Kitchen - pull out larder - will I regret not getting it?

CarGirl · 22/04/2011 10:23

We only have room for one full height unit and only 300mm wide. The internal gubbins to make it a pull out larder is £457.80. We need to cut back on the total cost of the kitchen.

Will I bitterly regret not forking out £450 to make it into a pull out larder.

We have gone through the storage space we have now and what we will have in the new kitchen as we will definitely have significantly more storage and more at a usable height I am a short arse

Opinions please.

I didn't get one for mine but mine is 500mm wide.

I now wish I had got individual internal drawers instead. Have priced them up though and they are not cheap...

BehindLockNumberNine · 22/04/2011 10:28

Don't have a pull out larder. The internal gubbins which make it a pull out larder take up a lot of space and thus reduce storage space - which imo is more important!

You could always buy some spice racks / baskets to organise your tall cupoard but personally I would not go down the pull our larder route.

cece · 22/04/2011 10:28

oh hello cargirl, didn't see if was you!

CarGirl · 22/04/2011 10:32

Hi cece. so glad you've both told me to save my £450 Smile

I too was thinking about hanging racks on the back of the door Grin

cece · 22/04/2011 10:35

You could always pop over and look at mine Wink

I do have a couple of those little internal wire rack drawers in one of my other cupboard and wish a had put a couple of them in my tall unit as well. It can be hard to get to the things at the back sometimes... but I think those larder things get too heavy as well as taking up too much space.

teta · 22/04/2011 10:36

Are you talking about buying the internal gubbins from your kitchen manufacturer?.There are other companies that make the internal workings much more cheaply than that.I personally have just fitted 3 Ikea larders so i can see exactly what i have - so wouldn't be without them.

CarGirl · 22/04/2011 10:41

I have been looking on the internet to try and find them cheaper from other suppliers - not found them yet!

Oh to have space for three larders........

I think I am getting past caring tbh!

where are you getting the kitchen from cargirl?

CarGirl · 22/04/2011 10:57

Just from Howdens, as builder I know gets great discount and I just don't have the time and energy to look at anything now we both work full time.

Getting cream gloss, some sort of mottled beige floor tiles and wood affect laminate work tops, stainless steel hob etc and with out a pull out larder I can have no handles at all Grin

not sure if you can remember that we have a classic 60's house so it goes the best tbh and the road makes the house mingingly dusty so want completely smooth to make the cleaning quicker. think our kitchen is half the size of yours if not smaller than that Envy

we've got to get it done as the shelves in the curent units have started to all collapse Shock

Something like this?

Smile
CarGirl · 22/04/2011 11:24

that looks good but the reviews are scary - it may cost an extra £300 to get the builder to fit it!

How handy are you/ your fitter?

You could fit some internal drawers in the cabinet that pull out individually. The most space efficient are Metabox sides, less than 1cm from the inner wall of the cabinet to the inside of the drawer. You need to cut your own MDF/plywood sides and backs, and attach the runners to the cupboard. I think you can get special clips to put a flush front on but we just used some offcuts of end panels to match.

Do this for the below-worktop ones, make the upper shelves a bit shallow and attach a spice rack to the inside of the door.

I will see if I can upload a pic of our version

greenlotus · 22/04/2011 18:15

ready to assemble drawer box

I have put a pic on my profile if that doesn't make sense.

Basically search 300mm drawer box or 300mm pull out on ebay.

Or wire version

All the fitter has to do is screw on a front and attach runners to the inside of the cabinet, it's probably even pre-drilled for them.

greenlotus · 22/04/2011 18:20

good grief all that and you had come to the same conclusion anyway (should have checked your last link). That sort of thing works well, anyway.

Ponks · 22/04/2011 18:43

OOh helpful, I was thinking about a 300m pullout unit but now realise would prefer the wire drawers.

CarGirl · 22/04/2011 18:46

Ponks I've been sending myself fairly crazy doing mine.

Had it all decided and then need to find a way of saving £2k on net costs Shock

Friend of friend manufactures kitchens for good quality trade. We got our kitchen from him. Was discussing kitchens with him & also the several other places I got quotes. Upshot is the pull outs are a heavy space stealing gimmick. You have to be careful how you load them (tins at the bottom etc) as they come off their rails. I went for internal drawers and open shelf space with racks. I want my kitchen to last.

Also my neighbour has Howden's kitchen pull outs. She doesn't pull them out as they are too heavy & uses them as shelf space instead.

HTH

Ponks · 22/04/2011 18:53

I'm getting excited about it as having new extension built for kitchen. Have been planning it for over a year as took time to get planning permission then find builder & wait for builder to be free etc. Know exactly pretty much what I want but as space not yet weathertight not sure of final measurements so there is still room for tweaking.
Going for Howdens gloss white, hopefully black quartz worktops, grey floor tiles. As minimal clutter free and simple as possible.

CarGirl · 22/04/2011 18:58

I wanted the bosch integral combination microwave and fan oven - absolutely lovely but nearly £1.3k plus VAT even after amazing discount Sad

I'm going to have a 3 hob stove - so 90cm wide and have it towards the wall so I have more space to dish up - small kitchen!

To save money I've cut out the out the fancy recycling bin, cut down on 3 wall units, no more pull out stuff, got rid of all but 1 plinth drawer.

It's certainly look minimalistic.

I can't have any open shelving as house is too dusty Sad

having individual pull out drawers/wire baskets in my tall larder has literally changed my life. also saved money on not forgetting stuff jammed at back of cupboard. really wasn't much more expensive than having shelves - I think they were £18 each?????

teta · 22/04/2011 21:25

Can you not source these products yourself cargirl?.I honestly don't think your builder is giving you an amazing discount. Most builders push Howdens because they make a massive cut.My builder tried to talk me into using Howdens about 20 times and is currently moaning bitterly about putting Ikea units together [trying to say they are poorer quality]when he wanted to install the flat-pack Howdens in my utility [which really do look cheap].

cece · 22/04/2011 21:27

hermione - where did you get them for that price? I have been looking and they are all over £100....

follyfoot · 22/04/2011 21:27

I've got a full height pull out larder. Sorry, but I love love love it. Its full to the brim, has never come off the rails and I never lose anything at the back of the cupboard anymore.

Ungratefulchild · 22/04/2011 21:30

I Have 2 pullout larders (1 small, 1 full height) and they are wonderful. They may store less than a cupboard would but you can see and access absolutely everything so they do actually save space.
