Tell me about Stockport...

I feel a bit daft asking this, I grew up in Stockport! Although I'm not from there originally, and haven't lived there for a long time, so my knowledge feels rather limited. I'm looking to move back to be closer to family (in Wilmslow), my maximum budget is £200k, and I need 3 bedrooms.

I lived in Bramhall as a kid and it looks like I can't afford to go back there, the areas I can afford are places I don't really know though. And I know nothing about which areas have good schools, the DC are primary aged at the moment but I'm more concerned about secondary.

Is Edgeley ok? I've seen some nice looking houses there but it was always considered a bit rough when I was growing up, I wondered if it had improved in recent years. Or if perhaps we were just dreadful snobs... Shock Wink

Ugh yes - every man for themselves nowadays in Poynton, traffic-wise!

HeisenbergsHat · 29/11/2013 11:47

Thank you. I'm off to visit the family next week so I'll have a scout around while I'm there, and make sure I find the ash tearooms!

Interesting about the grammars in Trafford though, I'd assumed you had to live in Trafford go to one. I really should find out how this school thing works Blush.

Romiley and Hazel Grove is cheaper than Poynton.

hanette · 29/11/2013 20:05

Vote for Poynton from me - I grew up there many moons ago. Countryside on your doorstep, fantastic high school and always felt safe. True that traffic in park lane is bad. There are some modern houses within walkable distance from the school within your budget. Easy commute to Manchester if you need it. Similar amenities as Bramall without the price tag. Good luck!

Happy to answer any questions inc schools- you won't go far wrong with any school round here- but there have been problems with primary school allocations in recent times, I believe the Tithe barn catchment was unable to allocate to all eligible children and they were offered schools outside the Heatons- which isn't great.

KosmoKramer · 29/11/2013 22:37

I'm in Romiley. It is lovely. Outstanding primaries and up and coming high schools. Edge of countryside with breath taking views.

Another vote for HC here! DD's are at Broadstone too and we live not far from the house you first linked to. We really like it here-good local facilities and sense of community but ten mins on the train to the city centre. Also bars and restaurants in walking distance, though we don't use them that much theses days! Lots of children locally seem to go to Preistnall, and quite a lot of HC is in the catchment, but it doesn't fell like a definite. I would stick reasonably close to the A6 if you are set on Preistnall.

nomorelostweekends · 29/11/2013 23:48

Sorry, that should have said if you decided you wanted Priestnall, you clearly aren't set on anything, hence starting the thread! I'm blaming the Friday night wine...

HeisenbergsHat · 02/12/2013 18:17

I'm not set on Priestnall, but I have heard lots of good things about it since I've started asking people, and I do like the look of Heaton Chapel - it turns out my sister is looking for a house in the HC/HN area too Grin.

Think you have to score highly in the entrance exams to get a place if you don't live in Trafford. Irritates me that it is an option for those out of borough tbh as it isn't an option the later way round, if you see what I mean.

sw12londoner · 26/10/2022 13:48

Edgeley is really nice. Did you end up here in the end? The area is going through some real change right now - lots of first-time buyers moving in. The properties are still in the affordable range, with a selection of beautiful terrace houses and semi's. We love living here - there is a real community spirit and being close to some decent schools is a plus! It really is a little gem - many people think it's on the rough side of things, but it's simply not true. The only grumble we have is the parking situation - it's really annoying at times but that's a small problem to have.

ZOMBIE THREAD from 2013!

TattiePants · 26/10/2022 15:18

@sw12londoner why are you resurrecting zombie threads about Edgeley? This is the second one I’ve clicked on.

BlueberryMuffin817 · 26/10/2022 16:26

1@TattiePants I know - this is the third one I've seen! We are actually considering moving to the area so I was curious when I saw all the posts suddenly pop up. Sounds like an estate agent trying to talk up the local market or possibly the poster has a house they're trying to sell....

TattiePants · 26/10/2022 16:59

@BlueberryMuffin817 I did wonder if they’re a local estate agent. FYI Edgeley is nice from what I remember. I used to live in a Heaton Mersey so would highly recommend most of the Heatons although I was visiting there last week and the prices have majorly increased.

sw12londoner · 30/11/2022 16:25

Edgeley is a wonderful area - and still affordable. Seems to be the place to buy right now in Stockport. Mainly due to the affordability of the housing but it's going to be really close to all the development near the Mersey. We moved here from Ancoats and love it. It's super quiet, has a really friendly feel but so close to transport into the city.

TattiePants · 30/11/2022 21:29

@BlueberryMuffin817 they’re back to bumping multiple threads extolling the virtues of Edgeley! I think you’re right, they must be a local estate agent.
