Toilets in family houses - weigh in on our argument!

GrendelsMum · 01/03/2012 22:06

DH and I are currently arguing about what we need in the way of toilets in our house.

We have a large 4 bedroom detached house, and we're currently re-doing the bathrooms.

Downstairs, we have one toilet. Upstairs, we have a separate toilet, an en-suite bathroom with a shower and sink and no toilet, and a family bathroom. At present, the family bathroom has a toilet, a bath and a sink.

Would you rather have
a) family bathroom without a toilet, but with a separate shower, and use the upstairs toilet along the hall
b) family bathroom with a toilet directly in the bathroom, but with a shower over the bath
c) family bathroom with a bath, a sink, and plenty of floor space

Also, is it or is it not normal for small children to put unsuitable things down the loo?

a

Normal, but ds has never done it, apart from accidental toy droppage

Yourefired · 01/03/2012 22:09

B, yes it is.

MamaMaiasaura · 01/03/2012 22:10

Family bathroom with loo here, bath and sink.

Ensuite shower, sink and loo

Downstairs cloakroom loo and sink

Will be putting 4th bedroom in loft and will have another shower, sink loo and possibly corner bath

BillyBollyBandy · 01/03/2012 22:10

a

yes

oreocrumbs · 01/03/2012 22:11

DD likes putting things in the toilet Hmm

I would also go for a) from your list.

MamaMaiasaura · 01/03/2012 22:11

Sorry

b

Yup they put stuff down sink holes too

cece · 01/03/2012 22:11

option a sounds the best.

My DC3 is always sticking stuff down the loo - stones, toys, toothbrushes, newpapers, etc etc... He oftne 'cleans' the loo too with the loo brush! At least he has stopped trying to eat the dam thing... Hmm

DC2 once removed a whole pack of wet wipes from the packet and stuffed them down the loo.

Pooka · 01/03/2012 22:11

B) Hate bathrooms without loos in.

Mine haven't. Apart from really quite astonishing quantities of loo roll.

GladysLeap · 01/03/2012 22:12

B

Rindercella · 01/03/2012 22:14

b. I wouldn't lose a toilet. Put a shower over the bath & keep the loo.

You can never have enough loos imo... I personally would get one in your en-suite too, if there's room. Smile

Yes, they do. Some are worse than others.

SwedishEdith · 01/03/2012 22:15

Will there be a small basin in the separate toilet? There rarely are but how do you wash your hands if the bathroom is occupied? And what about when you've just got into the bath and realise you need the toilet?

Mine have never really put stuff down the toilet

breatheslowly · 01/03/2012 22:17

B - a house of that size (based on modern standards) should have 3 toilets, 1 downstairs and 2 upstairs.

DD has just started putting things in the toilet. It might be my fault for encouraging her to put toilet paper in the toilet (as she has been offering to "help me" with it and I would rather not have my arse wiped by my DD until I am very elderly and not really with it).

GrendelsMum · 01/03/2012 22:17

DH and I are watching with interest...

Yes, there's a basin in the separate toilet, plus mirror and window, so its not manky in any way.

OP posts:
BarbaraWoodlouse · 01/03/2012 22:19

B. Only one toilet upstairs could be a real pain if you're used to two.

Eglu · 01/03/2012 22:20

b - I don't like bathrooms without a toilet either.

stinkymice · 01/03/2012 22:21

B if you have young kids its a must.

Jackstini · 01/03/2012 22:22

B - and yes - all manner of strange things Grin

lemniscate · 01/03/2012 22:24

We have A. It is fine except when the kids are in the bath and I need the loo. So I would go for B if I had the choice

GrendelsMum · 01/03/2012 22:25

Hmmmm - so the results are now in as

Option a) 4 votes plus me
Option b) 10 votes plus smug DH

Now for the twist in the tail...

The loo in the bathroom is a macerating toilet (i.e. only really suitable for urine and loo paper).

Would this alter your vote?

OP posts:

B definitely. Family bathroom is for kids (who mostly have baths) and guests. Can't imagine a bathroom without a loo in it. Kids always need the loo just before or after (sometimes during) a bath.

Sorry, mine have never put inappropriate stuff in the loo - am intrigued!

Option B is the best ( IMHO )

Loo rolls ( whole ) put down loo . ( satsumas in the video was even more fun though )

A 4 bed house needs more than 2 loos , can't understand the ensuite without a loo .

ChippyMinton · 01/03/2012 22:32

Option B

And no, not normal, although I may have been lucky or unobservant.
