I'm having a problem with sinks, taps & peninsula units to some extent; can anyone help?

On my profile is the latest plan for my new kitchen; it has a sink on a peninsular unit (if that's what you call it)

Ideally I would like a double sink with taps usable form both side of the island - the cooker/fridge/table side while cooking and the otherside when DH washes up (so he can watch telly)

This is an ideal but I keep role-playing it and smashing glasses on the taps on bashing my elbow on them

Can anyone see a solution?

why is the sink on the peninsular?

Never seen that before and I agree it has potential for knocking taps - where does the tap go?

There is no draining board?

What about the pipework/drains? Have you thgought about how the waste leaves the house, is it near an outside wall?

cece · 01/02/2012 22:32

My kicthen is on my profile too! LOl

KatyMac · 01/02/2012 22:35

I couldn't make the draining board bit work but we would have one on either side

It's there so DH can watch Telly while he washes up (shush I am getting a new kitchen on this premise)

The pipework leaves to the main drain about 6 inches above the skirting board on the adjacent wall.......my dad thinks (he can't remember exactly where he boxed it in, in 2001)

I think your kitchen might be a bit bigger than mine; is it Ikea? It looks very posh

I just see water sloshing everywhere with that design, tbh. And what's the gap between dishwasher and the unit on the wall next to iy? It looks a bit tight in the picture.

You can't design a whole kitchen around your dh wanting to watch telly whilst he washes up Grin

KatyMac · 01/02/2012 22:45

I can if it's the only way I get a new kitchen......

The walkway is about 95cms I think, the original idea was to have an upstand at the back of the sink......but that will mean I have to walk round to fill the kettle Hmm remember the whole 'new kitchen' idea

Little chat with DH & watching telly is really a deal breaker..........indulgent?? me?? well only if it means I don't need to wash up Grin

silly question, but why is anyone washing up if you have a dishwasher?

silverfrog · 02/02/2012 10:33

sorry - meant to add, everything goes in oour dishwasher.

I think there are 3 things in my incredibly over-gadgeted, over crowded full of junk kitchen that don't. the don't get used very often Grin

everything else takes its' chances. washing up is not my thing

BettyBathroom · 02/02/2012 11:12

Honest answer - I think the design look's awful. Your dh can't watch tv while he is washing up - he needs to look at the dishes and when he is not looking at the dishes he could just turn his head by 90 degrees. When he is drying dishes he just turns his body - it's perfectly doable.
Still not convinced - get a TV that sits underneath the wall cabinets - Magnet used to sell them.

cece · 02/02/2012 14:01

Yes good point about the dishwasher.

If you have dishwasher then no one needs to wash up!

KatyMac · 02/02/2012 21:45

DH is a SAHD, he spends lots of time meandering through the chores at a pace to suit himself and does they very well far better than I ever could

I asked for a new kitchen, different room, lots of new appliances, lots of money

He asked for a sink he can watch the telly from

I think it's fair that we both get what we want if it's in any way achievable; so I will spend a good amount of time planning and being creative to see if he can have what he wants....if he can't, well he will understand. But that decision is some weeks/months off yet Wink

& yes even if we put most things in he dishwasher he will still wash up stuff

With double door at either end of the room it a fairly challenging room any way, but I really want a new kitchen so we will see how it goes

I do think you are going to get water sloshing over the back of the sink the whole time. And reaching over to fill the kettle will be very awkward, you will end up walking round to the "right" side of the sink.

What about putting the sink against the wall under the cabinets, and having a flip down TV there? you might need to have smaller "bridge" type cabinets where the sink is.

cece · 03/02/2012 14:04

Did a kitchen desiner design this kitchen katymac?

SwedishEdith · 03/02/2012 15:53

Katy - join the Ikeafans website and ask for advice on their forum. There are people on there who are obsessed with all things IKEA and will rework your designs for you. For fun!

For what it's worth, if you are sure the sink must be sticking out into the room like that, I think you need to make the L shape the other way. So long bit of L is on wall and short bit sticks out. Short bit should be longer than you have planned it and you should lose some of the cabinets on the other side.

More like this (the squiggly bits are your floor Wink):

That would be logical minipie, but I have the big TV not the small one so it's more money

Cece Yes can't you tell?

Really a whole forum about kitchens....whoopie!! (Although I didn't get your picture sorry Blush)

I'm one of those obsessive Ikea planner people. I have put a couple of pictures on my profile, is that any help to you. I think that's what Edith is describing, although it's still a bit tight between the sink and the units across the room.

KatyMac · 03/02/2012 22:39

That's nice

What is the cupboard opposite the table?

Let me play with that - maybe tomorrow afternoon? I have a course in the am

OP posts:
KatyMac · 03/02/2012 22:53

The sink needs to be closer to the wall I think - the gap that close to the table doesn't work

But I do like that layout; although the Fridge Freezer being there blocks a built in shelving unit

Also there is a little alcove by the double doors next to the table - or at least a sticking out bit

OP posts:
KatyMac · 03/02/2012 23:02

I uploaded some floorplans to see if that helps

OP posts:
fossil97 · 04/02/2012 00:42

Ah I thought the room was bigger. Looking at the floorplan & size of room it looks like a bit of an obstacle course, sorry. I think you do need to get creative.

Since you don't have a window above the sink, a small (like computer monitor size) flatscreen TV could be mounted at eye level, no problem, and turn the sink to face the wall. Then your layout (2nd) works fine.

It could be touchscreen or works as a computer monitor too for recipes etc. Internet TV is where things are going, in fact just have a little shelf and put a tablet computer on it?

KatyMac · 04/02/2012 08:18

It's tricky isn't it as it is a thoroughfare, between the lounge (wood burner) & the garden (log store)

But the utilities need to stay either side water towards the back & cooker on he other side

Oh I don't know

OP posts:
fossil97 · 04/02/2012 10:04

Interesting site for ideas for small kitchens here I can see you might need to think very hard about your routes through and working areas and maybe use some less-usual components/appliances. e.g. the one described as "London Galley Kitchen" is a bit similar to yours.

SwedishEdith · 04/02/2012 13:39

Yes, fossil, that's kind of what I was trying to describe. But I would make the run without the sink shorter to help navigate through the space. ie one base unit width less? The planner kept crashing on me couldn't upload a design.

KatyMac · 04/02/2012 15:58

If we just have cupboards either side, it will just be a corridor won't it?

I wanted to make the space less 'passage' iyswim
