Tell me about Stockport...

HeisenbergsHat · 26/11/2013 12:44

I feel a bit daft asking this, I grew up in Stockport! Although I'm not from there originally, and haven't lived there for a long time, so my knowledge feels rather limited. I'm looking to move back to be closer to family (in Wilmslow), my maximum budget is £200k, and I need 3 bedrooms.

I lived in Bramhall as a kid and it looks like I can't afford to go back there, the areas I can afford are places I don't really know though. And I know nothing about which areas have good schools, the DC are primary aged at the moment but I'm more concerned about secondary.

Is Edgeley ok? I've seen some nice looking houses there but it was always considered a bit rough when I was growing up, I wondered if it had improved in recent years. Or if perhaps we were just dreadful snobs... Shock Wink

My dc are teenagers now so I'm a bit out of touch with schools.
I work in Edgeley (love Castle Street for shopping) but I don't know what it is like at night time. Have a few friends live on Edgeley Road in the big Edwardian houses which is in your price range.

Have a look at Davenport, Cheadle, Heald Green.
Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme, Woodford may be more expensive.

ps love your user name

DottyDot · 26/11/2013 16:39

With that budget you could look at heaton Norris and heaton chapel? We're in heaton chapel in a 3 bed semi that's probably worth around £210k. Great primary schools (ours went to broadstone hall) and Priestnall secondary school is excellent. Really good train and bus links into Manchester and beyond!

HeisenbergsHat · 26/11/2013 17:38

Thanks for the suggestions.

I had school friends in Davenport and there are some budget-friendly houses along Bramhall Lane. Cheadle would be nice, I went to 6th form college there. I hadn't really considered Heald Green though, I'll have a look.

Heaton Chapel sounds promising Dotty, I like Heaton Moor too but that's very £££!

Yes - heaton moor sadly unaffordable for us too, but we're near enough to go to the Savoy and lovely local shops Smile

mazarineblue · 26/11/2013 22:23

Gatley? 10mins drive to Wilmslow, trains to Manchester, good schools, local shops, good coffee shop!

pigglepaggle · 26/11/2013 22:42

Heald Green - watch out for the flight path, If you're not used to the planes you'll find it noisey

HeisenbergsHat · 27/11/2013 08:09

Oh yes the planes in Heald Green, I haven't lived near an airport in years I hadn't really thought of that. Wonder if Gatley has the same problem?

OP posts:
DottyDot · 27/11/2013 08:15

Gatley's lovely but not as nice as heaton chapel we've got friends who live there and the planes are close but you don't notice them - like living near a train line - I used to live over the road from one and kind of miss it now!

Bruntwood park is near gatley and fab for kids.

Laquila · 27/11/2013 08:22

I live about 25 miles from Stockport and went there Tyne other day for some shopping - I was surprised how much nicer or was than it used to be! I'd second the Heatons - also, have you thought about Poynton or Macc?

HeisenbergsHat · 27/11/2013 09:19

I hadn't considered Poynton no, I think Macc would be too far out - I want to be reasonably close to Manchester too. I'm retraining/going back to work after 8 years as a SAHM and I think being closer to the city will give me more options. There are a few houses in Wilmslow I can just about afford (handy for my mum & childcare) but they're upside down, with bedrooms on the ground floor and I'm not sure how that would work.

Heaton Chapel/Norris are looking like good contenders at the moment. I like this one - H Chapel and Norris, and Edgeley.

I still have to get my house on the market (and officially signed over to me by STBXH), so I'm just checking out possible areas at the moment really...

This one looks good too: here

good luck and hope you find somewhere you're happy with - feel free to pm me if you want any info on heaton chapel/norris!

HeisenbergsHat · 27/11/2013 10:01

Thanks Dotty, that one is nice. Shame about the tiny third bedroom but the massive playroom would make up for that!

Wish the court would hurry things up so that I can get the house on the market. Feel like I'm in limbo at the moment.

Another vote here for Heatons - Chapel and Norris! really good schools.

DIddled · 27/11/2013 22:54

We live in Heaton Moor, but near to Norris border- some houses titled HN as as near as dammit to h moor. I have a feeling that you would not get Priestnall as an option if you cross the A6- that is a fairly recent change. Happy to give you any info required. Love it here - we are currently extending as we cannot afford a bigger house.

HeisenbergsHat · 28/11/2013 08:21

Thanks diddled, I think I need to do proper research on catchment areas and schools, I don't really have any friends left in Stockport these days - and none with secondary aged kids to ask. From what I've seen Priestnall seems to have a good reputation, as does Cheadle Hulme High, I went to Bramhall High which is still doing well. It doesn't really seem like much has changed in the past 25 few years in terms of which schools are considered good.

Good luck with the extension!

DottyDot · 28/11/2013 09:33

Hi - the border for Priestnall is currently Manchester Road. Ds1 got in without any problems this year and we live just over the other side of Stockport Road. All his friends also got in to Priestnall from all over Heaton Chapel, with just a couple not getting in who live much nearer to Reddish.

I things might get slightly more tricky over the next few years with the birth rate having gone up, but as far as I know there are no plans to change the Priestnall border (despite rumours about it every year!) so if you're in Heaton Chapel or Heaton Norris fairly near to the A6/Manchester Road you should be fine.

Bramhall is still a very good school too and Cheadle Hulme!

DIddled · 28/11/2013 21:12

The ones I know who struggled live closer to Reddish to be fair so Dotty sound right. I hear great things about Priestnall- my son goes to one of the Trafford Grammars so I don't speak from personal experience, ( that's also an option).

fusspot66 · 28/11/2013 21:22

Definitely check the catchment in h chapel. A lot of that side of the A6 is reddish vale school now.
What about Norris bank? Its a part of heaton Norris but is at the bottom.of didsbury rd bordering onto H moor and H mersey . Good schools.

clio51 · 28/11/2013 22:18

Hi

If I was to live in stockport with that amount of money if would personally choose heaton chapel area from broadstone road up to a6 area. My sister lives heaton chapel downham road all houses on that side off heaton chapel I would choose. Her children went to brownstone rd school and priestanall school.I love heaton moor but we'll pricey!! And not sure why really just holds its price. Poynton is also really nice with good schools and trains into manchester.
Just my choice if I moved and what I know from knowing stockport.

onlysettleforbutterflies · 28/11/2013 22:27

Poynton is lovely but has traffic issues, I would suggest looking at hazel grove, gatley, handforth, Cheadle. I don't know the heatons very well but they have a good reputation. Not wanting to offend anyone from edgeley as my opinion is probably out dated but it didn't used to be viewed as a naice area. Probably the same as anywhere tho, good and bad parts.

DIddled · 28/11/2013 22:28

All the roads Clio refers to are lovely. Also I went to the Ash tea rooms for the first time a couple of weeks ago- and the roads round the back of there were really nice too.

onlysettleforbutterflies · 28/11/2013 22:32

Marple is nice too and on the train line to Manchester. Diddled I love the ash tearooms, gorgeous cakes!

DIddled · 28/11/2013 22:38

It was lovely! It was a tasting evening and I hope to go back soon!!

DIddled · 28/11/2013 22:39

That bloody traffic calming thing in Poynton!!! I avoid at all costs!!
