Friend looking for houses sent me this link:

here

(hope link works!)

Really, do they really think this is how to present a house for sale?

How about this one Shock Starts off ok, if a little unusual...

just wait for pics 7 and 10!

scurryfunge · 22/03/2011 21:33

Quirky

JustKeepSwimming · 22/03/2011 21:38

My head was hurting by photo 2!

OP posts:
BumsOnSeats · 22/03/2011 21:41

Other highlights - the tea cup stencils in pic 4 and the tartan carpet in pic 9. Idiosyncratic is how I would describe it Smile!

BumsOnSeats · 22/03/2011 21:43

Oh, and the weird triplet teddies in the leopard room, and the bars on the windows of the bathroom!

angel1976 · 22/03/2011 21:49

Both houses have had me in tears tonight. Too, too funny! Grin

lalalonglegs · 22/03/2011 21:56

Who are these people who can't see beyond the clutter? Unless a place is so crammed with stuff you can't see the walls, I've yet to meet someone who doesn't know that it will look different once the owner's stuff is removed. Yet it's endlessly parroted truism that a few china figurines and some horse brasses will trammel the sightlines when, actually, what is meant is that knick-knacks are terribly common and wouldn't it be embarrassing if someone thought that you wanted the house because of them rather than in spite of them. Your point about the borders causing damage is disingenuous, would you be posting details of a house that had loads of beautifully framed mid-century photography on the walls and saying: "I bet it'll be a bugger to fill in the holes left by the picture hooks once that lot comes down"?

Your points are entirely about taste and lifestyle.

BumsOnSeats · 22/03/2011 22:11

LLL - you are taking this all very seriously. The OP was making a valid point about making a house look its best for a viewing. Having so much clutter you can't see the dimensions of the rooms is a problem.
As for the house I linked to - the carpets, bathroom etc are all things that won't go with the vendors when they leave. It is not a case of just a few knicknacks getting in the way.
Yes, we judge. Have a giggle. It is hardly a crime. The people selling these houses obviously are not ashamed of their taste - nor should they be. But that doesn't mean we can't have a giggle either. I am sure the vendors of those houses would judge my taste too Smile.
So, go on LLL - which one was yours Grin

scurryfunge · 22/03/2011 22:12

Of course people can see beyond the clutter.

When I am buying a house I tend to look at hundreds before choosing to view a few dozen. I really cannot be bothered to look beyond poorly presented stuff. It says to me, "I can't be arsed" and therefore I wonder what else they cannot be arsed about.

Everything moveable is irrelevant but if someone had mucked about with walls, floors and ceilings then that is a turn off for a buyer.

crazycarol · 22/03/2011 22:14

I thought I had clutter, well I have now realised I am a minimalist! I am with bibbitybobbityhat with the pink washing up bowls, I want one!

fairtradefloozy · 22/03/2011 22:18

oh my sweet lord, pass the bleach - my eyes actually hurt after seeing that last house. Oh gosh. Pass me the pebble coloured throw so I can stare at it ....

nickschick · 22/03/2011 22:19

On pic no 7 in the ops post on the bed is a copy of country living Grin.

bibbitybobbityhat · 22/03/2011 22:28

I'd much rather look round that house than the 99,000th neutral walls, neutral carpet, brown leather sofas, laminate in the kitchen/diner, floral wallpapered accent wall with framed Ikea artwork and big limestone tiled bathroom kind of house, tbh. At least it is a little bit different and well-loved.

BumsOnSeats · 22/03/2011 22:31

Yep, BBH. Post some pics of those houses, and we can giggle about them ticking all the cliche boxes too:
Twigs in a vase? Check!
Cath Kidston oilskin on the table? Check!
Big family photo canvas on the wall? Check!

GothMummy · 23/03/2011 10:35

I honestly dont see the problem with people's stuff in houses you are viewing. I think all this "presenting a house for sale" is ridiculous. Yeah sure, you wash up and hoover before the purchasers come round, but are people really so stupid that they cant see beyond your posessions??

You are not buying their clutter - they take that with them! When we were selling our house people kept giving feedback of "too many books". WTF??! When I look at a house Im looking at the soundness of the roof, the straightness of the walls, the size of the rooms, any damp/subsidence issues, not how its decorated or what ornaments they have. The house looks loved to me!

Unwind · 23/03/2011 10:57

I love those houses, not to my taste Grin but they are homes, and no doubt suit the owners style. It looks like they have had a lot of fun decorating them, and loved living there.

I've viewed too many houses that follow all the house doctor type "rules" to the letter. I'd rather idiosyncratic to banal.

tyler80 · 23/03/2011 12:09

The truth is that people think decluttering the house will mean they can add 10k to the asking price. A bit of clutter means more realistically priced in my experience.

fancyschmancy · 23/03/2011 12:32

When we bought our house the decor/clutter etc was so bad that there was actually a chat group thread (not MN) about how awful it was (I discovered this after we'd bought it!) But we got it very cheap as a result!

spiralqueen · 23/03/2011 21:48

I see the description of the 2nd house says "This is a QUITE SUPERB four bedroom" followed lower down by a disclaimer that the owner of the property is a relative of a director of the estate agents. Grin Clearly didn't go to the director for advice on how to add value.

And what was above the tv in picture 10? Looked a bit like a snake to me Confused

nancy75 · 23/03/2011 21:52

i can beat both of those, you know you all want this bathroom

bibbitybobbityhat · 23/03/2011 21:55

" ... "

" ... "

(that's me, speechless at the bathroom!)

nancy75 · 23/03/2011 21:56

you obviously mean jealous Grin

bibbitybobbityhat · 23/03/2011 22:05

I just MADE dh come in from another room to look at the bathroom.

Thing is ... I live v near Bromley.

Wish I had the cheek to make an appointment to view ...

nancy75 · 23/03/2011 22:17

oh go on, I'll come with you!
My parents are looking for a house at the moment, I am trying to persuade my mum to book a viewing that I can tag along on - for some reson she doesn't seem to want to.

TooManyBlossoms · 23/03/2011 22:21

Doesn't everyone keep their spare bog roll in a sarcophagus???
