Where to live, near Chiswick?

We currently live in the States but we will be moving to London with my husband's job for 4 months over the summer. He will be working in Chiswick and would like a pretty short commute so he can be home in time for tea with our little boy.
We don't know London at all and aren't going to get a chance to come over and check it out before we move (husband's company will be sorting out our accommodation for us), so I'd be really grateful for any recommendations of nice places to live near Chiswick? Luckily for us we won't be paying the rent so cost isn't an issue (within reason!)
Thanks in advance...

If money is not an object Chiswick itself is blooming lovely (I would love to live there) but it is pricey!

Otherwise, Putney, Barnes, East Sheen, Kew, Acton all close by but not as expensive and still very desirable.

If you don't want to live where hubbie works but still have a nice large budget Brook Green, Fulham, West Kensington, Barons Court and Chelsea are all very close by and are very lovely indeed and pretty much totally out of reach for normal folk so may be nice for you to live like a celeb for a few months at someone else's expense!!

will he be driving or tubing to work? that would be a big factor for me

Quite a bit of Ealing is nice too

Chiswick is a lovely place for kids to grow up.
River, shops, restaurants, playground, plenty of other kids, kew gardens, district line, rail connections

Live in Chiswick itself- nicest part of London I think.
Adding to bellas list- Chiswick house has been done up and is now great playground and cafe.
Also v nice summer playground with paddling pool in dukes meadow.

Love kew- the gardens are good for the soul - get a yearly pass. But wouldn't live In Kew/Putney/Barnes/Richmond because of airplane noise. Less noticeable in Chiswick.

\link{http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strand-on-the-Green\Strand on the Green} is divine if money's no object Smile

there's a \link{http://strandjuniors.org.uk/\junior school right there too}

That would be my old primary!

Wow, thank you very much for the speedy responses - it sounds like we've got plenty of ver nice options! All we need to do now is see quite how generous my husband's company is feeling and take it from there... I don't think it's quite a case of 'money no object' but I'm sure we'll find something.
Think he'll be tubing it to work (not sure if we'll have access to a car)
I'm so excited to have the whole summer to explore London! :)

Mine too! Chiswick is lovely grove park/strand on the green away from high rd near park and river or lots of lovely streets off high rd with all the great shops and cafes... Take your pick!

BellaBearisWideAwake · 24/04/2012 21:02

Really?! When?

Staverton · 24/04/2012 22:57

I would live in Chiswick rather than any of other options- even Chelsea if you have a family. There is so much to do and lots of green space but it still has that londony vibe.
I used to live in the streets behind strand on green off Thames road, not that pricey and good for river walks and you can walk to kew gardens. Bedford park area of Chiswick also lush- bigger houses and closer to buzz of high road.
Enjoy!

oh no, not west kensington - it's rough and surrounded by thundering motorways and horrid traffic jans on North ebd rd. Fulham is ok but no big nice park right there. Just rent in Chiswick - it's not the most expensive area so the company should afford it. Strand on the Green is too far from the tube, better to be nearer Stamford Brook tube(big green there, access to river walks not far, lots of chain shops in Hammersmith not far either), or just off Chiswick High road (lots of buses too)/Bedford Park both near Turnham Green station!

If you're going to be car-less in London with a child in the summer, I'd strongly recommend you go for somewhere with good public transport connections.

Chiswick is on the tube, but depending where you are, it can be a long walk or a niggly connection (difficult with a pushchair) to the sights and the centre of town.

For the same budget, say £3500-£4000pcm for a nice 4 bed house, I'd go for Brook Green, near Hammersmith. Your husband can still get to work easily, but you'd have the Piccadilly Line and Westfield on your doorstep. Avoid the Goldhawk Road end, which estate agents might try and persuade you is the same area - it isn't.

A word of warning - very few corporate rentals come fully furnished in the family house market. You may end up having to take an apartment rather than a house - though stretch that budget slightly and you could get somewhere pretty nice in legendary W8.

Oh yes, and don't fall victim to the Turnham Green swizz if you do go to Chiswick - it is on the Piccadilly Line, but only very early in the mornings and very late at night. Trains pass straight through at other times. Bizarre, but that's London Underground for you.

thomasbodley · 25/04/2012 10:28

Not always a short let, Smalltown, if it's a corporate rental contract.

I have a short let (though in somewhat scuzzier Shepherd's Bush) - it's rented directly by the company for a year at a time. I don't get a premium - just the security of not having to deal with voids.

If he's working in chiswick, live in chiswick! With a small child it's a no brainer.

PrincessTamTam · 25/04/2012 18:52

Bella - sorry bit late in replying had to deal with 4 yo waking up.
I was there '69 to '76 I think?? Am very old and struggling to remember.Grin

Chiswick is perfect for kids, very safe, loads to do yet still easy to get into town - district line is fine (if a little slow sometimes).
Don't go to Hammersmith, not nearly as nice.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 25/04/2012 19:39

84-90!!

marriedtoaMAMIL · 26/04/2012 14:36

Thank you so much for all the info, especially details about the Tube services that I would have had no idea about otherwise - very helpful...

xmyboys · 26/04/2012 16:27

The district line stops at turnham green all the time and it's pretty regular.
Don't stress about that.
Where in chiswick is he working?
A walk to work in summer would be perfect.
