Anyone recently had a new Combi installed?

Hi all, first time on this topic but regular poster.

I'm looking to get a new Combi boiler installed, allready have one which is no longer heating the flat and after repairs were made last year to it, we were advised that parts would be scarce for this very old (defunct?) model. The current boiler, even when working and only a couple of radiators are on, will not heat the remaining rads to a sufficient level. Hot water is hit and miss, but usually OK.

I have arranged for a few different engineers to pop round to advise on prices etc, but wondered if anyone had done the same recently, and if so, would you mind advising me (even roughly) of how much it cost?

I would need new boiler (not top of the range or most powerful as 2bed flat/1 bath), one extra radiator, a system flush and, I believe, thermostatic valves on each of my existing rads (new requirement?)

If anyone could share their wisdom, Id be very happy!!

We got a combi installed last year. Vaillant Ecotec. Boiler cost approx £700. Not sure how much installation was because it was part of other building work we were having done at the time.

Recently quoted £1450 + vat (roughly £1800) for economy brand boiler incl installation + system powerflush (you have to do this to validate the guarantee - so none of the gunk in your radiators is left to damage your new boiler).
This also included new flue and connecting pipes which you may not need. I think it breaks down roughly as £400 ish for the powerflush and £5-600 ish for the boiler, flue + bits, and the rest is labour. A Worcester or Vaillant boiler would cost more.

Get separate quotes for fitting/boiler so it's easier to compare. We got vaillant for just over a grand inc fitting - didn't get thermostatic controls - that's up to you, not a requirement

Thanks, seems in line with the quotes we've had sent over to us today, though one company gave us a price and when I asked for it to be itemised looked at me Hmm he then priced:

  • Boiler Vailiant Ecotech (fitted) £1450 (!!!!) AND
  • Labour £509

He also added on £70 'contingency'?? Erm, for what, exactly? Along with other bits and bobs (expected and requested items)

Nowhere on his quote did it detail VAT

Needless to say, we will not be going with them.

Who can tell me approximately how long it takes to fit a new combi boiler?

ClaimedByMe · 15/12/2011 14:19

I got one last week, but also got new radiators, valves, pipes, pretty much new system, it took nearly 4 days and cost £3600

suzikettles · 15/12/2011 14:24

We got CH fitted a few weeks ago. It was £2400 for everything (boiler, pipework, 5 rads, wireless thermostat). We didn't have anything before so it was installation from scratch and took about 3 days.

LikeAnAdventCandleButNotQuite · 15/12/2011 15:15

Earlybird if its putting in a new one in place of an existing one, we were told it's a one-day job: new boiler, new rad, termo controls on each rad, system flush and rubbish taken away.

Obv a bit longer if going from, say, water tank/storage heaters

Thank you for advice.

I've got one that is bound to go wrong before too long as it is about 15 years old!

Do most people simply wait for them to fail, or is it sometimes wise to go ahead and do it (even though existing unit still functions)?

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 15/12/2011 20:53

Suziketles - do you know which boiler you had installed?

EB - I think the vast majority wait until it goes (or fails badly), unless they're doing building work/redecorating. It's an expense people want to put off for as long as possible really isn't it and who knows how much longer it would last?

PersonalClown · 15/12/2011 20:56

Early bird- My Housing Association have just replaced my old heating systme with a Valiant Ecotec combi.

Took a day to change valves, replace whole boiler, flush system and rip out the old hot water tank.

Eggrules · 15/12/2011 21:02

had a new Worcester combi 8, rads, shower, wireless doodah controller and water tank removal (works off mains). The old radiators were fitted by the previous owners and would not have coped with a new boiler.

I waited until the boiler completely was on it's last legs and had ££ to pay and a guy lined up. I am toasty x

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 15/12/2011 21:04

Eggy - how much did it cost? (and I guess where abouts are you?)

Eggrules · 15/12/2011 21:09

£3,800, in Midlands and would recommend fitter. It took 3 1/2 days for 3 fellas to fit. It would take them 4 - 5 for two guys. They changes every pipe too. All good.

Eggrules · 15/12/2011 21:11

oops - changes should be changed. There was miles of piping - they left hardly any mess.

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 15/12/2011 21:12

Eggy - thank you. I'm not near the EM, but it's all helping decide if I have been given a good price or not :)

Eggrules · 15/12/2011 21:46

Tis West Mids right by Staffordshire. It was a great price for the job they did. We had quotes between £2,800 and £5,400.

LikeAnAdventCandleButNotQuite · 15/12/2011 21:55

Mine's on its last legs. Had repairs done last winter and informed it would be pretty much dead by this winter. TBH, we'd battle through til Summer to save a bit more money, but am due to drop a LO tomorrow, so really need something toasty to come home to. Glad to see the quotes Ive had are not wholy unreasonable.

last legs was the same here. Away to rest up LikeAnAdventCandleButNotQuite. What a trouper worrying about a boiler. x

LikeAnAdventCandleButNotQuite · 15/12/2011 22:16

Argh, it's been keeping me awake at night. Im really not fussed about the cold, but rekon 13 degrees (bedrooms at the mo) is just a little toooo cold for LO. Think if I give the MWs puppy dog eyes and tell them the boiler's getting replaced while in Hospital they may let me stay an extra night in the (probably unbearable) warm Wink

OP posts:
Eggrules · 15/12/2011 22:20

You will be dreaming of 13 degrees in hozzy. Best of luck. BTW I (we) expect regular updates regarding your LO's arrival and how you are doing. As you were.

suzikettles · 15/12/2011 22:35

It's a Vokera Compact HE - I'd never heard of them, but going by the quotes we had it seems to be the standard "cheap" option they use round here (lots of smallish tenement flats). Was over a grand cheaper than the Bosch.

Eggrules · 15/12/2011 22:41

Our Worcester boiler was almost £1,000 (with VAT). We are planning to stay for a while though.
