I'm having a problem with sinks, taps & peninsula units to some extent; can anyone help?

On my profile is the latest plan for my new kitchen; it has a sink on a peninsular unit (if that's what you call it)

Ideally I would like a double sink with taps usable form both side of the island - the cooker/fridge/table side while cooking and the otherside when DH washes up (so he can watch telly)

This is an ideal but I keep role-playing it and smashing glasses on the taps on bashing my elbow on them

Can anyone see a solution?

Think the idea of having the sink against the wall with a TV viewable from it (probably on an open shelf to the right of the sink, so it can be seen from the sink and from the table?) is the most flexible idea - you can put it on a bracket so it can be angled towards whoever's watching. Then I'd put the peninsula bit on the cooker side, as it makes a good serving point between the cooker and table, and makes it feel a bit less like a galley.

Oh I like the idea of a peninsular on the cooker side; but it might lose me the whole kitchen as a possibility; let me see what it looks like

New bots on profile

It all looks so boring & conventional Sad

Move the telly?

KatyMac · 04/02/2012 21:32

Where to?

Where he can see it doing the washing up: a wall bracket might fit - better still get a dishwasher.

Katy I think your new layout pic looks much better (not boring!) and much more workable. Clearly the only place DH could see the tv whilst washing up would be if it was directly in front of his face above the sink which would be a bit ridiculous, but honestly if he's washing up then he won't be able to watch tv at the same time anyway Confused. I know that's the deal breaker for him though but how about trying a different approach???

If the tv was above the table, on the wall, then he could watch it whilst prepping food on the peninsular? And surely he'll spend more time prepping food than he will washing up anyway, so he'll get more tv viewing that way? See, I think that is very logical, but it does sound as if logic is not your DH's strong point Grin

How come you know that about my DH; has his fame spread beyond our village? Wink

I turned the cupboard doors green to see if that made it more exciting....it didn't neither did painting the walls green Sad

ATM the telly is behind him......so I could work on the anything is better than nothing; we will see

The latest design is much better. It won't look boring when it's in. If you're going for an oak worktop that warms up the room. The IKEA green cupboards are gorgeous, I think. Why not mix with the white? Say, the wall cupboards in green and base ones in white?

KatyMac · 05/02/2012 11:17

It's in a conservatory so keeping cool is the most important

I don't like the mix of doors I'll have just one colour - probably the cheapest white one they do - it wears very well

Every kitchen plan looks boring on a computer screen because it's so flat. The important thing is that the layout works and you don't bump into things in use! Given the small distances, I still think a telly on a bracket on the wall to the right of the sink would work. And you'll add personality with artwork and accessories - I think you're right to keep the doors white and plain or it will get too busy.

KatyMac · 05/02/2012 11:45

Do you think if I moved the FF up to the other end he would be able to see the telly from the sink?

I need a shallow (less than 700 tall) wall unit which is 800 or 2 which are 400 to go above the sink; any ideas?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 05/02/2012 15:51

Does this look less boring?

Can you put filing cabinets in a kitchen

Do filing cupboard come 600 wide?

Filing cabinets, do you mean the sort with drawers or a metal office cupboard?

You can put anything you want in a kitchen, the Ikea room sets are always customised with lots of open shelves and borrowed bits. I would not have any cupboard above the sink unless some narrow six inch shelves for mugs maybe. Is your DH tall, if so then the wall cupboards will be an obstruction.

Latest plan looks loads better although table is poss a bit crowded. You could turn it a quarter and have a bench against the wall? In the final cut you could probably be very clever with small base units and customised worktops to get the space you want.

Really though if the kitchen is a "passage" don't try to introduce "traffic calming" - give yourselves room to move and pass each other.

fossil97 · 05/02/2012 20:49

Also remember Ikea units are flat pack, your fitter can reduce the depth of them in two minutes with a circular saw.

KatyMac · 05/02/2012 20:56

No - I'm the fitter

I'll pay for the plumbing, electrics & work-surfaces but everything else is my problem I hate being broke it will be the third I have fitted, Ikea are much easier than B&Q

DH doesn't want a filing cabinet in there & my table is slightly smaller than that one, I think - I'll measure it tomorrow

OP posts:
KatyMac · 05/02/2012 21:36

Maybe a narrow peninsular?

With some shelves above the table & a cupboard instead of the pigeon holes?

OP posts:
fossil97 · 05/02/2012 23:18

ah well you probably already have a circular saw then Grin I've fitted (well assembled) a couple of kitchens too!

aftereight · 06/02/2012 14:03

Hi, have you seen the new post about being intimidated by a house, with this link m.rightmove.co.uk/quickPage.html;jsessionid=978AFAFC8309DAD93899AE375DA5EF5E?page=8&cc=html5%2Fhomepage.html%3Fpid%3D36851129%26goto%3DRESALE_PROPERTY_DETAILS#gallery
Sorry if link doesn't work btw.

It has a circular, end of peninsula sink - could be what you are looking for.

KatyMac · 06/02/2012 16:43

That is amazing, but too big for my kitchen; I think DH would be relieved as I'm sure it costs a fortune
