Bedroom: Is this gloriously decadent, or irredeemably nouveau naff?

Boring bland bedroom at the mo...reasonably nice, but neutrals and dull. Decent size, but not massive. Nice high ceilings and 2 nice sash windows.

So, we are planning a makeover

Any thoughts?

What do you reckon then? A French bedroom make over - nice dark walls and eventually get some appropriate armoirs etc? Or leave it reasonably tasteful but bland?

I'll leave it with you

Number one - the airy feel is more me though I'm not a fan of gilt & I'd have to have curtains that let less light in.

Number two - I like the boutique hotel feeling for a bedroom but that is oppresively dark imo.

Number three(living room) - is ok, has some nice pieces, needs a rug. Bedroom - not keen (then again, I am someone who likes a cohesive look that others may find a bit too contrived).

What's the natural light like? What direction does it face?

I love the idea of dark colours in a bedroom, and would definitely use the colours in the sitting room in the Guardian link (dark teal blue, near-black, gold, rich mustardy yellow) as the basis for a bedroom scheme. Bedrooms don't need space and light maximising, they are supposed to be a restful place for going to sleep. I can see the twirly gold bed in pic 1 fitting in with that, if that's your thing (I couldn't be sure I wouldn't go off it, it is very statement).

Despite all this, I don't like pic 2. Looks like a very posh Premier Inn, and has that particular warmth to the brown that says more "poo" than "bitter chocolate/mink" to me. Grin

Also (general question) don't padded headboards with fixed covers get a bit, you know, manky?

Devora · 11/09/2012 12:04

There goes noddy, breaking my heart again. I LOVE light grey and feel very distressed at its impending naffness.

I like the idea of a dark bedroom, too. But not with the rest all matchy-matchy and hotel suitey. Keep the rest pared down, no fuss and no florals.

The dining room in this house which I am lusting over a little bit has a gorgeous colour scheme that I think might also work for a bedroom?

MoreBeta · 12/09/2012 21:46

Both those bedrooms in the OP post are too much for me. Minimalist is the way to go. I want cool and calm and no fuss and clutter when I go to bed.

Our bedroom looks like this except we have a cream rug.

Gloriously decadent, without a doubt.

My bedroom is very dark and has a padded headboard, along with crystals, faux fur and loads of cushions, it feels cosy and luxurious (although I realise not to everyone's taste)

Indeed. I can find plenty of things I like (including that house) but DH is being a pain...

JandLandG · 12/09/2012 23:23

Yeah, nice colour that in the dining room...I think I'd have mine the light grey/white colours that have been mentioned earlier though...better for donwstairs, but looks nice in that pic

Any thoughts onto what it actually is?

This maybe?

Do you know what colour I really like? The sort of vibrant peacock blue you see on peacock's necks. Bright, but not too light. A sort of dark blue that shines. Is there such a thing outside of silk/velour?

So I'm looking for a flat matt shiny bright medium blue. Confused

I think dark is quite nice in a bedroom. Especially as I get a bit older....

But maybe too cocoon like for waking up in the morning! Also I can imagine it would not be great for getting dressed as you won't be able to see properly.
