New kitchen-will glass splash backs look dated/naff in couple of years?

Having waited ten years to renovate my kitchen have seen many fashions come and go, am planning handleless white gloss units, white Corian worktops and oak flooring, considering greeny turquoise glass splash backs but fear it wil all look horribly dated by next year.Should i go for turquoise tiles instead? I know white gloss are ubiquitous at moment too but am going for very simple design.

I think they look dated already (if you mean all round the worktops rather than just behind the cooker). I'm tired of them and I don't even have them.

Staverton · 21/04/2012 15:41

I think the gloss will date more quickly...
How about Matt handleless?

noddyholder · 21/04/2012 16:03

Yes I think gloss and glass is already dated.

ArcticRoll · 21/04/2012 16:04

Yes I'm a bit worried about the hi gloss but haven't seen any matt white ones I like yet, also agree with SwedishEdith that the glass splash back is looking dated already too, ahhhg perhaps I should go back to my original idea of Plain English/Devol style painted wood and tiles behind hob.

ah noddy you are design guru wat are your recommendations for classic design that won't look horribly dated?

Pannacotta · 21/04/2012 16:20

If you are worried about it looking dated then the PE painted look with either painted walls (no tiles) ir just tiles behind the hob is a good choice.
I have linked to this kitchen a few times but to me it looks very classic and timeless

No tiles just a steel splashback behind the hob and stone upstands.

Rindercella · 21/04/2012 16:24

I can suggest something which may be a good compromise for you - and looks bloody fantastic too. I recently tiled my kitchen with green glass mosaic tiles from Fired Earth. Looks brilliant and won't date. I have had so many comments about how good they look. I was lucky - I live down the road from their factory shop & I got them in the sale 25% off I think). Will try and link to them...am on iPad so might be tricky...

Rindercella · 21/04/2012 16:28

these ones

Originally I was just going to do above the hob but I loved them so much I had them put all around the kitchen units.

pickledsiblings · 21/04/2012 16:29

We have a PE style kitchen (made by our next door neighbour who used to work for PE) with a white corian worktop that continues down the side and an integral sink. It is 8 years old and still looks fab. Our splashback is tongue and groove wood painted in FB slipper satin and the units are painted in FB cooking apple green. Flooring is oak. Fairly classic look that won't date IMO.

annalouiseh · 21/04/2012 16:32

what type of gloss handleless are you looking at? the 'J' shape

YNK · 21/04/2012 16:40

I was going to mention SS splashbacks too. I have them and I think they are classy.

ArcticRoll · 21/04/2012 16:42

Thank you for all replies.
Thanks Pannacotta love the link, am slowly dropping my white gloss/splashback idea, think I became stuck on idea of white Corian work surfaces about four years ago and have then tried to plan kitchen around that, now realise the Corian along with my kitchen ideas are very early Noughties. I swing from having quite minimalist kitchen to more eclectic homely /home spun look.
Love the tiles Rindercella but think as am domestic slut will be nightmare to keep clean.
Love the sound of your kitchen pickled sibling-perhaps I can have white corian and painted units!

SwedishEdith · 21/04/2012 16:53

I do like those tilesRindercella

Agree that stainless steel is fairly standard (but I quite like a bit of that industrial look mixed with wood- think Jamie Oliver's latest tv kitchen).

RandomMess · 21/04/2012 16:56

YOu can just get clear glass splashbacks behind hob and sink so it just looks like your kitchen walls are painted and don't have a splashback IYSWIM?

ArcticRoll · 21/04/2012 17:01

annalouiseh -was looking at simple straight not j-shaped handleless units.

Oh FFS I've waited years to get the white gloss kitchen and glass splashback I had my heart set on, it's coming in 3 weeks and now it's dated!!??

Actually the splashback isn't actually ordered yet and the quote is rather massive so I was on the look out for cool alternatives...will keep watching this thread!

SwedishEdith · 21/04/2012 17:03

Oh, don't worry, I have white gloss so what do I know? Grin

RandomMess · 21/04/2012 17:06

I have cream gloss and omg it is a dream to clean and hide the smears etc Grin

We stiill don't have any splashbacks though Grin

I loathe tiles with a passion, hate grout hate how it gets dirty urgh, have shower board stuff in my bathroom instead of tiles I detest grout that much.

SwedishEdith · 21/04/2012 17:08

Well, we still need something behind cooker and I am now lusting over the Fired Earth link. No tiles anywhere else though, just upstands (they're probably dated as well now Grin ) and paint

4paws · 21/04/2012 17:09

I have had glass splashbacks for the last 4 years and imho, they are brilliant to clean and continue to look great. So, so much better than tiles. Currently cream units with cream splashbacks

4paws · 21/04/2012 17:11

and stainless steel is a right bugger to clean

RandomMess · 21/04/2012 17:18

That was why we didn't get stainless steel just the finger marks on the cooker hood and oven are driving me crazy...

Follyfoot · 21/04/2012 17:23

Re cleaning stainless steel - have you tried these? They're brilliant.

Love your tiles Rinders

RandomMess · 21/04/2012 17:27

What is the diff between the stainless steel e-cloth and a normal one Confused I've got glass ones and a heavy duty type one neither of which seem to get rid of the grease marks on stainless steel.

Follyfoot · 21/04/2012 17:48

Its more textured on one side than a normal e cloth, and the other side polishes smears etc out
