Name for a Barn

Not sure if this is the right section to ask but here goes.

We are in the process of buying a converted barn in Devon, it is within a small complex of 3 others. We are considering naming it:

Honeybun
Honey Barn
Little Barn

What do you think?

When house hunting I came across a Cobweb cottage which I really liked as a name.

typicalvirgo · 06/11/2012 10:19

Ooh I have just looked on wikii and they call it a gin gang but up in northumberland we call them a gin gan.Its a sort of a ccircular structure that horses would have walked around on like on a treadmill to keep machinerery such as grinding stones moving.

Owllady is right though... we country folk are like elephants and remember everything and would love to point out any inaccuracies for years and years to come Grin

NellyJob · 06/11/2012 10:22

yesterday I went to see a place called 'crumble cottage' - would that put anyone off?

OwlLady · 06/11/2012 10:26

and we would all tut and say 'that woman from town has called the Miller's stable a barn, it's not even a barn, it's a stables' and then for the next couple of months we would make excuses to pop round to remind you thi, we will post church leaflets even though we don't attend church and we will offer you game and logs and tell you about our cousin who lived in the stable for a short period in 1973, his name was Goeff but he was convinced he had become malory

don't worry we are fine really once you get used to us...and I was from town anyway

OwlLady · 06/11/2012 10:27

sorry i can spell Geoff, I am having problems with my oil and my fingers are cold Wink

SoupDragon · 06/11/2012 10:31

The Manger. Then when your family are visiting they can sing "Away in The manger" to tell people where they're going :o

SoupDragon · 06/11/2012 10:32

Orse House

SconeInSixtySeconds · 06/11/2012 10:36

I love Soup's ideas!

How about a bit of alliteration?

Strawberry Stable?

Giddygrandma · 06/11/2012 10:39

I love The Manger! I love lots of the names, I think we'll have a vote sometime but let's carry on.

How do I find out about origins of buildings please?

Cob(b) Cottage (horsey and mud houses from Devon no ? ). Sorry I know you are not really horsey but I cant bring myself to not name after a horse yet Grin

I love the manger and Orse House Grin

SoupDragon · 06/11/2012 10:47

People may not catch on to Orse House, thinking it is something meaningful. When they ask, you can put on a bad cockney accent and say "Naaaa... it's cos it's a stable innit. An 'orse 'ouse."

CalamityKate · 06/11/2012 10:48

Barnstable?

Merrylegs · 06/11/2012 10:52

Barn Cottage?

Don't call it Little Barn, even if it is. Because when you come to sell, it may affect your asking price. ie 'They're asking how much?! But it's only a Little Barn...'

I live in a Barn that is a particular colour. So it is called The (colour) Barn. Not v imaginative. But it is what it is.

frostyfingers · 06/11/2012 10:56

You could also see if there's an old map around which has field names on and see if there are any there that you like. Actually just ask the nearest old codger farmer and he'll tell you them! Some of them are quite good.

fishandlilacs · 06/11/2012 11:01

Drumbeldrone is the old devon word for a Bumble bee if that helps? Keeping with the Bee/honey theme

Drumbledrone Stables

fishandlilacs · 06/11/2012 11:04

Drumbledrone Cottage is better but i guess its a bit long

Furball · 06/11/2012 11:07

Ostlers Barn

an ostler was the groom/stable hand

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 06/11/2012 11:07

Hogwarts?

The Shire?

The Rabbit Hole?

Narnia?

NellyJob · 06/11/2012 11:09

please goldplatedninedorrs!! twee and derivative!

SufferingLampreys · 06/11/2012 11:09

Frosty got there first

I was going to say exactly what they said word for word. Weird

SufferingLampreys · 06/11/2012 11:10

Apart from the word codgers

The paddocks

Thistledew · 06/11/2012 11:11

If you are not keen on horsey names how about something like Catcall Barn?

Posh name for stables = Mews
Mews = sound a cat makes

geddit? Wink

amistillsexy · 06/11/2012 11:19

Dunbalin

Mukinart

Takkinup

Dungroomin

Seriously, though. Look at the deeds and read back through for the original name. Alternatively, find an old map and

out the name from that. As others have said. Anything made up will sound twee, especially giving the place an association it never had, such as calling a stable a barn and naming it 'honey' if there's no history of bee keeping.
