Is Travertine marble the new avocado suite?

I have picked out travertine marble tiles for the floor and bath panel of our family bathroom. Tiler came to do a cost estimate for the job y'day and said "everyone is getting those, they will date your house dreadfully in a few years' time".
I am thinking, shit - is travertine the next avocado suite?

Thoughts? And any alternative suggestions...we have a blank slate.

chances my builder wants us to use slate so that the b/r is all black and white, which you might like- I've poohpoohed it, tho, as think it will look too gloomy/bachelorpaddy

MrsCampbellBlack · 05/05/2012 13:10

Well obviously I wouldn't pay fired earth prices - I mean does anyone? But do like the limestone look and if only on floor and not all over walls too - I think its pretty nice.

Spring - I'm not a fan of slate either. Perhaps I should just keep the fetching lino we have at the moment Wink

justasecond · 05/05/2012 15:45

I agree with MrsCampbellBlack it looks nice on just the floor but not floor and walls. I did my bathroom walls and floor in travetine in my last house back in 2005. I think that look is quite dated now but not offensive. I am just doing our main bath at the mo in ultra modern very large polished tiles (wall and floor) from porcelanosa. They look lush but perhaps a bit too modern for some.

noddyholder · 05/05/2012 18:20

Yes definitely.

SpringHeeledJack · 05/05/2012 21:32

oh do linky to your tiles, justa

I am now suffering Tile Anxiety

Staverton · 05/05/2012 22:14

Me too springheeled!
I don't think there are that many nice ones. I like the look of tongue and groove but would be no good behind shower

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 05/05/2012 22:34

It's difficult isn't it.

I think I'm going to go with some kind of limestone type thing on the floor and a 'natural' stone colour on the walls (tiles) halfway up and paint the top. I like white, but I'm terrified of it ending up looking like a public toilet Grin

icapturethecastle · 05/05/2012 22:37

Yes I think it is a bit dated but we just took out an avocado suite and I said we should have left it in as they will be back in fashion soon no doubt Grin. we are going for something like this

CiderwithBuda · 06/05/2012 09:42

We did three bathrooms last year and I was going around in circles at the end of the decision process!

Did en-suite in cream Porcelanosa tile and did the walk in shower in a much darker Porcelanosa tile - it's a mottled grayish/purplish/brownish colour - sounds delightful but I can't remember the name to link.

Family bathroom was DH's choice really and it's travertine which we got from Wickes. It's a very big bathroom - we combined old bathroom, separate loo, airing cupboard and space where old back stairs were - and the travertine does look good.

Downstairs cloakroom/shower room - I picked out some lovely tiles from Topps Tiles but the guy advised against the as they were having quality issues so delivery was sporadic. So in a rush I settled on plain white tiles half way up the wall and a border from B&Q which is made up of small rectangualr glass tiles in turquoises and greens and we painted the wall above in an aqua colour. Everyone who walks in says the colours look great and I do really like it. I wanted metro tiles but DH said no way - too men's toilets look!

PigletJohn · 06/05/2012 10:36

Is this Travertine with the holes in it? I thought it was quite surpising when I first saw it, in the Art Museum in Stuttgart, but I can't see how you cope with keeping it clean or looking good if you fill the holes up with grout (or grime)

If no holes, what's so special about it?

QuintessentialShadows · 06/05/2012 10:40

Ugh, I have seen a couple of bathrooms tiled like that, and it is ugly. It looks piss stained. So worse than avocado suite. It is a dated look.

You cant go wrong with white.

insancerre · 06/05/2012 10:48

piss stained Grin yes it does
< nods excitedly>

VeronicaSpeedwell · 06/05/2012 10:54

Yes, I think so. We did our bathroom nearly two years ago now and it was already ubiquitous (plus, much more importantly, we happened not to like it).

QuintessentialShadows · 06/05/2012 10:55

We have just managed to update a tired looking bathroom from 1999 with severely dated tiles, by replacing the floor and putting in new units.

(Pics on profile)

I think I manage to complement the old tiles, we could not afford to retile so went for the cheap option of units only.

But with travesty marble, you are stuck!

QuintessentialShadows · 06/05/2012 10:56

Sorry, travertine, not travesty.

Blush Hang on.....

My builder steered me onto limestone. He argued that travertine was more filler than stone.

I like it. Nice big neutral tiles work in our tichy windowless bathroom.

LaAmanda · 06/05/2012 11:39

I actually prefer something much cheaper. Linoleum Shock. Good quality, cushion soft, warm, inexpensive and I can change it as often as I like, very easily. Travertine reminds me of too many boring hotels.

ArtVandelay · 06/05/2012 12:09

I've just got two bathrooms done in 30x60 size polished anthracite floor tiles. 30x60 glossy white wall tiles and contrast walls done in a dull slate 40x40 that looks like lots of little rectangle tiles once the grout goes on. It works lovely in both the big and small bathroom. The glossy floor gives it more light but in a dark sort of way! Also the whole house has the same floor tiles.

I tried to find some pictures of all the tiles but I cant :( I love it but it might be a bit clinical and 'American Psycho' for some but I'd have loved some MN opinions.

If I was you, I would just get what makes you happy - it looks pretty inoffensive stuff to me and I think you could dress it up with different styles quite easily. My stuff will probably look appalling in 10 years time but at least I will have had the thrill of getting what I want :)

noddyholder · 06/05/2012 12:23

Art that sounds gorgeous. I hate that romanesque tumbled look in a modern bathroom. It is not ancient rome this stuff didn't age by itself! Love the sound of yours.

MrsCampbellBlack · 06/05/2012 12:37

Anyone got any good links to lovely bathrooms that show the floor and tiles? Am after inspiration . . .

thanks

noddyholder · 06/05/2012 12:50

this is lovely elegant but not samey

noddyholder · 06/05/2012 12:55

love

MrsCampbellBlack · 06/05/2012 12:56

Oh that second one is just gorgeous!

noddyholder · 06/05/2012 13:08

I love the gold with the grey so relaxing
