/2014 18:09

I think dining kitchens are vulgar. Wink

No, obviously, I don't really, but my mum totally would. She'd have a massive catsbum at anyone who ate where they could see the sink where you wash up.

I must ask her whether a nice distracting TV makes it worse or better.

LaFataTurchina · 27/01/2014 18:10

I don't mind them in kitchens - they are nice for company, especially if you are cooking something complicated or having lunch by yourself.

I really dislike them in bedrooms though.

MadBusLady · 27/01/2014 18:11

LRD her brain might explode Grin

I should be cheering this thread really. I know exactly how I'm going to do up my house so that people with zero imagination who want to "buy into a lifestyle" will pay a premium for it.

ExcuseTypos · 27/01/2014 18:11

Oh dear you sound a tad judgey.

We have a TV in the kitchen. I spend a lot of time in there and enjoy having it on. We also live rurally so can only get good radio reception through the digital TV signal- so we use it for radio too.

We don't have any Tvs in any bedrooms- never have done.

The least "common" person I know(Harrow, land owner) have a TV in their kitchen, so I imagine its a very middle class thing to disagree with.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 27/01/2014 18:14

That's quite likely, mad. Grin

I'm realizing what I really want in a kitchen is space for a great big comfy sofa so I can laze around with my recipe books and my mug of tea while I'm waiting for the roast to cook. I'm fairly safe in the knowledge I'm unlikely ever to earn enough to buy such a kitchen, but I would love to know where it ranks on the snob scale.

ItsATIARA · 27/01/2014 18:17

Why on earth would it erode family life for me to listen to Newsnight while I stack the dishwasher, wipe the surfaces and sweep the kitchen floor? Why does it erode family life if DH watches Final Score while prepping a casserole? Genuinely baffled here.
