The psychology behind your front door! what colour is yours? when you buy a house do you change it?

Touch wood (all things proceeding without hitch) we will be moving in to a house with a weak white old front door. The house is a very terrace. Not new build but not period. HOuses in the row of five kept well though. 'Mine' is the least loved at the moment. It is quite shabby inside but the first thing I want to do is replace the door which looks early 80s. It's white. I'm thinking a Red door! Just because. Would a Georgian door look doh! on a house built in 1980 (circa).

I read that red door in feng shui means welcome! I also read that there's an old scottish tradition that when you have paid off your mortgage you painted your front door red. That amused me. How funny to advertise your business.

The different colours meant different things. I'm not sure what white means, but I feel the urge to get rid of it. And there are plenty of things INSIDE the house that need to be refreshed. Not sure why I am so keen to put a new front door on the house ASAP

Can you go 'too grand' with the front door sometimes? I remember my mtoher laughing at a house with stone lions on the drive wayy pillars!..

William and Kate painted their front doors black. If anybody is interested. I doubt they did it themselves though. Ulike me they won't be sanding the old door if it turns out a new one costs the earth.

Don't know about the psychology of it but I like red front doors. I think the door should suit the house - Georgian houses + black, white, light green etc.; Victorian houses + black, white, red, deep blue. Modern houses, not sure.

I think black looks posh, but it depends on the front of your house. White rather boring.

Some colours I really don't like, including yellow, wood or wood effect, grey.

AThingInYourLife · 01/06/2013 14:56

Royal blue

It was that colour when we moved in and we liked it, so it has stayed.

I don't like a white front door as a rule, I can see why you're changing it.

Christabel3 · 01/06/2013 15:38

Blue means that your home is your refuge! I like blue too. I would leave a blue front door too.

White seems to say nothing. That's why I don't like it. Say something front door !

My mind is in overdrive here, I think I will go for those french style blue house numers. So there will be a bit of blue.

these numbers, on a white terrace house, with a muted red front door hope it looks ok. You can't do much with a plain white terrace house.

My front door is purple, what does that say about me :). It was brown wood for years then I just got sick of it and painted it purple. In previous houses we have had a blue door and a red door!! We like our colours !

Christabel3 · 01/06/2013 15:45

Purple was mentioned in one of the articles I read. Goodhousekeeping, American version. I will check back and see if I can find out. Betcha anything it means that you're not afraid to be UNconventional, you're bolder than most in your choices, you do your own thing rather than the traditional thing.

Deep blue here. I didn't know it meant that the home is a refuge! :) How lovely. I moved here after leaving a controlling relationship so it literally has been a refuge for us. I've always liked the colour though.

Christabel3 · 01/06/2013 15:46

Brown sent mixed messages apparently. I do remember that. I don't like brown front doors.

Oh that's nice! I like that. Grin

Mine is light to mid blue. No idea why really, we just did it on a whim years ago, changing from wood stain.

DENMAN03 · 01/06/2013 15:55

Mine was a dull brown colour. I painted it shiny black and the rest of the house a pale grey, with white edging around the stone window edges. Its an early victorian cottage and looks fab now!

suckmabigtoe · 01/06/2013 15:59

janine butcher's is hot pink! Grin what does that say about her?

mine is boring PVC brown but it's rented so cant change. but i actually rather like it. very easy to maintain Wink

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 01/06/2013 16:01

Mine's white.

I like it because it looks bright and clean.

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 01/06/2013 16:04

front door test

here too

80sMum · 01/06/2013 16:06

Mine's black. Couldn't decide on a colour that would look right, so thought black would be safest option.

CreatureRetorts · 01/06/2013 16:10

It's white because that's the colour when we moved in. We want to change it but not sure to what.

GibberTheMonkey · 01/06/2013 16:19

I've just had to send ds to look.
We're in rented
Apparently it's white

I would love a rich dark green or a purple.

MisForMumNotMaid · 01/06/2013 16:32

My house is yellow with fancy shell printed plaster (its old) so the wooden windows and door are a sort of winter white.

My new house ( we're moving to in a month or so) is a 1980's box. The front door was brown and cracked but had a nice glass panel in. I've sanded, filled and stained it jasmine white. The front of the house looks much brighter and cleaner. I really like green but I think its better suited to period properties. Most of my new neighbours have white UPVC.

guineapiglet · 01/06/2013 16:52

We have just moved into a house with a white painted door with two tiny windows - it is a North facing door, and I planned to replace it with a lovely bright red welcoming door, ( I love all things red) with bigger windows so the light gets in the rather dark hall. White front doors also seem to attract all the mud and dirt from garden but am not sure how exactly.......

Have just been told by neighbour that any new door needs to be consistent in design wiith all the other houses in the close, it is a 'rule' of the management company so I am mighty fed up about that and may pretend I didn't understand what she meant....

PS loved the front door test!

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/06/2013 16:57

I had a very bohemian patients whose front door was a candy pink. It looked brilliant.

I like black best.

TheHerringScreams · 01/06/2013 17:02

My house has a pretty yellow door. I like it, it's a happy colour. We are moving to a house in another country in a few months, for a job, and the house door will be a reddish brown colour. It's a nice colour, it makes the house look more welcoming if you see what I mean.

I've just painted mine a light olive green. I love it and it suits the house.
