Did you wash it first?

Maybe a second - and even a third, coat?

SchrodingersCatFliesToOz · 21/03/2011 13:09

How many times did you paint it?
At least 2 is necessary, more if going from dark to light.
Put enough paint on the roll and don't thin the paint too much.
Some cheaper paint need more coats as well. (so not so cheap in the end)
good luck

I had to paint six times from dark bleu to white Hmm

SchrodingersCatFliesToOz · 21/03/2011 13:10

Good point butterbur. You have to wash the wall before painting.

SummerRain · 21/03/2011 13:11

2 or 3 coats, always.

Schrodingers... ouch! The next residents in this house are going to hate me, lots of dark walls here Grin

Dirtbagsmum · 21/03/2011 13:28

oh crap no i didnt wash the wall, I'm going from magnolia to a burgundy red.

I know i have to do another coat but wanted to see if any one had any tips before i did it??

so if I didnt wash the wall does that mean the second coat will be patchy too or is it something i'm doing wrong?

thanx

It'll look patchy until the second and third coats are on. You might be lucky and just need two but I wouldn't be surprised if you needed three with burgandy as it shows up every speck.

DOn't worry, once it has enough coats it'll magically look lovely and even but it does still panic me every time i paint a wall when i look at it after the first coat.

southeastastra · 21/03/2011 13:38

i never wash the wall, still looks ok Grin

SummerRain · 21/03/2011 13:46

Dirtbagsmum · 21/03/2011 13:51

ohhhh thank god for that!

Dirtbagsmum · 21/03/2011 19:43

well, i've done the second coat.... and now its just a darker shade of patchy!

where did i go wrong??!!

OP posts:
SummerRain · 21/03/2011 19:53

Sounds like you need a third. We had to do 3 in our living room... Three tiny kids, a week before christmas and a room 12 foot by 20 foot!

TheVisitor · 21/03/2011 19:58

Are you using good quality paint? It might be that you need a medium roller head, not the sponge one but the more fabric ones. Should go on better.

Dirtbagsmum · 21/03/2011 20:46

I was using a medium pile roller thing and paintbrushes for specially for emulsion. Also used durex paint so not the bottom of the range cheap stuff. I give up!!!!

noddyholder · 21/03/2011 20:47

I have never washed a wall

Dirtbagsmum · 21/03/2011 20:48

oh god that should be dulux paint!! DULUX!!!

OP posts:
JennyPiccolo · 21/03/2011 20:50

paint one roll of roller paint in a line then slightly overlap the next roll so that you always keep the outer edge wet. Does that make sense?

Niecie · 21/03/2011 20:51

Is the room too hot? Have you got the radiators on?

We had a terrible case of patchy wall when we painted in very warm weather (25C + so not tropical but hot enough) and the paint was drying almost as we put it on the wall and it didn't go on at all smoothly. We had to go for 3 coats that time when we usually do 2.

I would have washed the wall but it is too late now. The only other thing I can suggest is try a different make of roller. Some work better than others. Or try those paint pad things. Haven't tried them myself but they look interesting!

noddyholder · 21/03/2011 20:57

Sometimes you need it to fully dry overnight to see teh true finish

Dirtbagsmum · 21/03/2011 21:02

I didnt know heat affected it, tho now you've said it it sounds obvious! It was drying straight away, and i stupidly thought that was a good thing! My flat gets ridiculously warm, and i even had the window wide open, so do i keep putting more and more coats on to fix it or is there something i need to actually do first?

Thanks for every ones help and advice!!

If it has dried in patches very quickly then you might have to sand the wall before another layer goes on, otherwise it will stick to the same spots again. with your hand and sand paper should be enough over the roughest parts.
light to dark sometimes require more layers too, as every little defects will show.

sparkle12mar08 · 22/03/2011 07:45

I rather like the sound of durex paint mind...

Dirtbagsmum · 22/03/2011 08:50

well it did say on the tin it gives protection!! lol

I've given up for the time being as my son isnt at nursery today and its asking for trouble with him about!

Oh that bloody Dulux stuff! I had to paint with that the other week. Keep the room as cold as possible. The second coat goes on much better.

geordieminx · 22/03/2011 18:08

I try and go for crown paint, find it goes on better.

Just out of interest has anyone ever got away with one coat? Even with the "once" type paint that they swear only requires one coat?

Fizzylemonade · 23/03/2011 13:21

I always do 2-3 coats of paint, I went from cream (inherited with house) to a grey duck egg blue, first coat looked awful, second coat didn't look any better, very patchy. Third coat looks amazing.

I have always used crown/dulux paints and never had a problem with it being patchy after a 3rd coat. You will need the 3 coats as you are going from very light to very dark.

Although I am no property developer I have painted a hell of a lot of rooms Grin
