Showers in bath?

We've got a small bathroom - not enough room for bath and shower. I've always thought that showers in baths were a bit bleugh but we don't seem to have any other options.

We need to keep the bath - don't we??

If you will be selling on, whatever you do keep the bath!!!!! We've automatically dismissed several houses which had a double shower but no bath. Shower + small baby just doesn't work.

I have a shower in the bath. It's not really any different to having a shower in a cubicle. Only difference is you have to step in/out if the bath rather than just walking into a cubicle

I miss my shower in the bath, especially for cleaning the bath! What my friends did as a solution to this, was to have a corner bath and walk in shower. What that be possible?

We've always had a shower over the bath - only thing I wouldn't do again is have a shower screen, it was impossible to keep nice. Back to shower curtains, which can be bleached and machine washed for me!

I would never buy a house which just had a shower. In fact we've squeezed a bath into our en suite, just because the estate agent told us that it would harm our resale value if we just had a shower in the en suite.

So the consensus is keep the bath. Sorry Collete, maybe bleugh isn't the correct word. I've just never lived in a house with a shower in the bath and it's always looked like a make-do for me (and I'd probably rather just have a shower).

If you've got a small bathroom, it's the best solution. I found keeping the screen clean easy enough if you spray it after every use with that shower spray stuff.

I hate using shower curtains after someone else (cold, wet, clingy!). We brought a non-clean glass shower screen from e-bay and although we sqweege it after each shower thats all and 12 months on, its great.

we did a corner bath, tiled all of the walls and had no screen or curtain - worked for years
but YY to not have a curtain, have a folding shower screen and get a nice integrated tap and a sliding wall rail and then it works really well.

Kids having showers in the bath with the plug in and then playing in the deepening water is really fun.

PS - get a squeegee - wipe all tiles and glass after the shower or bath and they do not chalk up :-)

Although I'm not a fan of shower baths (you are trying to convert me) I actually do like the look of shower curtains rather than screens. What's not to like about them? Beautiful designs, chuck in washing machine and also change the look of your room by getting a new one.

What am I missing this time?

Grin. We stayed in a Premier Inn for a night in the summer and the kids were SUPER impressed. Ds1 (7) said, "WOW, this bathroom is SOOOO posh, it even has a shower in the bath AND a shower CURTAIN." (as opposed to our lovely walk-in shower at home!)

I hate my bath with shower over it but its the only option in our bathroom if we wanted both. Like someone said upthread, its better for resale if you have it because even if you think a potential buyer could just change it if they want, if its a v small room like ours, viewers might not think there is space (we had to fit a short bath instead of a regular one as room is so tiny!)

Shower curtains are grim. They stick to you!

We've got a shower bath which is nice as enough space to stand and shower. I find separate showers in a bathroom strange if you have a bath!

If you don't want a bath, don't have one. It's your house. Do what's right for you. Not for some unforeseen potential future buyers 20 years down the line (by which time you might have changed your bathroom again anyway). Unless you are planning on selling in the next few years, of course. I would get rid of my bath in favour of a freestanding shower in a heartbeat if we didn't have a baby.

My shower curtains from Ikea never clung to me. If you get one with a weighted edge it's fine.

And yes, I squeegee the shower screen after every shower. Unfortunately my husband does not. And there's that horrid discolouration of the rubber seal bit at the bottom. I've soaked the damn thing in bleach SO many times.

I don't understand why they would cling to you if you have a big enough space - this is confusing me.

Those silly circular shower rails in the middle of grand baths you see for sale must be absolutely useless - and YES, they would stick to you.

All that creatureretorts said... That goes for me too. Purpose-built showers baths are flat in the right place, and with plenty of room.

Shower curtains terrible, because the hot air in the shower "chimneys" out the top, sucking the bloody curtain in so it sticks to my big bum. Grrr!

I'd tend to agree that if you don't want a bath, and you aren't about to sell, ditch the bath and have a big shower instead. It'd drive me nuts to not have the option for a bath, bu it is your house!

I hate shower baths with a passion and would easily swop ours for a large walk in shower. However we have a teeny bathroom and we dont want to be in our house forever.

Am currently looking at square or P shaped shower bath units like these.

With the screen. I hate curtains as they stick to you and we currently have a folding screen which is a left over from the previous owners.

The reason shower curtains cling to you is because the rail is too close. You need to fix the rail about 10 cms away from the bath (so the curtain hangs outside the bath when not being used and sort of slopes into the bottom of the bath when in use iyswim). That way, you get maximum space to shower in.

Whenever I've used a normal bath with a shower and a shower curtain it always sticks unless I stand right next to the opposite edge! Our glass shower screen isn't foldable (it has a hinge and you close it when you had a bath). The bottom bit slides off easily so easy to clean.

We stayed in a Premier In when we were last back in the UK and the shower rail was curved outwards, so giving you that extra bit of room to move in the bath like this . It was sat a little forward of the bath as well and had a weighted shower curtain that came down a fair bit inside the bath.
