Bedroom: Is this gloriously decadent, or irredeemably nouveau naff?

JandLandG · 10/09/2012 22:35

Boring bland bedroom at the mo...reasonably nice, but neutrals and dull. Decent size, but not massive. Nice high ceilings and 2 nice sash windows.

So, we are planning a makeover

Any thoughts?

What do you reckon then? A French bedroom make over - nice dark walls and eventually get some appropriate armoirs etc? Or leave it reasonably tasteful but bland?

I'll leave it with you

I like the white and gold one...it so would not suit my house tho, but someday when I've got more money than sense I'm getting something like that except in four poster version.....

TodaysAGoodDay · 10/09/2012 22:40

First one is yuck.

Second one is nice but too dark.

Ditto third one (but nice floor).

JandLandG · 10/09/2012 22:42

Well, I know, two grand a pop isn't cheap, but we might hunt out a bargain similar...somehow.

Ours is an Edwardian terrace...so nothing like Versailles(!), but one room could be transformed without it looking preposterous, couldn't it?

OP posts:
ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 10/09/2012 22:43

Everything TodaysAGoodDay says is true.

Devora · 10/09/2012 22:43

I love that place featured in the Guardian. The first link isn't for me - I quite like a bit of French chambre style - but not when it merges into English country florals.

thewhistler · 10/09/2012 22:43

What is the rest of your house like? I like them, esp the French one, but if the rest of the house is interwar pebbledash semi might seem ott, iyswim. We once went round a Victorian semi where bamboo had been chopped lovingly to cover every surface that didn't have a mirror on it, and it didn't fit the house.

BonnieBumble · 10/09/2012 22:45

I think both the beds are a bit OTT, I think
you would grow bored of them quite quickly. I think you can take inspiration from them and go for something more low key. I like the hotel style luxury of the second bed but it is too dark and masculine, a lighter version of this would work.

I love the sumptuous fabrics and elegance of the living room but again it is too dark and would look quite drab. A similar look with light grey walls would look better.

JandLandG · 10/09/2012 22:45

Yuck???? Insanity, I tell you!

Mmmmm, I think dark is the way forward, you know.

Thanks for the thoughts...probably just daft plans, but got a really good feeling at the moment, so hatching plans. I read the other day that September is the thinking man's January...new startsville and positivity all round!

Like one and three. 2 is a bit themed for me it wold date v quickly. I painted the living room in our last house very dark and the rest of the house was pure white open plan and it was lovely at night.

noddyholder · 10/09/2012 22:46

Light grey is the new magnolia

JandLandG · 10/09/2012 22:52

Wow...loads of thoughts...great stuff, thanks v much!

Funnily enough, Dev, the chap ho I was speaking to in an antiques place recently was telling me that the French look wasn't quite to the English taste and had been bastardised for the British market. A bit like chicken tikka massala, if you know what I mean.

Still, I think I like that bed. A lot!

Yeah, not sure what all that darkness would be to live with, BB. I love the mustard curtains sticking out as they do though.

More bamboo required, perhaps?!

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 10/09/2012 22:55

Do you have small children? If so, I give the padded headboard on the yukky French bed six months.

JandLandG · 10/09/2012 22:57

Yep, Noddy, our sitting room is light grey...nice with a few bold colours in, but essentially light...going all dark downstairs would be a bit of a step though.

All white in the open plan kitchen/diner too. Nice contrast downstairs.

Too similar upstairs though...time for a change

OP posts:
noddyholder · 10/09/2012 23:00

It is very easy to live with. Ours was brinjal and I would definitely go dark again

JandLandG · 10/09/2012 23:00

CITGM, the only involvement that the kids will have with our posh, definitely non-yukky bed(!), will be to bring me up the papers and breakfast in bed on a Saturday morning Smile

OP posts:
JandLandG · 10/09/2012 23:06

Wierd.

Our end wall between kitchen and diner is brinjal, (I think).

We had a whole feature wall of it in our previous place. Bit of aubergine and olive on our Wm Morris grown-up curtains in sitting room...you can't beat dark purple.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 10/09/2012 23:07

It's exactly that combo of children, padded headboard and marmalade that worries me, JandLandG!

I am a great fan of the French brocante decorating style, but I don't like the headboard and don't like the cabriole legs (let alone the stumpy little prop/leg in the centre of the bed, which only really leaves the mattress and base. Blush

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 10/09/2012 23:08

William Morris curtains? Now you're talking.

JandLandG · 10/09/2012 23:33

Yeah, I suspect coco pops don't go too well with silky headboards either.

I'm looking at the curtains right now...those were the days! Three years ago when we had a few quid!

Depends what type of house you have

AllPastYears · 11/09/2012 08:52

2nd the best, then 3rd, 1st not to my taste. But then I like dark, rich, sumptuous rooms, especially for bedrooms. Easier to sleep in a dark, cosy room.

biddyofsuburbia · 11/09/2012 09:07

Love the 'french' look, and also the darker colours although I probably wouldn't be so daring Smile (My house is currently mainly white with various shades of grey and mushroom upstairs!) Would not have the bed in gold though, just getting into gold plated taps territory for me, but then I am not a style-guru! Sweetpea and willow do lots of french style stuff..here

NCForNow · 11/09/2012 09:09

I like the decadent gold bed but the other two rooms look VERY masculine. like somewhere a man like Big from SATC would live!

Debs75 · 11/09/2012 09:18

The 2nd is lovely but makes the room appear smaller, you might get away with it if trhe ceilings are high. the living room is fab. the first one is a bit too whimsy for me but ok

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 11/09/2012 09:20

The third is more to my taste however I wouldn't go as far as they have with the look. French Chic in the first link is all well and good (imo) in a hotel, but my goodness the level of tidiness required would be enough to put me off. At least with the bottom link a little bit of clutter just blends in well.

If I could do my bedroom over (which I wouldn't as it took ages to get the right colour up in the first place), id go for grey and yellow, something like <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=grey+yellow+bedroom&start=337&hl=en&sa=X&rlz=1T4ACAW_en___GB393&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=d0-wyOX8HDE_SM:&imgrefurl=pinterest.com/petit_elefant/bedroom/&docid=QvZq72eC16yZNM&imgurl=media-cache-ec4.pinterest.com/upload/93590498475809502_S53rUibD_b.jpg&w=192&h=256&ei=IPROUI2rNoOx0QWO9IGgAQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=279&vpy=214&dur=1312&hovh=204&hovw=153&tx=78&ty=120&sig=112830853823333652205&page=13&tbnh=144&tbnw=108&ndsp=30&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:337,i:187&biw=1366&bih=618" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this
