New house has a really naff name to disguise the fact that it is no. 13. New name or just use the number?

So, we just bought a house and it has an awful name. Being a bit dim it never occured to me that the house had a name as the previous owners didn't want to use the number, 13. A lot of houses on the road have names but I've always regarded it as being a bit pretentious. It's on a suburban road rather than a country lane.

Would living in number 13 bother you?

Nope. 666 might but 13 is fine.

specialsubject · 24/06/2013 14:06

no. Primitive superstition is daft.

contact the post office to register the change - and check there is no-one in the area with too similar an address, perhaps there was another reason for using a name!

littlecrystal · 24/06/2013 14:15

No. 13 would not bother me but if I had a nice name in mind, I would probably change to another name.

chartreuse · 24/06/2013 14:20

Good to know the number wouldn't be an issue. It certainly doesn't bother me.

Littlecrystal any suggestions for a good name? I would have no problems naming another baby, or a pet, but a house has me a bit flummoxed!

House names are always naff, unless they really are a cottage covered in wisteria. Revert to the number

Otherworld · 24/06/2013 14:24

How about DunRoamin'?

Or Bumblebee Cottage?

Or Manor?

FunnysInLaJardin · 24/06/2013 14:28

I wouldn't want to live at no 13 tbh but then I am quite suspicious. Most of the houses round here have names as we are very rural and numbering wouldn't make sense. I think it depends what sort of house it is. If it is a cottage then Something Cottage would be fine. I think you need to look at the houses characteristics and take your lead from that.

MisForMumNotMaid · 24/06/2013 14:30

No houses have numbers any where near me. They all have descriptive names. I like house names in rural communities but understand that numbers are far more practical in a built up area.

If you've got 50 houses on a street it would be a pain to find the one you wanted if they were all named.

You could always be 'tredecim' (Latin, I think for thirteen)

Fenton · 24/06/2013 14:32

Rename it 'Triskaidekaphobia'

SoupDragon · 24/06/2013 14:36

that was going to be my suggestion, Fenton. Triskaidekaphobia House. It has a certain ring to it.

chartreuse · 24/06/2013 14:46

Oh genius Grin

Triskaidekaphobia is perfect in so many ways! Dh and the ds' are rugby obsessed and Brian O'Driscoll is their hero. He plays at 13 and a few years ago the Leinster supporters club issued a BOD tshirt with 'Triskaidekaphobia' on the back. They got one each and wear them on match days.

Brilliant. I knew MN would have the answer!

I want to know the original name.

You really need a Mumsnet name. AIBU Cottage?

chartreuse · 24/06/2013 14:54

Moomin its Roselee.

At the moment it is a rather ugly suburban house in need of a serious makeover. It will be beautiful by the time I've finished with it, of course but a 'pretty' name would be ridiculous.

WillieWaggledagger · 24/06/2013 14:58

love Triskaidekaphobia - it wouldn't bother me to live in number 13 either

there are a whole series of bungalows in the village near where i grew up named after literary houses - tara, netherfield, pemberley - really naff

Karbea · 24/06/2013 15:01

I wouldn't want to live at number 13. I have seen houses use 12 1/2 which I think is quite cute.

My house has a name, and we do tend to use it, but it also has a no.

Moominsarehippos · 24/06/2013 15:12

Has to be 'cuppatea' then doesn't it. Have the other houses similar names? You could then buck the pretty flowers theme by going for 'Bogweed'.

TheRealFellatio · 24/06/2013 15:16

My son had a friend whose house name was a mixture of his parents' first names. Think Angentone, or Donnabarry or Kevntrace. I used to cringe every time I knocked at the door.

Ponders · 24/06/2013 15:26

round here new roads don't get a number 13 any more - they go straight from 11 to 15.

Triskaidekaphobia is genius but good luck with filling in online forms Grin

FunnysInLaJardin · 24/06/2013 15:47

Roselee isn't too bad, I've heard worse. Chez Nous is all the rage round here not to mention lots of Petit Nid type names

SoupDragon · 24/06/2013 15:48

Oooh! Triskaidekabodea

chartreuse · 24/06/2013 16:44

Much as I love Triskaidekaphobia, we have a lot of dyslexic family members so I think it might be a problem!

Roselee just seems like a rose covered cottage to me. Is there a house-naming book I can buy?

I love that Soup Grin

How about Triska House? Sounds a bit Cornish..........

GoldenGreen · 24/06/2013 16:50

I would love to live at a number 13 - might get fewer cold callers

IrisScentedCandle · 24/06/2013 19:13

I know somebody who was about to buy number 11 in a new development. Then the agent rang him and said that somebody wanted to buy number 13 but she was put off by it being number 13 and would he consider swapping. He said no because his gut reaction was to say no to the EA, not because he cared. The other buyer was point blank never going to buy a number 13 but she'd buy number 11 if it was free so agent rang back and eventually he got 7k off the previously agreed price, and he didn't care about the 13 thing to start with so now he says it's lucky.
