i need some inspiration. we have an oatmeal-coloured carpet, and a black iron bedstead, both of which are staying put. everything else is up for grabs.

toying with this paper for a feature wall....

That paper is utterly stunning. I've done a whole room in the lilac colourway for a client and it's completely beautiful. You need to do the whole room, it's so delicate that one wall will look too wimpy. I promise it will look fantastic!

Devora · 16/04/2012 00:16

That paper is beautiful. It's very like an original 18th century one in Strawberry Hill House (neo-Gothic mansion built by Horace Walpole).

I don't have any feature walls, but I do have an oatmeal coloured carpet in our bedroom. Our bedstead is pewter, quite unusual, sort of art nouveau-ish. The bedlinen is either charcoal or plum. Our walls are painted F&B Blackened (very pale bluish grey), and the curtains are floor-length plum-coloured (fake) silk. We have a big charcoal-coloured trunk, and an art deco wooden chest of drawers with a large silver mirror over the top. Our view is over beautiful copper beech trees, with parakeets nesting in them.

It's very soothing and restful Smile

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 16/04/2012 08:07

soothing and restful if definitely the aim
fresh, sadly we don't have the funds to do the whole room in that paper, as we need to spend most of our budget on replastering, a new chest, and new wardrobes, as our cheapo Argos ones are old and knackered.
I've not seen the paper IRL, but have ordered a swatch. we might have to look for something cheaper or bolder!

I love our bedroom - its a warm cream colour throughout (walls, fitted wardrobes same colour) with one feature wall (behind bed) in gold wall paper with cherry blossom trees on it and dark bronze material blind over window. Very restful indeed. A feature wall is a good idea but I'd ensure its complimentary to the rest of the room and colours rather than contrasting.

Kristina2 · 16/04/2012 08:56

Devora-haveyou moved house? Your bedroom sounds fab but i didnt know you had parakeets in ...ahem...your part of town???

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 16/04/2012 09:25

have just googled "blackened" and it looks a lovely colour
i want to keep things quite light, as although the room is south facing, the window is small for the size of the room, but don't want it to be too kelly hoppen bland

i wish i wasn't so rubbish at interiors.....

If you like that paper, you're not rubbish at interiors, you have exquisite taste, dahlink Grin

But, on a slightly more practical note..

Restfulness also comes from soft textures which help deaden noise. So, you could just as easily paint the walls something soothing, then have full length interlined curtains in a delicate pattern similar to that wallpaper. If those are too expensive to start with, have a roman blind made in something patterned with plain dress curtains on a pole above it. If you can, get thick linings to go behind the curtains to make them look padded and soft.

A large headboard also helps, in a soft colour. This is something which can be added later when funds allow. Buttoning on the headboard makes it look plumper.

I don't do feature walls. We have oatmeal/beige carpet in our bedroom, ivory walls, a huge seascape canvas of a beach in Antigua by me Grin on the chimney breast (no fire place) which is blues, purples, browns& sand coloured . Bed covers are pale blues & browns or White & pale gold with slightly darker blue & gold curtains. All furniture is oak& beautiful White feature light & there are gold/ brown silk cushions on the chairs. It's more subtle than it sounds, very calming and in the afternoon when the suns out it kinda glows - I love it.

Pannacotta · 16/04/2012 18:35

I would do all the walls in paper or none.
This is similar but half the price

I have a sample of this paper by my desk and its beautiful.

I agree re thick curtains which would add softness and glamour.
Make sure you are generous with fabric if you have curtains, ie plenty of fabric and full length.

Devora · 16/04/2012 22:37

Kristina, we have so many parakeets in our part of town they have to cull! Seriously, ask kew - they're all over this part of London. Very bizarre Smile

Kristina2 · 17/04/2012 07:29

Well, you learn soemthing new every day on mumsnet. Wildlife, decorating......its a mine of useful information Smile

I shall keep my eyes peeled on 24 may

BonnieBumble · 17/04/2012 07:35

I love that wallpaper too.

I know that feature walls are an MN no no but I'm going to have a feature wall in our bedroom, I've been looking at similar designs. Nobody ever comes into our room so we don't have to worry about offending the style police. Grin

dinkystinkyandveryverybored · 17/04/2012 10:16

We have parakeets in the cemetery behind us too Devora - am wondering if live near us..

Devora · 17/04/2012 18:35

SW London, dinky - loads in Teddington (there's a colony in Bushy Park) but I understand they're also around Crystal Palace and other parts of SE London.

JustHecate · 17/04/2012 18:39

I've got a green patterned carpet that my sister gave us. green, slightly clashing curtains (I think she gave those to us too!). Fitted wardrobes. Cream walls.

There's a hideous mirror on one wall, that I love because it belonged to my great grandma.

I don't bother much with the bedroom, as you can tell. Grin It's just a place to sleep. I don't spend any time in it apart from staggering in there at night and falling into bed. Not a lot of point spending time and money on it!

Plain white everywhere and decorate with art work! Looks fab

Devora · 18/04/2012 00:04

Babs, I'm mithering over paint colour for small bathroom at the moment. Can't change beige tiling yet - do you think Pavilion grey would work well against it? Does it come out as a warm grey (my hope) or will it end up feeling like a small beige box?

dinkystinkyandveryverybored · 18/04/2012 09:26

Ah Devora - am NW London - those parakeets are clearly taking over london. Maybe instead of zombie apocalyse plans we should be worrying about parakeet apocalypse plans...

kitsmummy · 18/04/2012 09:36

We have this sanderson summertime on all our bedroom walls. It was a scary move, papering the whole thing with a black background wallpaper but in reality it looks amazing! The pinks are a lot more muted than it appears on the link and I've bought old 30s style mirrors and an old plant stand as a bedside table etc, with a bag type chandelier and it looks amazing. I call it Granny Chic which I think describes it perfectly my husband is not quite so delighted though Grin.

I think papering the whole thing is a lot better than feature walls which look quite passe these days.

makinglemonade · 18/04/2012 14:19

I'm just deciding on how to decorate our quite large bedroom. I'm not opposed to feature walls (have it done in sun room and kitchen) but I'm thinking of papering all our bedroom walls in m.johnlewis.com/mt/www.johnlewis.com/231537411/Product.aspx
Our carpet is charcoal grey, would like really heavy dark teal or purple curtains.

I impulse bought bedding that I now don't think will work correct - www.bedeckhome.com/tembok-turquoise.html
I'd love some inspiration as we finished building our home 2 years ago and I've only decorated 2 rooms!

makinglemonade · 18/04/2012 14:21

Sorry links won't work from stupid phone

SundaeGirl · 18/04/2012 14:26

OP, the paper is gorgeous.

Don't do a feature wall. Instead put up a dado rail all round the room and just paper above it, with nice paint below. That way the paper looks fresher for longer as you won't be so likely to scuff it, plus it'll be cheaper.
